Annie mentioned how they used more electric guitars in the 80's and she didn't like the way it turned out. I saw them on Camera Camera tour and it was fantastic!! It was interesting and fun to see Mick Dunford get down and dirty a little bit playing electric guitars! They had keboard player Peter Gosling and drummer Peter Barron, and they were both monsters and the band just soared. Fantastic setlist, and there is footage on UA-cam. Renaissance fans will love it.
Wow I never thought I see the day of a panel discussion Renaissance good for you guys there an amazing band who's brought me personally many many hours of listening pleasure 👍 Saw them in there heyday in the 70s and they were just spot on 😃
I will never be grateful enough for the ranking the albums Pete made a few years ago. It made me have a listen to Renaissance and there is no way back from there!!!
To have a band member speak about the album is incredibly special. Because of SOT I purchased so far 4 albums from Renaissance and plan to add more. It was so nice for Annie to agree to be on the show tonight, really made it exciting and special. Annie: Thank you so much for being on the show.
Thanks Annie for mentioning Rochester, NY. That's where I grew up, that's where I heard Mother Russia on WCMF-FM, which introduced me to progressive rock at age 15, and that's where I saw Renaissance at the Eastman Theater with 35 members of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra! Renaissance was my favorite band then and still is. Regarding the length and quiet moments of Scheherazade, those both contribute to the majesty of the song. This is music that rewards you every second.
My favourite ever episode of "In The Prog Seat". Renaissance are a fantastic band and Scheherazade is my favourite album by them. Annie has the voice of an angel and is also a lovely down to earth person.
Wow this is cool, I don't watch this channel often, but interesting to see Annie Haslam here... I didn't know about Renaissance but I saw them open for Steve Hackett back in... 2011? They had a new album The Mystic and the Muse, and her voice was still solid. The only time I ever saw an opening band get an encore.
I purchased this album when it was released. I was thirteen years old. I had many "lighting effects" in my room, and would light them all and listen to "A Trip To The Fair" with all the lights swirling around me. I think I'll give this a spin now.....
Can`t tell you how much I enjoyed this episode. Hearing Annie Haslam talk about this great album and giving some history around it and the band, kept a smile on my face all the way through. One of the all time great voices in rock, and a really cool person.
I don't have any favorite Annie Haslam (Renaissance) song because everything she sang she turned into a masterpiece. It's very hard to define which is best for me. "Turn of the Cards" is my fav album though.
I think l have a new favorite episode of In the Prog Seat now… this one! I’ve been a Renaissance fan for decades now, and Ms. Haslam is my fave female vocalist of all time. Unfortunately, l was too young to see them in their heyday in the 1970s. However, l did get to see them play live a few times in the 2000s. In fact, a member of my “Prog-Rock Posse,” Jason Hart, was in the band as a keyboardist for a number of years. Annie has an amazing voice and still sounds excellent to this very day. Scheherazade and Other Stories is my second favourite (UK spelling!) Renaissance record, just a micrometer behind Turn of the Cards. I love all four tracks on the album and it’s extremely difficult to pick a favorite tune. One day it’s one, the next another, etc. As you gentlemen - and lady - so eloquently stated, the key ingredients to the music of Renaissance were: the Dunford/Thatcher songs, Annie’s vocals, Tout’s kinetic keyboard work and Camp’s bad @$$ bass skills. While Renaissance may have never touched the zeitgeist like other 70s giants - Zep, Yes, Aerosmith, The Who , etc. - they remain our lovely, ethereal, secret. And, as The Professor said, we’ll always embrace their phenomenal run of records from the 1970s. Cheers from Noo Yawk, ova heyah. Rock Out & Prog On… in every lexicon! ~ Davey Cretin
That was the first Renaissance album l bought. Got it in late 1975. My second favorite only to Ashes Are Burning. Annie and Ann Wilson by far my 2 favorite female singers of all time.
We had a radio station in San Diego play A Trip to the Fair several times when this album was released in 1975. I loved it and immediately went out and bought it. I’m still a huge Renaissance fan. I can’t imagine any radio station here playing a song like that nowadays.
I fell in love with Annie Haslam when I heard the Renaissance Live at Carnegie Hall record, all those years ago. And FM Radio (WPLJ in NY, I believe... WNEW too?) would play Ashes Are Burning, and Carpet of the Sun.... a good time for rock music. Still love you, Annie! This episode is a real coup for the In the Prog Seat!
What an excellent idea, having an iconic vocalist, talk about one of her iconic albums. So glad you all behaved yourselves around Annie 😁 I also feel that live version is the best. I used to play their earlier albums on my high school radio station to much acclaim. Annie is proof you're never too old to roll 'n roll. Stay healthy, young lady! 💓 Btw, loved the "The Night Bird" references. Didn't she also announce the band on the Carnegie Hall album?
I’m not a regular viewer of “In the Prog Seat” but that was a great episode and Annie Haslam was awesome ! There are very few perfect albums and I thought that the criticism in the show was honest and constructive and that Annie responded in the right way 🇬🇧
Such a great show - Annie is such a pleasant, down to earth person…so refreshing to see someone of such great talent be so nice and humble: Once again, you guys outdid yourselves…Bravo :)
This isn't my favorite Renaissance album, but it is a great album. Ocean Gypsy is the best track on it for me. All the others are great, but not up to level of Ocean Gypsy for me. I am not drawn to the "softie" songs of theirs's, but this is an exception.
Welcome to amnesia club hahaha she is so cute trying to remember stuff and i am not trying to be rude i love her very much amazing angelic voice.Wonderful show warms my heart.Annie and Maggie Reilly forever.
Part of my new discovery in the prog genre over the last 3 years includes Renaissance, and have since listened to Cards & Ashes; I own Scheherazade, too, and haven't gotten there just yet but now will have to very soon. In honor of Annie, who was a joy to listen to and looked stunning this evening, when I hear Live at Carnegie, for the first time in the near future, I'll always remember that I purchased it in real-time while listening to her talk about it on In the Prog Seat. Great show, guys.
My first and favorite Renaissance album. My friend & fellow musician Dave Keyes [years ago departed, sadly] was the bassist in the band with Annie through much of the 2000s and spoke so glowingly of her; it’s easy to see why.
Wow what a great show. Wonderful seeing Annie Haslam and hearing all the stories and info about the making of this epic album! That’s one Classy and talented lady!
Novella is my 7th favorite album in all music history. I'd pay $100.00 for a seat in the last row at the Scottish Rite Auditorium to see that album performed live. Especially The Sisters, which has not ever been played live.
Great show, with great contributions by Annie. I particularly liked her touching tribute to the Renaissance guitarist Mick Parsons who died before just before they made "Prologue". Contrary to what she claims, she has a great, vivid memory - she may get a venue wrong sometimes, but who wouldn't ? Also enjoyed Luis' fresh take on the album, although he should perhaps refrain from using phrases like "blow smoke up your..." etc. in the presence of a lady.
Annie set the mood before we started recording. I would agree with you otherwise. She was nothing short of delightful and funny, but not a prude. i certainly respect her and hold her in very high regard - it was not my intent to insult her, and she wasn't offended. just to help you understand the context of the conversation. Cheers!
Thanks for this. Annie is the best sort of rock star - not at all rock starry. 48 years later and still a lovely woman. The album is excellent, of course.
❤awesome album and my 2nd favourite of the band after "Turn of the cards ". Annie is as always fantastic, the trio of Sullivan,Tout and Camp are muscians on the highest level.
Thank you so much for this show as usual Pete and everyone ! I only listened to 3 albums by Renaissance including Scheherazade and although what we call ''patoral prog'' isn't necessarily my cup of tea, I definitely did enjoy listening to Renaissance and I intend to listen to other albums in their discography, especially the Live At Carnegie Hall ! See you sometimes soon, Peace out !!
Great vdo. Why does the first Renaissance album remain such an underrated masterwork ? It is nearly a classical piece of music. This was before Annie, but with Keith and Jane Relf.
Good pick Ken, great to see Annie on the panel, I took my son to see them last year when they came to São Paulo and it was a great show, Annie’s voice is still amazing too, this album is also not my favorite album by them, but it’s the first album I purchased by them in the mid 80’s when I discovered them and I listened to it a lot.
Fortunate to have called up Allison Steele a few times on wnew and she a sweered and played Renaissance. After all these decades I luv Renaissance albums and wish they were longer, the music is so appealing.
i picked up live at carnegie hall and scheherazade both on vinyl , a few years ago at the local salvation army but my old turntable broke, i finally picked up a new one, and a couple of more lps at the new record store near me, prologue and ashes are burning, and other assorted prog lps also, great interview by the way.
Obviously Annie and Renaissance are the best. Great show. But special kudos to Luis for his discussion of the songwriting, which is really the foundation of any band. Michael Dunford needs to be studied because his composition is second to none. Maybe you guys could do an episode about progressive rock composition. Get in the weeds a little, though not too, too technical. Talk about composers like Dunford, Ian Anderson, Greg Spawton, etc. Entertaining and educational too. Thanks again for a great show.
It’s funny Ken mentioned Al Dimeola. In ‘78 I saw Renaissance in Long Beach and Al Dimeola opened. I had seen him a year earlier on The Casino tour. Renaissance was touring for Song For All Seasons then. I was just familiar with Turn Of A Card so excited to see them. Blew me away. 🤘
I only have turn of the cards...or whatever it's called. I only started my dive into this band a few months ago, so this will be the next album I check out.
Fantastic show Pete and thanks to Ken got to listen to this classic prog album. Have Turn of the cards and Novella LPs with me and sure to give them a listen too. Which are the essential Renaissance albums ? Have you done a ranking of the albums show on Renaissance ? Pls advise. Thanks once again to the entire team of In the Prog Seat and also to Annie for have graced the occasion and making the show all the more enjoyable with her inputs.
Amazing episode, guys. It'd be awesome to see more special guests in the future. Perhaps one of the Yes guys for Tales From Topographic Oceans... featuring of course Luis Nasser.
Will be interesting with Old Man Prog's pick. I'm not sure this band is for me, but I need to give my Renaissance Live vinyl another chance. There's also a great video on the UA-cam where Mikael Åkerfeldt talks about getting drunk with Steven Wilson, and Wilson asks Annie Haslam's ex-husband Roy Wood if she was good in bed. 😂
I think that Michael Dunford deserves more recognition. Granted, his more important contribution was writing rather than playing. Whilst Jon Camp and John Tout are the virtuoso musicians in the band, who should always be mentioned when listing top prog bass and keyboard players, Michael's acoustic guitar playing often reminds me of mid-period Genesis, particularly "A Trick Of The Tail". His playing was not flashy but fitted in perfectly with Renaissance's music.
Looks like my comment was deleted. I'm guessing because I provided a link to listen to the latest Renaissance live album on B*andcamp. I guess links are a no no. Sorry....
The most criminally underrated band of the original prog era.
Amen to that, though I might also nominate Camel for that "award."
Holy crap! Annie Haslam is in the Prog Seat. That's amazing. Can't wait for this!
Should be so good, a fantastic band!
I didn't know she's gonna be in tonight, that's awesome !
Annie mentioned how they used more electric guitars in the 80's and she didn't like the way it turned out. I saw them on Camera Camera tour and it was fantastic!! It was interesting and fun to see Mick Dunford get down and dirty a little bit playing electric guitars! I couldn’t like this episode more. Wow Annie…. Im a huge fan of hers.
Nice to hear Jon Camp's great Bass playing getting mentioned a lot during this show.
Really psyched to see Annie talking about a classic album with the Prog Seat crew.
Wow I never thought I see the day of a panel discussion Renaissance good for you guys there an amazing band who's brought me personally many many hours of listening pleasure 👍 Saw them in there heyday in the 70s and they were just spot on 😃
Luv the fantasy of Renaissance, evocative, timeless
Please have more frequent Annie Haslam podcasts. She has so much charm and anecdotes, past and present.
I will never be grateful enough for the ranking the albums Pete made a few years ago. It made me have a listen to Renaissance and there is no way back from there!!!
What an episode! I love Annie!😀

Regarding the length and quiet moments of Scheherazade, those both contribute to the majesty of the song. This is music that rewards you every second.
"Ocean Gypsy" is the song that I used to turn the uninformed onto Renaissance, and it always worked!
My favourite ever episode of "In The Prog Seat". Renaissance are a fantastic band and Scheherazade is my favourite album by them. Annie has the voice of an angel and is also a lovely down to earth person.

Hello Gary, I did some listening too : )

Wonderful seeing Annie here!
Sometimes you can hear some Franz Liszt in John Tout’s playing.
Jon Camp’s voice complements Annie’s voice perfectly.
It really does.

What a wonderful episode. Having Annie on was a masterstroke.
Was privileged to see them in 1976, which was simulcast on FM radio. Remains one of my Top 3 favorite concerts of all time!
We had a radio station in San Diego play A Trip to the Fair several times when this album was released in 1975. I loved it and immediately went out and bought it. I’m still a huge Renaissance fan. I can’t imagine any radio station here playing a song like that nowadays.

Mesmerizing. Thank you so much for bringing engagingly real time life into my home. Renaissance is perfection. SOT is so important.
Great show. From Annie's recollections to Luis' compositional breakdowns (from an impartial ear) some really good insights. Well done indeed.

It was Raphael Rudd who played piano with them during the 1980’s when they did the unplugged tour, in which no one could remember his name.
You wouldn't believe how hard he hit the piano. He just pulverized it!! Played Harp too. Died in auto accident.
Fortunate to have called up Allison Steele a few times on wnew and she a sweered and played Renaissance. After all these decades I luv Renaissance albums and wish they were longer, the music is so appealing.

There's also a great video on the UA-cam where Mikael Åkerfeldt talks about getting drunk with Steven Wilson, and Wilson asks Annie Haslam's ex-husband Roy Wood if she was good in bed. 😂
Wow nobody should ask these kinds of questions, how inappropriate of him !😐
I should also mention he said he was good-natured about it and not mad. I'm a fan, but Wilson is a twat.
I’m sure it was tongue in cheek, Is that video still on UA-cam? If so where can I find it?
