On our ranch we never separate our dogs. Everyone eats at the same time and sleeps under the same roof, people and dogs. We also never leave our senior dogs behind. While still able they help immensely in training the younger dogs. Retirement for our dogs just means riding around in the air conditioned truck watching the youngsters work 😂
there is nothing better than watching a border collie work my old dog has passed now and he was my best friend I miss him every day its been 10 years now and I can not bring myself to go thru it again enjoy every minute you have with them it goes fast great vid thanks
Our herding dogs live in the house with us. Yes, it does make for more floor cleaning and we use slipcovered furniture, but I love their companionship indoors. ❤
I'm picking up my 8week old B/C dog next week. Although he won't be working, he will be a regular visitor to the farm, where he was born, visiting his parents, and some of his siblings , to run the fields and socialise as much as he wants. He is from great stock, and his grand parents are still working dogs. ( Welsh hill farmers ) It's taken me 5yrs to get the courage to get another dog, after losing my best mate Max, a border terrier, who was with us for 18yrs. The grief is still bad .but at 73, I am hoping I won't have to go through it again. Thanks for sharing this vid.
Peg is a beautiful baby! Our 16 year old corgi is having the same issues. He's thrilled to putz around while we work. He especially enjoys finding old men and tottering after them.
I had an Afghan hound that did that without no one taught her. She rounded up the sheep and move the group up and dawn. Very independent and smart dog.
We’ve rescued two collies who didn’t get through the training, love them to bits so intelligent our girl Bella’ s mother has been retired at 15 and still looks for work
Nice tutorial :) I LOVE these dogs. My sister had a farm in Pennsylvania (USA) and it was so cute to watch at the end of the work session when Kate said "that'll do", the collie would leap across a fence and jump in the pond for a bit of refreshment in summertime :) I'm a city girl and feel sad when I see these beautiful creatures confined to small lots and maybe lucky to go to a park to catch a frisbee occasionally
City dweller. 1 dog; soon maybe 2. The park is a daily ritual for us and for many dog owners I know. They also like going to “town” and sniffing all the smells, seeing the other dogs and getting fussed over by the people who admire them. I do often feel like they need a job, though and wonder if they miss that.
I have border collie in fact he’s my third, and it’s amazing watching their instincts even though my dogs were pets how they like to round everything up , my second one used to bring my horse down to the gate of a huge field gently without any interference from me, of course the horse was willing as he guessed there would be a bucket of feed in it for him.😂
We’ve had three over the years when I was younger, just as pets. Sadly one of ours instinctively rounded up a horse and nipped its hoof. The horse mortally wounded the ageing dog with a swift kick. I miss them all dearly. Amazing animals and so clever.
My first one's instinct was unfortunately very strong. She used to herd everything. Birds, cyclists that came by the fence, groups of children when we had birthday parties at home...
Long time ago, my family had a ranch house in an valley, and many families in that area had horses, but most people worked during the day, not at homes, so it was a very quite and peaceful valley and attracted wild horses and cayotes(even black bears). We had a border collie whose hobby was chasing those wild horses and cayotes away because he thought that it was his responsibility to protect my neighbors horses, cows and dogs. I witnessed several times he gathered my neighbor's two horses together, so I had to keep him inside of fence since then. I have a new border collie puppy now and also has the instinct of herding. Amazing! 😄😄😄
They must want to work for you. My (rescue) border collie, was actually "kicked off" a ranch, because she wouldnt work. She is the most laziest border Collie I have seen. She is such a city girl and loves to sleep in. However she gots the smarts, and sometimes, she is in the mood to run on a field and she lets out that dormant border collie part. Love them
I adopted a dog from the country and he has some stalking instincts, I think he must be part border. I never thought that him waking me up so early every morning could be genetic until I read your comment. 😂
What a beautiful Border Collie and her skill! I used to trial them and loved that period of my life, but most like my current have been pets or obedience trialing pets since my first in 1980. My best was so well bred that she made the novice I am seem skilled and had several 1st and 2nd place ribbons in sheepdog trials. I’ve had them constantly since 1980 except for my few short years in the Army. My current 2 year old Winston loved your video so much that he was jumping up on the table in front of our TV to be closer to the sheep and your beautiful girl that has pretty much the same markings as him all through watching this video. Thank you for entertaining my current best friend!
This was the best training video I have seen yet. You explained the commands… explained what the dog understands. Excellent. Thank you most kindly for this video.
HOW BEAAUTIFUL IT IS TO SEE THE SHEEP HERDER WITH HIS BORDER COLLIE WORKING TOGETHER. THE ABSOLUTELY COORDINATED CONTROL OF THE HERD. I WONDER HOW MANY THOUSANES OF YEARS IT TOOK FOR MAN TO FORM THIS UNION WITH THE DOG FAMILY TO DO THIS JOB? IT IS JUST BEAUTIFUL TO WATCH LIKE A BALLET.
This is best dog herding video for me. Very informative and you explained clearly and to be able to see Gwen in action .. just a bit of AWESOMENESS 💜 🙏🏾 thank you.
@@CotswoldFarmPark Someone dumped a border collie on us about 6 years ago, along with a blue healer and rottweiler mixed. They were badly abused and starved...the first time I swept the porch off he attacked the broom, they shake tremendously and run off to the house at the sound of a gun, even way in the distance, they are extremely scared when we burn the trash. I started out slow brushing the border collie with the broom, he is much better now and I can sweep without him shaking, my husband and I are so glad they found us and stayed, we just love those babies! The border collie is a big guy, I bet he is atleast 85 lbs.
Dogs have been part of my life since I was four years old I convinced my parents I *would* take care of a male long-haired German Shepherd puppy that grew into a 120 pound beast of a dog, Little did I know at that time that my dog Butch Cassidy would teach me so much about life and death before I even turned sixteen years old. Now some 18 dogs later I'm still shedding tears over the loss of my last German Shepherd Dog. RIP, Amber girl. ♥🐕🦺♥
The only other piece I've ever seen on border collie work was in the movie Babe and I found it fascinating. I'm going to watch this many times. I love this.
We're so glad you enjoyed our episode! The work and training they put into producing Babe is tremendous it's true. We've had quite a few trained animals as movie stars ourselves!
My 8 month Border Collie puppy(50 lbs) always tries to herd my German Shepherd (12 months and 90 lbs) and the two energetic babies turned my well-maintained lawn in backyard into muddy playground, but I totally understood and have never blamed on either of them.
Thank you for sharing this!! I recently began watching videos of sheep herding, this is my second channel. It amazes me how their instincts to please are so heightened and their intelligence goes with it all. I didn't grow up on a farm or anything and I can imagine the hard work it would take. I am so thankful for videos such as yours to give me a glimpse of it! God bless you going forward
Thank you! I found this video very useful in terms of learning the correct commands, and just working a mob of sheep - took the confusion I have had, away - it seems to be straight-forward. I have a 3yr old, well-bred border collie with strong herding instincts, and we have been training to do flyball since he was young. But I also want to do some herding with him. Luckily, I have two big pet ewes and Dibbs has shown his natural talents by helping me to get the sheep out of the house yard regularly, though now I feel it's a good time for he and I to learn the commands, and do some solid training. I'm really looking forward to it and I know Dibbs is too. Again, thank you.
Here I again noticed how funny sheepdog commands are. You have sit, stand, stop and lie down but whatever you say the dog will just stop and do whatever it wants staying there.
I’ve studied some canine psychology and border collies are number 1 in inference intelligence and have incredible sensitivity and empathy. They are the smartest of most breeds.
I am so glad I found your channel. I love your videos and your gentle nature with animals. I live in Colorado US but I hope to visit your farm next time I am in UK. Thank you!
I wish my boy could have done some herding but hes my couch potato pet. Loved this video, not just me but my border collie watched it as well. Pampered pooch on this end.
We've been super busy making changes to the farm park and getting ready for a big season ahead. Our first episode of our new lambing series airs this Sunday and Gwen is featured 😊

It won't be our main focus since I don't own a farm - we will be focusing on canicross, bikejoring and sports like obedience, nosework and agility but I would not be able to justify myself not letting a border collie work with sheep at all
This is just incredible to watch. It makes me want to buy a herd of sheep so I can then get a border collie and watch her in action all day.
Well-treated working dogs are always so happy. Shows how much clarity about how to please their owners actually matters to a dog.
100% can't beat the body language of a working dog, nasty good.

Glad to hear it. I don't call being locked up in cage on its own and very dirty "a good retirement". This is just cruel in my eyes.
@@cragzuk Yeah, the farmer that I follow from time to time keeps his retired sheepdogs in the house. The rest of them get to hanging out in the barn.

I think that the technical word for it is "driving" the old men?
Obedient and fascinating Border Collies are awesome ! Love the sweet respect you provide them !
