- There are now household appliances that can dry and grind our food scraps. Given that we are encouraged to divert our food scraps from landfill, drying and grinding them may be a great option in small, rural or northern communities where recycling them effective may be difficult or costly. This is not a composting process, and the product is not compost. It is stable and relatively odor free when stored dry. The product can be used in the garden, composted or saved for anaerobic digestion. Its a fun option to explore!

Drying and grinding is completely new to me. However, I have been trying to think of a way to start an initiative in my small Kansas town where I could get food scraps from restaurants or households and turn them into feed for chickens or pigs. Do you know of economical appliances that I could buy to give to anyone who would participate. I could give the Paticipants water tight containers to put dried material in which I would switch out for empty ones. Sorry. I hope that makes sense. This is just a mind-blowing concept to me. Composting dried and ground kitchen waste is not as simple as just wetting it up and turning it. Its best mixed with yard waste or wood chips at about 10-20%. I used 10% dried food waste with 90% screened yard waste and added water to make a mix with 60% moisture, and an air-filled porosity of 450 kg/m3. The yard waste adds the microbes and the porosity, and the food waste adds the energy!
