- Hammers are perhaps the most used tool across nearly all trades in all ages. Today I'm forging a blacksmithing hammer to use in my shop.

As someone who just forged a 2lb hammer by hand this weekend at my local blacksmith association fall conference, that press is looking mighty nice!
hammers in medium carbon and any tooling, especially drifts and cut offs made of high carbon or leaf spring, make a press or power hammer shine with any price worthy rose tinted "I want that" gleamyness.....I got a bigger hammer💪

they used cast Bronze hammers to make forged iron into hammers.

Wow! That turned out really nice! So cool to see how the original idea of a rock tied to a stick has become more sophisticated to steel with an integral handle all while maintaining the original purpose.
Nicely done, as always. I've been taught to treat new hammer handles as a DIY kit so I can shape them to my preferred geometry, and you certainly left enough material to do that.

I would love a hammer from your shop! So far we have an anvil and a forge. I am waiting for a good 2 foot stump to seat our anvil into. Then we are keeping an eye out for leaf springs or used up coil springs. We are close!

I really like shorter handles on forging hammers like the one you just made. You aren't holding it at the end of the handle too often but when you do, you might as well grab a bigger hammer that is probably within reach.

Is there any value in adding a slight counterbalance to the handle, like a pommel but for hammers? I’ve never seen one, so I’m curious.
Am wanting to make a geology hammer for a friend, made 4 jelly rolls out of alternating layers of leafspring and grader blade, they have a few spots that didnt weld in the jelly roll part, am hoping I can soak them in vinager, then acetone, put them on a canister with jackhammer bit cross between them so everything will all weld at the same time and the jackhammer bit will be the core down the middle of the billet to take all the abuse without deforming. Question is: will the vinager and acetone be enogh to remove the scale between the jelly layers that didn't weld? More outer last bit of the roll, some halfway around amd one almost one whole wrap. And can i harden the s series jackhammer bit with oil so the other metals wont crack? Or does it need water?
And update on the bowie canister, it welded up nicely, but the paint didnt keep the whole can from welding to the billet, maybe 1/3 of one side didn't stick, how many layers of paint do you recommend?

It's what is comfortable, I prefer gripping 4-6" from the hammer head, on a lighter hammer your grip migrates further away I find.
How long was it taking you to produce a hammer before? Did it improve with this hammer?
Also did you make the copper bracelet? I like it, has a different appearance than most others.
I don't know the time, but yes I was able to streamline the process. No, I purchased the copper bracelet.
