Brutal British Cool - A 25 Year Old's Modified Supercharged Jaguar XJ Super V8 Daily (XJR Review)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- Alec's a young petrolhead with a discerning taste and who isn't afraid of a big barge. He's got two amazing cars and today I'm looking at his daily driver - this modified 2003 Jaguar Super V8. Disguised as a later model XJR, the 4.2 Litre Supercharged engine produces 450bhp, sounds fantastic and transports you to a different time and place.

Sounds evil. I know the XJR was always loved by Clarkson too.
Of course these Jags are less common than Mercs. There are fewer of us with motoring taste and class who find Merkel Mettal simply soulless.
He even had a grey x308 xjr. I believe it was sold and lived most of its life in Ireland
Cross plane crank V8
@@wildbillharding Merkel Metal!! Gonna steal that.
@@wildbillharding Vehicles in this class do not need driving dynamics (if that's what you mean by soulful). They simply need to be luxurious and comfortable to eat miles and traffic.
That shirt deserves its own review. I give it a 9 !!!...
out of 100
It's like an Aladdin shirt, but with sleeves and a lot more patch than the poor Aladdin.
Yes you are right about that shirt he should have gone to Specsavers
he looks likemr tumble
I really like Jay but the way he dresses it's totally awful
I'm glad to see he made an effort in sartorial elegance department .
The most beautiful car ever. It's timeless. Pity it's discontinued.
I have a stock 2005 XJR owned since 2007 and I simply cannot part with it. Stunning car.
Z XBobbyBoy I have a 2004 XJR and I also won’t part with it at any price!
You can't beat that classic XJ shape for a luxury saloon. Best looking car Jag have ever produced apart from the E-Type which is on a different planet altogether. On the downside you'll be lucky to get 20mpg around town and 25mpg on a longer run but driving that who cares when you're cocooned in that luxury. Stunning job.
This is the best XJ Jaguar build I've ever seen. This Cat can purr in gentelmans manner. Some people spend money on obvious carriages and there are people that like travel with style.
That supercharger whine! The throaty exhaust note. Quintessentially English-luxury interior. Those looks. That pin-you-to-your-seat acceleration. Stunning Jaguar. A TRUE credit to it's owner. 👍
this is the real deal ...this was what Jags were all about ... esp that opulence inside ...
I was thinking the same the whine as your behind someone and then the growl from the exhaust when you pass them makes it great.
This car looks like Jags looked back when these cars were "bad boy" cars and not luxury items. Love the sound and look.
Why my golf supercharger doesn’t sound like this
@@porleg which supercharged Golf do you have? I've had 4 mk 2 G60s and 2 Corrado G60s. Loved the way they all sounded too...
Glorious car, cant beat the supercharger whine. And what a build. I love finding people in my age bracket that support cars like these, and not just thrashing around in stripped out hatchbacks. My step-dad has a 2000 XJR so I'm familiar with the grunt, it really excels on the motorway.
Total respect to Alex (owner) for being 25 and having this. Always wanted one.
I had a CL500 and a E500 at 25 and loved them. Can easily afford to run stuff like that if you're not a idiot with money.
Credit to its builder/ owner. Stunning.
I owned an XJ8 and I loved it. This review nailed everything I loved and hated about. I hated when I dropped it off at the shop for repairs but that melted away the moment I drove it home.
That sound!!!! Total petrolhead nonsense. Love it.
Few words needed except SIMPLY STUNNING 😍
I’ve always loved those. Jaguar always had amazing styling.
Nice video clip. I have a 97 X300 which has rusted along the frame on the underside.Major rust damage but your clip encourages me to keep it and get it fixed. It IS a lovely drive and you are right, who cares about slow traffic when you in one of the best lookers and drives around.Greetings from Germany.
due to all respect i think last generation of this Xjs are most beautiful sedans in the world
Loved this shape. Classic XJ with light weight and modern running gear. Nice and cheap on Auto trader now for a v6 version.
I´ve got the same car, an XJR from 2004. Really lovely
Quick question how are they reliability wise? I'm seriously tempted in getting an XJ super V8 of the same year as you have seen a real nice looking one in black for just over £8,000
@@wetlettuce4768 really bad, I must say. I had issues with the electronic (2 times), the front bumpers, the compressor. Nevertheless I wouldn´t sell the car. The look and cruising around with it is really great!
I had a 2006 xj for 7 years i miss it a lot especially when a 1.4 fiat punto is now daily transport because of reasons 😞
The same bloke who designed the Fiat Multipla designed Jay's shirt. The supercharger wine is intoxicating.
These jags look solid, always liked them 👍
Sounds amazing👍 great work
I always find that driving a Jag feels like a sense of occassion. They are by no means my favourite brand of car. However, with other cars of this ilk, they all feel like solid competent machines that get you from A to B... and then you forget them. When you jump in the Jag it just feels special. There are better cars out there, for sure but Jag just seem to get the a ambiance right when you get in. The real steal is the ride and handling - EVERYTIME. Rides like a magic carpet yet corners like they are on rails.
In fact most cars where suspension is developed in this country handle and ride exceptionally. Why? Because the roads are so shit.
wow that was nice. Always loved Jags. Except I remember the disaster rust buckets that manufacturers insisted on marketing, thus ruining their reps for unreliablility. but the machine, superb !
Jag's were all fantastic looking cars, proper classics, still look awesome up to this XJ platform, after not so much. there isn't a rich vein of great looking classic cars in my opinion in the UK, most are held so for nostalgia, Not So classic Jags, all are awesome restore authentically and customise to be very desirable.
That's the cat's meow! @1:52"
God I want that car so bad, beautiful, fast and sounds amazing
I always love Jaguars I had an Stype 3.0 face-lift
Gorgeous car. Only thing I would change about it are the wheels.
Absolutely stunning car, I've always loved the Jag XJ but and its a mammoth but, rust is a very significant issue with these (where the aluminium panels are bonded to steel chassis)
Ended up not buying one because of rust, affects vast majority of these jags hence prices are very low, shame really
Sorry, but that is incorrect. These are aluminium unibody, there is no steel chassis. Any bodywork corrosion is purely cosmetic.
Amazing cars them, bobo wants his shirt back
Love this car. 👍🏻
Love engine noise
Lock stock and two smoking barrels comes to mind
Can you please share the list of modifications done to that car? :)
One of the original svr engines
I had an aluminium 2003 XJ and i really miss it.
Looks better than any modern BMW.
Am I the only one who really preferred the black leather interior ?
Are you able to list the modifications and how they were done? Thank you!
Drove one for a year proper fast motor.
Thanks for using "kilos" sir!
Drives like Clarkson, picks cars like Hammond, wears shirts like May. This is Top Gear 3 in 1.
Cool ride and review
Now it meows like a jaag!
I have always loved the XJR. I wonder if when he puts it up for sale whether he'd do it online.
Love that
This is how you do a jaguar
Oh look a Jaguar when it actually looked like a Jaguar
They stopped making Jags that look like Jags in 2010. I have a 2004 XJ8 and love it. Rides like a dream. Would like to find a 2009 because it has Bluetooth, digital phone, etc. but i would not give up my 04 - only 77,000 Miles’s on it.
Yeah ditto...
Brands always evolve and so does car design. Personally I think that Jags still look like Jags, i the same way that a Rolls still looks like a Rolls
Have a 2004 XJ8 4.2 stock 294 HP , All Aluminum. Got it with 88,000 miles now up to 120,000 and still flys !!
And they were a sales flop.
That has to be one of the best looking sedans ever made. Take this from a die-hard Mercedes fan. Cheers!!
Love the old shape XJ 👍
Story time.....
Once upon a time my Dad’s friend purchased a brand new Jaguar XJ12, it was metallic purple & being a 8 year old kid (loved cars) I begged for him to take me out for a spin👍🤪
Anyway as all 70’s Jags did it developed a problem while we were out for a spin 😢
Anyway he turned to me and said “just popping into the car spares shop to grab a part”
I’m sitting there as proud as punch because I’m in a JAG!
The bloody thing burst into flames (with me in it) I could have opened the door but (Paul came running out shouting “get out of the fu@king car!”)
I added to the drama by diving out the window 😂🤪😂
Anyway we put it out fixed it and drove back home 👍
Love JAAAAGGGGGG’S!
Have you ever experienced the latest XJ? The model which was produced between 2010 and 2019 and the first full size luxury sedan conceived under Tata Motors leadership!! It's extremely different from the old ones, but......... Man........... You gotta love it!!!!
Are you sure your dad isn’t Jeremy Clarkson? - He drove an XJ12 & that didn’t last long 😂
CS_044
Afraid not and he certainly doesn’t have his money either 😢
Davide Selvi
Yup,
Great cars sir!
Quality
What an awesome car. Serious respect for the owner - fine taste and not afraid to have something different from the crowd.
I love the XJ, in my eyes it is the last good Jaguar, it looks like a Jaguar should. Oldskool!
exactly that - the new ones are dogs
Yep. The last Jag that looked like a Jag.
It’s a pretty nice ford
@@curtisnoble. Just imagine if they would have built in on the Panther platform how durable it would have been!
They are great cars but my xf 3.0d s is the best jag I have ever owned and I’ve had a fair few
I hope that people are still watching and reading here a year later?, I have a bog standard 2003 X350 XJ8, the only one i love more (other than my family) is my Labrador girl Midnight!, Joanna (named for Joanna Lumley another beautiful sophisticated lady!) is amazing, a real marriage of the old and not so old!, Anyway!, the point is, this young guy (the owner) has done an amazing job, im so proud of him, Fantastic work Bro, Jag (with a little help from Ford) built an amazing car to start with! But you have built the car that they should have built as their full spec sports saloon and called the XJR SS?? (SUPER SPECIAL!), A Mercedes/BMW beater!, i think he should go into business (Like Vicarage with Mk2 etc?) specialize in that model! Youve done a Grand job Well done son! That Is A PEACH!, Make More of them!!
Thank you!
Love this review! My ‘first Jaaag’ was a 2003 XJ6 3.0 v6SE which I had for 7 years. I then upped the game and got a 2008 facelift XJR in a stunning pearl grey. It was loaded and utterly wonderful. That eventually gave up its place on the drive for the very beautiful XKR I now have.
I loved the XJ. So underrated very subtle very pretty and sooo nice to drive. Great cars. Really great cars.
Lovely looking jag.. I'm the proud owner of the later x351 supercharged jag.. Must admit the young chap made a real nice job of that trim.. 10/10
I have a diesel one and I love it, and so does everyone who comes into contact with the car. I drove it to southern Spain and back last year and cruising at 80mph or more with five passengers and luggage averaged 40mpg over the entire trip. At 70 I get over 50mpg. It's also pretty fast. The cheapest and most reliable ones to run are probably the V6 petrol ones. And yes they do have laminated side windows.
I getting my friends xj 3.0 v6 petrol in next month approx
It has ford v6 unit
It drives very nice
2005-2007 were the best and are only going up in value. If they’re regularly maintained you can get 400k to 500k on their engines. They really are priceless.
This look should still be around. New ones just blend in.
What, shirts or car?
@@hideouslyugly Definitely NOT the shirt !!
Newer ones are trying to copy Aston's shape. As are Ford.
This look is classy and it looks like an expensive car the new ones look like kias
I know right?! I have an 04 XJ8 and I feel like its such a beautiful car. Now, you can't tell the difference between makes.
As someone who has owned multiple Rolls Royce’s & S classes my daily driver is a 2006 XJ Vanden Plas. after 25 years of experience in luxury cars the jaguar XJ from 05-09 is still my all-time favorite. I have 3 of them and you can park them right next to a Rolls-Royce or any luxury car and they have more class and appeal than their competitors.
People who consider Jags old man cars show everything wrong with the world. Life isn't a race, it's a journey. Slow down. And I say this as a 22 year old.
This is the worse shirt i have ever seen
English fashion 🤣
It's made from his Grannie's duvet cover!
jay is literally the exact dude that clarkson and the gang made fun of for driving convertibles and wearing goofy shirts
Drives like Clarkson, picks cars like Hammond, wears shirts like May. This is Top Gear 3 in 1.
Exactly. Us Englishmen love a dodgy shirt.
Beautiful 👍 I’m on my 6th jag I just keep coming back to them. I’ve had Porsche,BMW,Bentley & I always end up back in a 5:0 V8 supercharged Jag ❤️ Effortless power & refinement. Ps: where did he get the Jag cushions (cool)
I know this car and its owner personally, I find myself honoured to do so.
The review and the reviewers comments on both car and owner are wholeheartedly deserved and a true reflection of both.
The car is brutal, doesn't look it, but brutal none the same.
This, as with all XJ Super V8's, allows them to travel unnoticed 95% of the time, only spotted by those who like to see a rare glimpse of days gone by and hanker after the luxury the Big Jaguar would provide them on their daily grind.
However, looks can be deceiving, some of those classic Jaguar XJ's might look like another waftmobile for the plutocracy, when in fact they are packing heat.
Those of us lucky enough to own one will never tire of the Superchargers whine when woken, nor will we matter one jot at the scenery missed to port and starboard, as the horizon is pulled towards us.
All Super V8's have this ability as you sit there cosseted in leather , lambswool and wood, it truly is a wondrous place to be.
No car is without fault, but drive one of these and any fault becomes nothing more than a mere hindrance.
Nice one Alec and thank you for allowing JayEmm to review and share with the world.
I have had an 04 xjr for 5 years
the whole time I have been amazed by it
I have always described it like you did here
because others are always wanting to know
I said
"it does what I want it to do"
its the only proper full description of that ride
Well f#&@! done mate. Very nice review. You were fluid, genuine and generally entertaining. This car is one of my all time favorites and IMO one that is beautiful enough to transcend time. Hats off to Alex for the conversion. I had the opportunity to buy an '09 XJR in Indigo Blue over dove grey with charcoal piping back in 2011(last year for the body style) and I passed it up. Still kicking myself to this day!...in fact, as I write this. Cheers.
Glad you enjoyed it!
That shirt is straight outta Rosie and Jim.
It clashes with itself.
Very nice car. I love this "oldschool" Jaguar styling.
Possibly the best looking car I have ever seen! 👌
Wow first off all absolutely stunning credit to the owner he’s done an amazing job on changing the looks sounds amazing especially the supercharger whine and second loved the video as always you smash it from the start to the end as always thanks for all your hard work for making these videos cheers
Brilliant review and amazing car, I am on both the UK and USA Jaguar forums and have followed the progress of this car. I also have a Radiance Red 2004 Super V8, the supercharger whine is addictive haha. Cannot bear to part with mine even though I have other cars, I will certainly be keeping mine a long time, mind you it has covered 192000 miles now !
So just run in then ? Lol
Alex did an awesome job. Every vid you release = an evening on Autotrader and piston heads
I own a 2005 Jaguar XJR, and I love it - and what performance!. The car attracts a lot of attention, the body style being much better than the present XJ, which is quite pleasant but tends to blend in and is nowhere near as beautiful. I now realize, however, that my life is incomplete - that shirt!! Where did you get it?
Thank you James for a fantastic video & review of my car! Glad to see some of the modifications have sparked a bit of debate!
Fabulous car mate well done. I’ve got at 2004 Super V8 myself - your changes look nicely done.
Lovely Motor, well done!!
Peace From London. 👍🏻
Alec Escolme , what are the rear seats out of?
@@frazuli A Super V8 with split rear seat option
My eldest son has just turned eighteen and is looking to buy a car after he passes his driving test.
How did you manage to get your fire breathing cars insured at your age?
why he didnt showed a little more of the backseat (its function, use of reclining, screens in the headrests, hidden compartments etc) it's very important to show if we speak about luxury British vehicle
I’m 23 and don’t plan on getting rid of my 03 XJR anytime soon 😜
You think one of these would be good for a first car?
@@brendanharvey3583 I would say yes. It was my first vehicle purchase. Can't recommend this car enough. I loved mine and hated letting it go. It's sleek, fast and gets compliments everywhere. The only reason I traded mine is because I live in Wyoming and we have snow on the road about 5-6 months out of the year, so I needed an AWD car. But my XJR lasted me from 100k miles to 160k with only major repair being new water pump, pulleys and belt for about $400. I drove it to Cali and back twice and some road trips, and its last hurrah was a 12 hr trip to Omaha to pick up my Dodge Charger 5.7 AWD. Take care of it with regular maintenance and it will take care of you.
I own a 08 XJ Vanden pla with 65.000 miles. As I have M B as my daily driver but must once or twice a day visit the garage to spend a minute or two just to look at it. Still get many compliments when I take it out.
What a fabulous car - top marks for Alex driving something different. I do love Jags! Great video. The exhaust note is stunning 😍
My family has had a 2005 XJL Super V8 since new. Many other cars have come and gone, but the XJ is here to stay
Jay!! You've just doubled the value of all the XJ Supercharged!
5:57 Step 1. Hit the speed limit. Step 2. Then put your foot down. - JayEmm on Cars 😁😁
Beautiful car and they are very reliable despite what some say
The engines are bullet proof
Jay Emm bags under the eyes and that shirt mate. Must have been a blinder the night before. 😂
J A Yo Fam This is about the X358 Fam not The Man's Shirt! Honestly?🤷🏿♂️
The Big Man Big Al. Yo Big Al. Honestly it’s really about being able to put a sentence together no matter how big a night you had or what your shirt looks like even if you get about in Jaguar. You keep trying though cup cake.
J A , what are you, 6 years old?
frazuli 7 years! If you must know.

You write very well for a 7 year old
When your shirt clashes with the wood in a car.. ;)
Classy car.......Very ordinary shirt.... :D
It's hideous! 🙈😁
THE GENERAL .needs to be!
*When your shirt clashes with EVERYTHING in the car!!!
There, fixed it.
@@lefunk22 *When your shirt clashes with EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE IN THE UNIVERSE. Now that's fixed.
Let's not forget woman love Jaguars. I've had 3. XJ6, my last one was a 2002 XJ6 fot 1,200. My husband painted it the original racing green. I loved it. In 2017 it got demolished by a hurricane. There fantastic cars as long as the person before you took good care of it. Just always check your Bosch relay systems.
Would have done well to post the 0-100kph time for us to see how the completed engine modifications affected the overall acceleration Sand power
Love the sound of that supercharger! Thrilling to drive.
All the best, fellow young Jag driver!
I fully agree with your video, Jay, you truly captured the attraction of Jaguars.
Although I have to say the scene at 6:09 scared the living daylights out of me (being used to right hand traffic)...
Having just come back from a drive in my X358 I was particularly pleased to see this review of the beautifully modified X350 Super and the pleasure it gave you. Mine steers and handles way better than it has any right to and gives me a big grin every time she's out to play.
Nicely done, I do have a question, not a criticism, just a question. The Super V8 was a rare car, only a handful built in that year and are probably worth more left unaltered. The XJR was easier to come by and readily available in the colours Alex choose. Why not just go to the XJR (with the same supercharged engine) and modify that instead of taking a perfectly good "rare" SuperV8 out for the market, when there weren't that many to begin with?
Still... vicely done but why?
ChanceDogUSA The previous owner did the respray, which was Black Cherry, a limited edition colour. The XJR came with less options as standard, it would have meant even more work. I prefer the comfort suspension over sport too.
The last real Jaguar. Look at the wood and nice leather. Now I regret the plastics in these new generation of Jaguar
The new jaguars smell like curry now
@@ormand3000 shit!
Have you even been in one
Dear Jay, I have just come out of hospital after a 7 week cancer treatment and I just wanted to say thank you as your reviews have been a pleasant accompaniment to me thru the long hours. Ps I drive a XJ 350 4.2ltr V8 but one day soon l would love to upgrade to the XJR.

I have relatives in hospital now so I am very happy to hear I have been helpful in some small way!
Just keep up the good work!,
Do you have a Merc S class? You never mention it.
Does he?
i was wondering that too?
I currently own an Xtype estate and a 3.0 V6 XF, but this is like the best of both of those. Stunning car, and really nicely updated. I'm curious about the jagdroid system !
Holds it's own in 2019!!
Lovely motor, many thanks.
Peace From London. 👍🏻👍🏻
Another fantastic 'surprise'. Mix between classic English wood-panelled elegance but an unexpectedly yobbo exhaust and supercharger whine.
I'm with you, would very happily own it.
This is a bit how I feel about my 2011 Taurus SHO. Obviously not a Jag but compared to my other car, a 2013 Scion FRS I’ve owned since new, but it’s comfortable and fast and enjoyable to drive in it’s own way which is completely opposite to the FRS.
The SHO, one of the best factory sleepers I've ever seen!
Not the sort of car 25yr old Brits drive, but he's done a lovely job.
That supercharger whines more than my Mrs.
I'm 19 and I would KILL to own this car, my dads XKR has really helped me fall in love with jags as a whole. This would make a perfect daily that you can still have fun with
I had a rover 75 at the age of younger. Loved it dearly, I've had a jaguar s type, loved it.
