  • Johnny Winter plays a scorchin' version of Johnny B Goode at Roskilde, Denmark in 1984. Someone throws a bottle and he stops playing and walks off. Quite Right Too!

At show in Atlanta in the early 80's Johnny had just come on stage with the Firebird and stepped up to the microphone only to get beer thrown all over him. Naturally he left the stage. The perpetrator was right in front of me, I grabbed him and threw him to the ground while several others piled on. By the time security got to him he was bloody rags. One guy wearing colors of some MC club had a knife to his throat screaming about how he was going to cut the guys face off when security yanked him away and collected the bleeding jerk. The story got to Johnny and he came back saying we were his kind of people. Played a 2 hr set with 2 curtain calls. Even if he hadn't come back I would have understood. No performer deserves that, ever.

I hope the crowd found that guy and beat the livin crap out of him. I'd have stopped too. I mean c'mon, the guy is a living legend and traveled probably a long distance to get there and then while workin his butt off, kills it with some great licks, only to have basically trash thrown at him BY trash.

Legend or not - anyone who throws a bottle should be beaten with a flagpole. Don't like the band, then just go away. One person ruined it for about 50-100.000 people.

I seen Winter back in the late '80's in Santa Cruz, Ca and some drunked up A-Hole threw a bottle at him and Johnny was about to leave the stage, but the crowd around the idiot grabbed him and muscled him right on out of the venue. Jon Paris & Johnny saw that and decided to stay...but he did let us all know not to be fuckin' around or he would leave. Things settled down and we all rocked out the rest of the show. That was a close one.

Why would someone want to hurt Mr. Winter . He gave us so much beautiful guitar playing. Hope who threw the bottle heals very slowly. They should have stood him up on stage and had Johnny throw darts at him. It would serve him right !

While it is true that bottles and other objects are thrown at performers quite often, and I'm sure Johnny has dodged his share, if you watch carefully he dodges several of them during this number before the last and most obvious one. Eventually a man reaches his limit and can no longer tolerate the disrespect. Rock On Johnny Winter!!

I was at the concert.., sort of! A mate and I went on bicycle from Copenhagen (about 30 km) just to hear Johnny Winter. We didn't buy tickets to the festival, we just sat outside the fence and listened and drank a bottle of wine. So we never knew what happened until we got home and saw it on the news. This gets better, so read on ;)
A few years later, Johnny Winter opened a new venue in copenhagen, Saga, and during that concert someone again threw something up on the stage. JW just saw something flying thru the air and spontaneously stopped playing and was about to walk of the stage, when his bassplayer, Jon Paris, showed him - it was a rose. So he just said: You people amaze me, and carried on playing.
The Roskilde festival incident caused beer only to be sold in plastic cups at concerts in Denmark (not as easy to handle as bottles, but fine by me since some people are that stupid) and yet, at a later concert at Amar Bio,I think it was, another stupid, managed to throw (in a really drunk and ill-targeted manner) a plastic cup of beer at him again. Someone, I think maybe a stage hand, helped him with a towel, and luckily he carried on playing. I saw him at a few more concerts, until his last here in Denmark, when he almost couldn't play anymore. He merely did sort of a boogie woogie thing, but great to see, how the audience accepted that, and realized that this might be a farewell-concert from one of the great spirits of our time. Long live the memory and music of Johnny Winter.

I got the first LP Johnny released when he signed with Columbia records when I was 12 & most people my age couldn't wrap their little minds around his music, but I loved it first time I heard it. One of my dad's aunts turned the front room of her house in Houston into a small record shop back in the 60's. She carried a lot of stuff that was generally hard to find such as early blues recordings & Johnny would come by to see what she had from time to time even after he became more widely known & his extensive record collection was pretty well known. I'll admit, it was tough seeing him there near the end, but I admire him for soldiering on doing what he loved. There will never be another one quite like him & he made the world a little bit better place.

A band i was playing in had just started playing a dance and we were only about 2 songs into the set when some idiot walks across the front of the stage about 20 feet away from us and does like a hook shot with a bottle of beer that was about three quarters full and hit our bass player in the shoulder . We all just stopped playing immediately and our singer pointed right at the guy and says " thanks to that guy , the dance is now over . We packed up our gear and went home with no discussion with the people at the dance .

Went to a J. Winter concert in Fort Lauderdale in around 1987 at "Summers On The Beach" nightclub / bar. . Someone threw a few long stemmed roses at Johnny! He didn't stop the show (Thank God) but he said to the crowd "Don't throw stuff onto the stage. I don't care if it's joints or money or whatever, if you throw stuff on stage at us I'll kill ya!" . Then he continued the show.....

Believe it or not I was there at the concert, and everybody was really angry with the guy who did it. Until that day the mood at the Roskilde Festival had always been very relaxed, but after this incident there was a reaction from the guys in charge of the festival. Already the next day the area in front of the stage, until maybe 60 m away, was cordoned off with a metal fence and everybody who wished to get close was subject to inspection and no bottles allowed, only plastic/paper cups. And it has been like that ever since on the Roskilde Festival. That guy....... ruined it for everyone even now 35 years later. Best regards from a Dane who vividly remembers this concert, mostly for the good...

Please, just point someone out like that to the security people when someone does something ignorant like throw a bottle at a stage and let the security people handle the situation, pretty please.

I read somewhere that Johnny once knocked a fan out with his guitar. Story has it that the guy was drunk and huge, and wanted Johnny to play a song again he'd already done, "or I'll come up there and kick your ass." Johnny refused to do the song over, the guy charged, Johnny popped the strap on his guitar, grabbed it by the neck and swung for the fences---knocked dude smooth out with one good blast to the face.
Could have been worse---Axl Rose might have waded into the crowd swinging, especially back in the day.
In any case, I hope the other fans stomped a mud hole in this bottle-throwing clown and walked it dry. Throw a bottle at *JOHNNY WINTER*? Dude deserved to get stomped!

Saw Charlie Daniels in late '70s in Charlotte NC original Coliseum. We had great seats in permanent seating. Floor was standing only. About half way through concert some guy on floor and about four rows from the stage threw a flat, pint size bottle and hit CD in center of his chest. Instantly the show stops and CD points at the guy and says "that son-of-a-bitch right there...he is gone". And so he was. This was when stage security was like all of the local bar bouncers, no playing around. CDB finished a great show like nothing had happened.

Kinda off topic but I've been a Johnny Winter fan since '69. My first Winter concert was '73 Still Alive and Well tour in Chicago. Johnny Winter concerts back then through the 80's were hands down the rowdyest f---ing shows! It just brought out the worst in some people? Either they were too high, drunk, or worse on "Ludes"? It must of been the intensity of his kick ass blow the roof off performance that fueled the lightweight knuckleheads? RIP Johnny, thanks so much for blowing our $hit away!❤

Back in the 80' & 90's Livin up in Vancouver, B.C. Canada EH!! ...we used to go see the BeatFarmers band outta Sandiago Cal. ...whenever they came to town, Their they would come out in big trench coats and everyone would go wild spraying beer everywhere and at them.
The last time I saw them was at the Vancouver Commodore on Grandville...Its a big place with a very big floating dance floor that goes right up to the stage with lots of seating down the sides and the back where the bar is ...
You can order up bottles of beer or wine and walk/dance around swailin the swill and get a little out of control
...after a while, the band was rocking and the beer was flyin ...
It was a constant spray people were shaking up full bottles and soaking down the band and everyone even near the stage ...towards the end of the night full bottles of beer were wizzing by the band and they just kept a rockin ..
    didn't even miss a beet ..
It reminded of the Blues Brothers movie but without the chicken wire ...Never seen anything before or after to match that ...
The Lead Guitarist & singer, The frontman was "Country Dick Montana".
In 1995, He suffered a heart attack and died on stage playing "The Girl I Almost Married" during a Beat Farmers show at the Longhorn Saloon in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada. The band disbanded shortly thereafter.
    ...................................................................................................................................................................
++ This is Johnny's thread so I'll tell ya another story ~ (I'm 65 us old guys like to tell stories). ++
I WENT AND SEEN JOHNNY AT THE COMMODORE BALLROOM in Vancouver,
    ~ It was Both Tuesday & Wednesday nights October 14th & 15th 1980' ~ So long ago ...
Friday nite I shot 35 mm with 100 ASA and a flash I stood just left of centre stage right up to the stage ..
Johnny hated the flash and would not come near me..
Saturday nite I shot 35 mm with 400 ASA and no flash and was dead centre and bellied up to the stage.
Johnny's Mike stand was right in front of me and he would come and play right in front of me.
I wish I brought my 8 mm movie camera ...But anyway I'm sure he remembered me from the night before.
It was Awesome when Johnny came out to do his Encore, He comes right up to the mike standing like 3 feet in front of me, grabs his mike and says: "" AND NOW WE WANNA DO A LITTLE SONG""
at that moment I yelled up to him ~ "" BONY MORONIE "" ~ JOHNNY looked down at me, makes eye contact, and yells into his mike ~ ~ ""BONY MORONIE"" .And they played the hell outta that song.....
I gotta say that brief moment in time, interacting with my life long idol has stayed with me all my life.
I started going to concerts in the 60's ..I seen 3 dog night back then I could make a massive list.
Oh and all the photos I shot both nights ...I have only one single photo of Johnny with his eyes open (He played with his eyes closed almost all the time).
In that one photo he's looking up and his eyes are glowing A beautiful Albino "Guitar Slinger" Pink...
    ........ ~ ~ + OK got to end this comment It's turning into a book + ~ ~ ........

On this day in 1964 {August 22nd} "Johnny B. Goode" by Dion entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart for a four week stay, peaking at #71...
It was sandwiched between two Top 10 records by Dion; "Drip Drop" {peaked at #6 in 1963} and "Abraham, Martin, and John" {#4 in 1968}...
Of course, the original was by Chuck Berry; his version reached #8 on Billboard's Top 100 chart in 1958 and #2 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart...
In 1970 Johnny Winter took his covered version to #92 on the Top 100...

Robin Trower, this other fabulous guitarist, has only played in France ONCE in 44 years. Uh.... only ONCE in 44 years ?!? But why such an absence ? Because the 11/18/76 at the "Pavilion of Paris" in front of 10.000 people, a scumbag threw him a FULL can of beer ! In shock, Robin fell back against his Marshalls then gone backstage, his face bleeding. (That bastard had damn well aimed, because Robin got the can right in the face...) While he had barely played three quarter hours, he came back ten minutes later for a last tittle, dropped an icy "Thank you..." and left for good. My High School buddies and I, who've been waiting for this gig since months, were mad with rage as if we'd been punished for something we hadn't done ! If I've never forgotten the only time Robin Trower came to play in my country, it's not only due to the metallic bolt that I saw gushed to the right of the crowd and the way he fell back against his amps, but thanks to the too short moments of pleasure that he gave us before.... (R.I.P poor Johnny, my other favorite guitarist with Jeff beck !)

I agree no performer should have anything thrown at them onstage (especially glass bottles). It's a damn good thing Johnny was still young at the time as his vision got worse with each passing year. His vision was always bad because of being born albino. Johnny was the real deal - a true Texas Bluesman. As for the RRHOF - it's a joke! How can JW and Little Feat not be in?????

There are no excuses. Crowds should fix this shit themselves. Back in the 80's though that sorta thing used to happen at festival gigs. I remember the Reggae Band Steel Pulse getting a hail of plastic bottles at Reading 83. They lasted less than 1 song. Quite rightly walking off. A real pity as they sounded awesome. Nowadays people are better behaved but the music's shite. Nobody seems to lob bottles at Take That.........
