I've had my 3.2 now for 10 years and its been the best touring car I've ever had. Very reliable, easy to work on, quiet and scarily fast when required....
If you drive sensibly you can get 30mpg but then temptation is always there...
If you can find a good one it you would not regret it. You need to know this car and its ways and keep it well maintained or you'll regret it!

You're spot on with your observations of speed ! My experience with an XJ8 was that despite nearly 300 bhp it just didn't matter. It's the only 'fast' car I've driven that made me want to drive more slowly. It was so calm and peaceful I just didn't want to do anything that upset it in any way. A truly outstanding ride for reasons I can't really articulate. I've driven the equivalent 7 series and A8 and they're very good but just not the same. Conclusion: it must be a Jaag thing.

An old Mercedes does the same. I used to have a 560 SEL. Most powerful car I ever had, but strangely I found driving it gently to be oddly satisfying. This car changed your attitude immediately. After a busy and hectic workday, you fall into the leather seats and close the heavy door. Take a deep breath. You are surrounded by blue leather and the finest wood, and there, half a mile away, at the end of the long bonnet, shines the three pointed star. Exhale. You turn the key, but instead of a roar, all you hear is a whooooosh, like a small waterfall, which then dies down to a gentle mumble. You select drive, and the heavy colossus effortlessly sneaks away.
At this stage you, just cannot not be at ease. The world has no business bothering you any longer. All stress and anger disappear.
Stopping at crosswalks and kindly waving pedestrians across suddenly becomes very satisfying.
An old luxury car makes you a better person.

My first Jag was a used 2000 Xj8. To this day regret letting it go. It was a beautiful light dusty blue (Minstrel Blue). People always commented on the nice color. Next up was 2007 Xj8L, Dark blue a dream ride. Your description of what it feels like to be behind the wheel of the big cat is spot on.

I brought my first car in 2016 x type 2L diesel 5 speed manual. It's a blast in the back roads. The roll, pitch and dive only add to the experience. I still have it but it's slowly decaying.

Ford wasn't a dark period for Jaguar. If it wasn't for Ford Jaguar wouldn't have survived. Ford gave them better reliability better electronics and they spent less time in the garage being fixed. . Original Jaguars before Ford were a disaster and used to break down at point of delivery and consistently thereafter

The relaxation Jay mentioned when driving one of these Jags is spot on. I get the same feeling in my x-358. These cars just eat up miles and do not tire you out as the driver. I am also with Jay on not hurrying in a Jag. Seems undignifying.

Ive had my 1998 XJ3.2 since 2001. Was a daily driver for 6 years on country lanes. Now use it occasionally but as you say, for a car worth a couple of thousand it is so good. To buy anything I want as a new car is 80k plus. Why bother. As you say it is wonderfully relaxing to drive, and I find that I am way less aggressive in my driving style than when I drive a manual car. Having said that, I love an opportunity to max out the revs, the sound always makes me smile. Any journey is a nice experience, not just getting from A to B. Very little has gone wrong in the time I have owned it. The biggest cost was replacement of the first generation plastic chain tensioners with metal ones, which I did as preventative maintenance. A garage quoted more than the car is worth, so I did it myself. Learnt a lot, took a couple of days, but can stop worrying about a potential catastrophic fail now. Only 85k miles, so with luck should last a few more years. I am thinking perhaps it will be a second hand XFR next time - supercar performance for 20 to 30k. Or perhaps the new shape XJR, or even an F type R. It's got to be a V8!

I've had Jags on and off since I was seventeen back in 1981 when insurance was a lot cheaper.
I used to own a Jag breakers back in the 90s and used to drive the scrappers until their MOTs ran out (If they had one). Rot was the number one killer of old Jags back then closely followed by head gasket issues.
The X308s represented a huge leap in quality (once the nikasil liners were dispensed with), the engines are so smooth, definitely in a par with the V12s (of which I've owned many) and the build quality is good. The British Leyland era represented the real nadir for Jags, although the Series 1 is my all time favourite (in powder blue with dark blue or black leather unless it's a V12 VDP in which case anything is good).
Modern S Types rot out because some nutcase in the design department thought it would be an excellent idea to fit plastic sill covers over the metal sills thus creating a water and dirt trap that no one could see. Quite often you can put a hole in the sill by just pressing gently with your fingers, if there's a sill left to press that is.
A 1999/2000 X308 is the best bet because the nikasil liners were gone and the chain guides had been upgraded but the new tax brackets don't apply into 2001 models.

I have just purchased one of these myself, actually, at the grand old age of 20. I’m new to the motoring world, having only passed my test back in January, but I’ve had an obsession with Jaguar for a long time. I used to want my Dads X-type since he passed away and it held a lot of sentimental value, but as soon as I saw the X308, it stole my heart. Also thousands cheaper to insure myself on, bizarrely, being that it’s much bigger and more powerful. I would’ve loved to own the XJR, but a good, low-mileage example of one of those costs far too much for a minimum wage worker like me. So at the moment, I have a 3.2 Executive and I love it. It’s just a shame. At the moment, I’m in a bit of financial trouble, so I can’t afford to have any restoration/work done to it, but hopefully, once I’m in the clear, it will still be around and I swear I will spend as much as I can to restore it to tip top condition. This is a car I wouldn’t mind driving for the rest of my life, and I truly do mean that. I know my dad would love it as well. So, if anyone has a few thousand pounds to throw my way and make a young man very happy, please get in touch 😂

I remember a mate's Dad getting a brand new XJ-R when they came out in 1995. I thought it was an old man's car, until my mate's Dad lobbed us the keys and told us to be careful!! 5 minutes is all it took to change my mind.

5 minutes?!?! It must have taken about 4 minutes 50 seconds getting out onto an open piece of tarmac by the sounds of it. I'm driving an 07 XJR at the moment and the car still delights me as it has for the past 4 years since my parents gifted it to me. Lovely car.

My first car - I drove one at university. Paid about £6k for what was at the time a 7 year old car. Sadly it ended up in a hedge but I did love it. Replaced it with an XJR that I drove for years. Relative lack of depreciation meant it didn't actually cost me that much to own (except insurance which I didn't think was that crazy once I had some no claims). Drove it all over Europe, from Norway to the South of France. Wonderful.

Great car, great video. I am a member of a Jag club, we meet every 1st Saturday at the motor museum Gaydon . i own a 2000 S-type ,i bought it really cheap , it had issues which have now been corrected but still have a few things to do to get it to tip top order. I am a fan of "old school" and i really love my "S" and it has taken me a few years to own a Jag. I find it so frustrating with some of the members of our club who insist on trying to tell me that EV's are the way forward, and i should embrace change. Er...nope! there are loads of different models and ages that attend the club and it is really great to see so many old school models, and i hate the fact that Jaguar are now losing their way with takeovers, the designer of 22 years leaving, and now BMW making the electric power units. I understand it is a fiance world market and change has to happen, but i feel now that Jaguar have lost their way and the heritage and prestige of Jaguar will be lost forever.

The Sport button by the J-gate only puts the gearbox into sport mode, it doesn't do anything to the suspension. The XJR came with CATS suspension and it was monitored by the car, not switchable.

These cars kick ass. I have a US 2000 XJ8 and had a few mechanical issues, including a trans rebuild, however, the style gets more beautiful every year in comparison to the generic cars rolling alongside it in Los Angeles. It feels rock solid when you touch the steel body, close the door or roll down the road. I get constant comments on it. When I invite passengers to ride, I get the "this is the best riding car I've ever been in"...these are really special cars with an excellent ride. In the US, they are extremely expensive to repair and there are a lot of annoying issues like the bonnet cable breaking on the passenger side, the ABS sensor issues and some of the minor plastic pieces breaking on the high mount third brake light due to age/interior heat from SoCal...but it's worth it to keep them on the road. PURE CLASS! Take it from an old school Detroit punk rocker, these rides are killer!

Definitely more my heart ruling my head with this car, but everytime I get in it I feel special especially after its had a wash and wax.
I also considered changing the exhaust on mine for something with a bit more grrrrr, but one Sunday morning after a wash and wax I took it for a spin around London. Great review! You pretty much nailed it. I'm on my sixth X308 which is exactly like the car in the video, a Sport version (my first and my favourite). The only thing to mention is the "SPORT MODE", that's for the gearbox alone, the suspension is already stiffen from factory (not by the button). Fabulous car 🤩 Just paid £500 for it 🤣 in need of some TLC, which I already started to tackle 😀

On a drive up the M40 in my XJ8 a few years ago cruise control at 60mph I slowly approached another XJ just north of Oxford, over the next few miles we ended up with 5 XJ's all wafting along around 60 mph. People who drive 'real' Jaguar are never in a rush to get anywhere. They are one of the few cars that getting out at the end of the journey is almost always the worst part of the journey.

The X300/308 is most definitely the best XJ Jag produced in my opinion. Sadly most are rust-buckets but if you are lucky enough to find a well looked after example, with its headlining sorted and cam chain tensioner changed then grab it. Best of the bunch for me is the long wheel base 4.0L Sovereign. Less than 200 left at the time of writing so prices will only go one way.

Nice video. Sport mode affects only the gear changes - it does not affect the suspension in any way . . . this model has no active element to its suspension.
Jaguar's CATS suspension, which IS active, is found only on the supercharged variant of this model. Interesting that you perceived a difference in how 'flat' it cornered . . . there wasn't any difference! This demonstrates the fantastic (and much overlooked) ride-handling balance that Jaguars have!
They certainly can be hustled very quickly - the slightly softer ride, though, makes people think that that they can't! It's a shame most journalists just don't get this . . . if they did, I'm sure Jaguar would be selling millions of cars a year by now, helping British industry to thrive!

I took delivery of a 2005 Jaguar XJ8 Sovereign 4.2 a week ago and have covered a couple of hundred miles in it. After coming from a much loved Alfa Romeo GT 2 ltr petrol, I can say that despite 300 hp on tap, I'm driving the Jaguar far more gently, the ride quality is Rolls Royce standard, and yet with loads of feedback. It has almost zero body roll under hard cornering with colossal overtaking power. The interior ambience is wonderful and entices you to just keep on going for ever. The car makes the most delicious V8 burble under acceleration, but becomes whisper quite when cruising, even at high speed. Its a joy to drive even in heavy traffic due to the complete lack of stress.
I simply can not imagine ever wanting a different car. Pure love!

One of the places I did security guard work at was a Jaguar/Aston recovery type place in Chelmsford/Boreham in the early Noughties. It was insane for a car nut with loads of crashed Jags and Astons sat around in the yard. The company broke the damaged cars for parts, at least that's what I believe went on. It was also incredibly sad with V8s (including supercharged ones) just laying around, unprotected outside, beautiful leather front seats laying open to the elements. The owner of this beautiful Jag would have had a field day, with parts everywhere. For a business that supposedly recycled and reused these parts they didnt really seem to be that bothered about throwing decent stuff away!!! One time I had to escort 2 lorry loads of alloy wheels (minus the tyres) to the scrap yard, the crazy thing was that at least 80% of these beautiful wheels had nothing wrong with them (not even the slightest curb mark!) and they all got slung in with the rest of the scrap and melted down!!! I asked why they didnt make sets up (out of the hundreds they had) and sell them, but they said it wasnt worth the hassle!!! So I'm not sure of how much of these once beautiful Jags and Astons actually did get recycled/reused, bit sad really!!!

Just rewatched this episode as it came up in my feed. I own an x300 sovereign (predecessor to this x308, basically looks very similar) as well as a few “sportier” BMW’s. Now I’m a beema man through and through hence owning them along with the Jaaaaag, but there is just something special about my ole Jaaaaag and many other old Jaaaaags like this. Despite mine showing its age (it was bought as a cheap winter beater runaround 2 winters ago n’uff said why I still have it) it still gets positive comments.
Actually, I have NEVER received so many positive comments when driving a car, from “nice car mate” and gents ‘doffing of one’s cap... Now I used to own a r.w.d specialist garage and have owned, restored, repaired and test driven many cars from Ferrari’s to r.w.d Ford’s to old unreliable Fiat’s. My old Jaaaaag seems to get a much better reception all round. In fact when I think about how many people say “nice car” or similar it’s actually funny. It seems to happen at least once a week. 🤔
Now it doesn’t like to be “pushed” and if you do it is almost as if the car communicates back “do you really have to do that!” I could imagine it as a person, tutting and shaking its head whilst mumbling “bloody swine”. And if you really do “push” it, well, let’s say there is probably a reason you don’t see these aren’t popular with the drift boys... They’re a touch prone to tank slapping 🤦🏻‍♂️

As an S Type owner I can attest to the rust problem, sort of. My previous S Type was 7 years old when I took ownership (the 2.7d V6 sport model) and there was barely a spot of rust on any of that "tinworm" prone steel chassis. In fact it was remarked upon numerous times as the MOT rolled around just how good her underparts looked for her age. Having upgraded early last year to the 4.2 supercharged V8 "R" however, the story was much different. Within the first 6 months I had to have both outer sills cut out and replaced to curb the cancerous amount of rust. Many of the components of this chassis look as though (in my mechanic's own words) "some parts of the chassis look as though they've been left in sea water". Once the welding was completed pre-MOT I decided it would be wise to fork out for a comprehensive underbody treatment with copious amounts of Waxoil to hopefully curtail the issues, at least for now. Add to that the small amount of bubbling paintwork around each of the wheel arches and I know I'm in for a long fight against rust. As a temporary measure I've taken to spraying some WD40 chain wax into the underside of the arches every few weeks and this seems to be holding it at bay. Chain wax, by the way, because it holds a hell of a lot longer in wet conditions than regular WD40 would. She's going in for some serious anti-rust treatment and respraying around the arches before the winter sets in this year.
Aside from the rust, there are of course a few mechanical issues in need of repair. A new air con compressor and dual climate control valve being top of the list. But it's important to remember that a BMW 5 series or Mercedes E Class of the same age would too likely not be without mechanical woes. So is it worth keeping an old Jag roadworthy? In my opinion: yes! Especially if you can get a hold on the rare "R" spec models. The supercharged V8 in mine makes one hell of a sound, and the 400+ bhp coupled with similar amounts of torque is a definite smile-maker. 0-60 mph in 5 seconds, in a car weighing in at around 2 tons is impressive too. The factory fitted Brembo brakes and adaptive suspension also ensure that the handling and stopping power far surpass what you should expect from such a heavy beastie, and whilst some view the Ford era Jags as a stain on the company, look at it this way: The parts for the S Type, which was produced in substantial numbers are easy to come across and won't cost the earth. You'll just have to look around for a competent enough mechanic to do your work. Another positive with the compact 4.2 V8 is that it was a Jaguar design, not a Ford or Ford/Peugeot mash-up. So at least you can say you've got a genuine Jag engine, which purrs by the way. Coupled with a rear silencer delete on the exhaust system (which added about £50 p/a to my insurance bill) means that the engine can really snarl when you get around 2,500 RPM and up. What's the point in having a hungry V8 if you can't hear it? I still can't walk away from my Jag, anywhere, without looking back, smiling and saying "Damn, I love that car!"

They are not roomy in the back. I find that bigger people don't like to be in these cars for long. My XJR R1, I will mod. Forgot what I was going to say. May re edit if I remember.

I have a lovely 95 XJ6 with the 4 liter straight six. It is wonderful to drive.

I've got exactly the same Jag and agree entirely. Best car I've ever driven.

This X308 generation of the Jag really will be timeless and people all over the world will know it's British.
The 3.2 was paid to the ZF 5HP which has given problems in Range Rovers quite common, whereas the 4.0 Supercharged was mated to the Mercedes 5G Tronic box and can handle up to 1000 NM of torque! So the XJR would be my bet a late 51 to 52 car.

They look beautiful will that low roof line, but they have no headroom, if your average height you will have to recline the seat and lie back. The aluminum body cars look like you could actually sit upright in.

I had one of these which I converted to lpg to improve fuel consumption but unfortunately spoiled many other things. I now drive an 07 XJ 8 4.0 Ltr and I love it to bits... even has better fuel economy on longer runs than the 3.2!

I owned a Twingo Gordini not so different from the model you had in the last episode, and I'm totally getting an old jaguar XJ this summer for touring around the UK.

If going non XJR I would look for a six, it has the dated dash carried across from the XJ40 and the drivetrains are bomb proof. Just a bit more quirk and Jagginess.

When I was 19 I was looking for another car to replace my last crap heap. I spent such a long time looking at XJ40s, X300s and these.
Only didn't because I was skint and needed something I knew I could rely on and be affordable to run after the last car bled me dry.
I still have that car, which means I can keep it alongside something else which I don't need to rely on or drive a lot. Time for an XJS V12 I think.
