  • Who would have thought that oxygen can be depleted so rapidly and before temperature can increase in a composting windrow. Composting high energy organic material introduces a few challenges - one of them being rapid depletion of oxygen. This impacts the technology that we choose for composting.

In the UK we have windrows 15ft they still compost you should try leaving the compost longer between turning we do every 9 weeks

Thanks Paul. I understand that over time the temperatures and oxygen will increase. Because of the cost of composting real estate in a high rainfall climate, my goal is to obtain mature compost in a maximum of 4 weeks. I don't have the luxury of waiting 9 weeks!

My work-around for this is to add N in two steps. First mix gets only enough to heat it up. Second mix gets enough to finish the job. Easy for me because I'm only managing 8-9 yards.

Sounds good - most material high in nitrogen also have lots of available carbon

Hmm, you've got me thinking. First, we should be checking temperatures at different depths on our turned windrows. And second, to make sure we blow in enough dried carbon into our composting bedding pack barn so windrows made from this material doesn't get too hot in the middle.

Thank you SO MUCH for making this video. This is exactly what I wanted to see because I really want to test this method out too! is there a particular size that the compost windrow or pile has to be to have this passive oxygen intake effect?

Hi Jacob, I have seen this windrow effect on piles that are 3 or 4 ft high, and I have seen it on piles that are 30 ft high. Its all about the air-filled porosity and available energy!

Hi, great video, Im really invested in the series of compost videos, bt I could find the video you mention at the end of this one. was it never posted? or am I just missing it?

Hello, Mr. Al-Fadl, I am from Algeria. I would like to ask you. I made compost from cow and sheep animal dung, sawdust, vegetables, and fruits. I was stirring it, and after 3 months it became ripe and its color became deep brown. Its smell is like dirt mixed with rain. When I planted coriander seeds, I tried it, nothing grew, so I mixed it with dirt, but I found an hour and nothing appeared. I am very confused as to what it isIn your opinion, sir, you are very knowledgeable. Please advise me

Thanks for your question. Did you mix the compost with soil, or did you plant the seeds directly in the compost? If you planted the seeds directly in the compost, the electrical conductivity (soluble salt content) may be too high, resulting in an osmotic effect.

Hello, what should I do about this problem, Sir? I planted directly in the compost and I thought that the seeds would grow. I wanted to make sure of the quality of the compost for germination, and now what should I do so that the compost is a good environment, because I want the seeds to grow. Please advise me

The compost may be very good even if the electrical conductivity is high - I would recommend blending the compost with soil - try 1 part compost to 3 parts soil, then see how the seeds germinate!@@sofisofiver2801
