The mission of a school is to impart knowledge. Being able to acquire knowledge at school is a requisite for a good student. This is a common sense, but it was seriously challenged and vilified in some schools in 1964 Shanghai. Acknowledging the power of knowledge per se became a political liability.
This was how the school Party leader in DR’s high school criticized the perceived bourgeois ideological trend among the students. “Many of you are only bookworms, only interested in books written by those already dead and are content with doing this until you die.” The tone was absolutely mean.
In the school, an open debate was going on about the relations of Red and Expert. The phrase is a literal translation of a political jargon prevalent in 1950s and 1960s China. There were two basic requirements a person had to meet to become an effective contributor to the society. The first was the right political consciousness, such as being loyal to the party and socialist cause-this was called being “red.” The second requirement was the knowledge and the necessary skill needed for the job-this was called being an “expert.”
On the eve of the Cultural Revolution, this slogan of “Red and Expert” was actually criticized by the left in DR's middle school. The slogan that "knowledge is power" was attacked. This episode vividly and truthfully depicts an unforgettable history - how the left-leaning tendency goes to the extreme, and how the madness of the ultra-left does its harm. The disaster of the Cultural Revolution was no accident. What happened in DR's high school was a prelude of the Cultural Revolution in the education sector.
Look at the DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) policy that is rampant in colleges and universities in the United States today, people cannot help but notice how similar it is to the extreme left thoughts in China sixty years ago. What the wokeism in the United States promotes is actually a kind of cultural Marxism. Where will it lead the United States? Just look at the catastrophe caused by the Cultural Revolution in China back then.
