You don't want to pay but want to include 4 TB of storage. An SSD of that capacity is around $200. How much do you think should be invested in the mainboard? Another $200? Wait a decade for prices to match your budget.

They could potentially recreate it if they released their next gen a full year before Sony again, and had some seriously good games to back it up. But that’s the real issue, AAA developers just don’t make decent games anymore.

Absolutely agree I am a massive PS fan but my best gaming memories were in the 360 peak Xbox live days on games like Halo 2 ❤ damn I miss those days it was incredible it’s so sad to see where gaming has went with battle pass games and micro transactions and half assed games and terrible “AAA” games

They released the Normal & Pro version from the get go, how's that not obvious? You also need to add the fact that whenever there's a new generation console out, not everyone jumps on the bandwagon immediately. Older generation consoles are still being manufactured and still stick around for a few years after. So it'll make sense in the long run being able to manufacture the console more cheaply.
correct and games are still made for them lol call of duty was still making games on the 360 and p23 when the ps4 and xbox one was out and even during the ps3 era the ps2 was still getting games but a lot of crap ports of games lol but it seems they will make them for like 2 years and then will stop making them
Have you seen the DF breakdowns and how massive of an upgrade the PS5pro is? If I can sell my ps5 for around $400 and get the upgrade for around $300 I'd say its absolutely worth it. Look at the price of gpus, performance is not cheap
The Xbox upgrade isn't really meant for owners of a series to upgrade. It's essentially a more cost effective model in terms of the series X and a proper upgrade of storage on the series S. People who have a series s, should buy storage and series X owners are fine where they are at
It’s totally worth the upgrade if you want a substantial gain in performance without building a more expensive pc, and being in the comfort of your living room playing on a 65”+ OLED tv.

I could be wrong but to sale your ps5 $400 knowing people that don’t have a PlayStation 5 why would anyone buy a used one knowing the Pro as you’d said offers more? If you want a second ps5 one for home and one to travel with I guess that’ll make sense but to trade up and still having to buy the disc drive and more memory which you’re definitely going to need with the digital downloads I mean it’s your money but there’s no games I’m playing multiplayer on on the PS5.

I’m kinda surprised Austin was playing a PS3 without an SSD. It’s a $30 upgrade that takes 5 minutes (plus OS reinstall) and would clearly make a difference.
I have to agree with Matt. There is no point in the redesign unless you feel the need to have the newest thing. It doesn't have any noticeable difference. It was pointless on the part of Microsoft. The investment in the redesign should have been used to hurry along the progress of the next Gen console and get it to market ASAP. Full disclosure: I'm still running a 2013 Xbox One as I haven't seen the need to upgrade yet. Once the next gen releases I will buy one though. Obviously I'm not a big time gamer. More so someone who believes in practicality. I'm also someone who has never owned a Playstation.
From their PoV it makes perfect sense. The cooler, board, and SoC are all cheaper to manufacture and it even comes with a slight upside to the customer of slightly lower power consumption. Meanwhile, Microsoft gets to save $10 or however much it is on each console sold. Might not sound like much for just one but once you multiply that by the 10 million units if not more that they'd sell in the next 2-3 years that is now $100 Million dollars they have saved which is quite substantial.
You know what`s funny - I think that MS will actually launch this sort of a half next gen console in late 2026, but it will not have any new games on it, they`ll just slightly enhance these existing Xbox One games and keep on chugging until something newer is ready, because these new new games that everyone is waiting are still 5-6 years away, like new Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Diablo`s etc.
I mean a 2tb series x wouldn't be that difficult if they didn't make it proprietary storage. They went backwards, the 360 required a mod, the one was just difficult, and the series is impossible.
1000% agree. I have both consoles but I really enjoy being able to upgrade my PS5 drive with a 2TB add on for $90 (back when Ssd was cheaper) I am a big Xbox fan but this move to proprietary storage is up in the top mistakes Xbox has made.
One of the things that made me go PC was my Xbox Ones HDD died and they basically made it non replaceable through software. Corruped after an update, and apparently is a common issue. After hours of trying to fix it, I watched videos, and like 4 months later I built my first PC. Worth it, never going back to modern consoles. Xbox is still a broken brick due to needing custom firmware that did not want to take even after formatting correctly.

@@Tagiau It is an OG Xbox One, after an update it constantly needed to be factory reset every time you turned on the console. Games would be there, but you would have to go through the process each time. It was annoying enough I tried to fix it myself with a new drive and partitioning it. But the update files Microsoft provided didn't take. So it works in a way, but it take so long to turn on I decided to just build a PC. No update or reset fixed the issue.

I don’t know about Xbox. Xbox ripped me off a lot. And this time my Xbox series X I didn’t have for 3 years. The internet chip is going out. Now I have to manually fix it everytime I turn it on so I can even get an internet connection. My disktray on it is broken for about a year now.
Xbox’s next console will be a decently powerful handheld, think like Steamdeck 1.5 with a switch like dock. The dock will have an eGPU though allowing 4K play of the same games.

It would be excusable ditching the disk drive, but I quote this from the Xbox website. "Game discs, movie discs, and external USB disc drives are not supported" (for series X/S). What in the actual backwards logic is that? It has a USB port, the only reason they do this is to try to protect their device... Which is YOUR device. You own it lol.

You can’t say they spent money on the redesign, because in reality, their developers are working all year anyway. It’s not like they’re hiring a new development team to redesign these things. So, in reality, they didn’t waste any more money than they were already spending.
The problem with an all digital consoles is that the ssds with fail and it can happen randomly and out of nowhere and there is a possibility of the console being bricked due to a software update. At least with the disc, the disc can always be used as a backup when the ssd fails. Optical discs can last between 20 to 50 years as long as the discs are stored properly, there is a no subscription service when it comes to physical discs and the discs can be backed up with the proper software. I buy consoles that support media because I keep the same console for the long term and not temporary like when a new console comes out. I collect consoles as a hobby. I have so many game consoles and I'm adding more to my collection and the same thing applies to games since I buy more used games than new games.
With consoles, I'm constantly erasing data and writing data since the stock capacity is too small just to make room to play games. Hardware failure like ssds and hard drives both can fail at any time and are known for failing since it depends on the circumstances especially when there is no backup being done. It's why I still buy blank discs since I still use an optical disc drive with old firmware to rip my 4k, blu ray and dvd discs as well as music cds and hi res audio sacd's. I store my movies and music in multiple micro sd cards and play them when I'm traveling when there is no wifi connection and no cell phone service. For ripping my entire 4k, blu ray and dvd collection, I only use the uncompressed iso video format since it's an exact bit perfect duplicate copy of the entire disc including all languages, extra menus, deleted scenes and all the audio including surround sound and thx audio from my dvds that contain the thx audio fidelity like the original george lucas star wars movies. These things that I have mentioned, I still do them on my pc since I'm constantly adding more physical media to my collection. My bookshelf is already full of my physical media and the rest of my physical media for movies, music and video games are in multiple plastic bins.

They did it because the Series consoles aren't just going away in 2 years. We're 4 years into this generation AND THEY'RE STILL MAKING XBOX ONE AND PS4 GAMES! Xbox knows they'll continue selling Series consoles for the next 5-7 years.
With Gamepass and cloud gaming they could support the Xbox Series consoles for years to come . Just because there's a new console coming out doesn't mean that they have to drop Gamepass for the current Xbox as soon as it happens , Gamepass subscriptions is really what matters to Microsoft . They offer it on lowly Amazon Fire sticks , they could continue it on the Series consoles indefinitely .
The only thing any Xbox guy should be mad at is they won't fix this. It's not the system itself, it's the games that "YOU Xbox guys won't buy or play. You get mad at Sony when you know MS has all those IP setting not being use, they have enough studio's to not even need any third-party games. When your market cap is 3 trillion dollars, you can fix this.
This has probably been ready for a couple years, but given the poor sales performance, they've been trying to just get rid of over stocked parts for the original design.
The fact that they have been sending out surveys to devs regarding why they are not comfortable developing for xbox says everything. At this point even if they had released an upgraded console with the same price to match ps 5 pro it still wouldn’t sell well. Because there are no exclusives. Even the common big releases are often delayed because of series s. Next generation needs to kill of series s. At this point I would rather they just go into prebuilts
Don’t forget they aren’t fighting in the console wars anymore so they are going to start following their own cadence on release. Xbox is more focused on Game Pass and having their games available on any device. I wouldn’t be surprised if Series X ends up being around as long as if not longer than the first gen Switch eventually becoming the budget option once a more powerful console arrives kinda like how previous gen iPhones stay available but drop in price. Streaming and AI are going to be a huge part of how XBox works in the future allowing older gen consoles to still be able to play XBox games for years to come and still look good.
The general population isn't going to know the difference of the processor. This is just to add extra options to the market. However, gamers may raise their eyebrows at the lack of a 'pro' version since Sony is doing it. It would be a perfect opportunity to swoop in with a more powerful Xbox and undercut the PS5 Pro by having a more reasonable price.

I went to Rose City Comic Con recently and most of the games I bought were Xbox 360 that I never played. Backward compatibility is what matters to me. this pushes me to consider Desktop gaming. As logically the slight improvement of X Series X hardware. Doesn’t justify a Terabyte increase. When sorting to an external isn’t unreasonable. Both have the same issue: future size of games. Along with the “pairing issue” of the drive & console. Which doesn’t occur with desktop, if formatted properly. A drive could operate with MacOS & Windows. I’m not familiar with LinuxOS. Still, placing that amount of funds toward desktop hardware would surpass PlayStation Pro performance.

Feels silly watching two guys argue over a console, while using a custom PC with a Blu-Ray Drive for GOG/Steam backups and 8TB of storage space. Lul. Expensive, but it lasts you way longer then a console would. Not to mention the games actually go on sale.
Xbox almost did really great this generation. If the Series S didn't exist, and it was just Series X, I feel like they could have been more successful in attracting developers. Not sure why the Series S even exists--seems like something that the Marketing Department cooked up--the kiddie box meant to constrain the regular Series X and hold it back. Whoever came up with Series S should be fired and put out onto the cold Seattle streets.
I'm selling my Series X to just focus on PC gaming, the brand has lost it's luster and I can recognize that. Plus I am willing to wait for certain PS games to come to PC.
Well considering I’m positive I have a hardware issue with my Series X that is out of warranty, I ordered the new 2tb version. I do agree it’s far too expensive but given how much it gets used and that I have the means, I can justify it. I’m pretty sure there were some QC issues during the pandemic that affected quite a few (but not enough to recall) consoles leading to overheating issues. Unfortunately, these issues are only really brought on by certain games (Starfield is a big one).

The S is a great idea in theory but in execution I'm not so sure its lived up to its unrealistic expectations that Microsoft set for it. Next gen Xbox releases and todays Series X becomes tomorrows Series S which justifies the redesign. I would be interesting if that becomes the new norm if they continue to make consoles.

I'll stick with my PC with 12TB of storage, and 150fps+ XBOX has always been trash, never the console of choice in my schools or friend groups, was always PlayStation. Consoles were amazing and totally worth it back in the day, now with the technology and amount of competition they're very boring. Hell I can even connect my Meta Quest to my PC for further graphical power, consoles are just limited computers that are overpriced. The fact Microsoft kept the price the same on the X, while making it cheaper for them to manufacture is a dick move. I'm surprised they lowered the price on the S but makes sense since they didn't redesign the mobo or use the newer chip. Doesn't matter what you choose the consumer gets screwed.
This whole premise is dumb. Neither Sony nor Microsoft ever advertised a refresh to their consoles because it's literally just a way for them to save money and doesn't effect the performance at all. So by saying "Well Sony did this two years ago" is irrelevant. I'm sure Microsoft did too somewhere and you never noticed it

Honestly without the Xbox Live servers being on, the Disk Drive in the Xbox is essentially useless. Blu Ray is an app that is downloaded from the MS store Physical games are A) licenses to play B) have no game data C) require day 1 updates. Without Xbox Live being on, you’re cooked. With or without a disk drive. Not to mention PCs are completely digital and have been since basically the 360 days.
Xbox doesn't necessarily need to focus on next gen at this point, they need to decide what their strategy is because new hardware won't turn things around for them.. Lately, it's all been about game pass, and every screen is an Xbox, and "no console required" and all. If that's what they want then they need to optimize PC ports and put more games on Nintendo and PlayStation. If they want to win the console war, they need to make better first-party games.

I think they were going to redesign a full series x pro but a year ago decided to scrap that and just add these minor upgrades in a standard shell then they are all in on the new Xbox and not wasting an extra 2+ years been outsold by Sony
This whole generation has been a mess, in all honesty. With the supply not meeting the demand and now that there are tons of these consoles, out in the market, there is just absolutely no need to trade in your PS4/Xbox one and “upgrade” Again, 50% of PlayStation’s player base is still on a PS4, not sure about Xbox, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s somewhat the same for them. Like, we’re damn near 5 years into these consoles and we’re still just not seeing any benefits to get these consoles, you are not getting any better performance, quick resume is valid, I guess, but other than that, you’re still locked on 30fps (which is fine) The games coming out for it aren’t interesting, at all, unless you’re an indie nerd or have the disposable income to sign up for a monthly subscription to play thousands of games. Like, it is not hitting as great as it used to, there is no longer that excitement of getting the new console.
Not true that every console since PSX got smaller version during the generation. N64 wasn't one, Gamecube (but it was small from beginning), Xbox OG, etc.
And its sad cause the Series X is knee capped by requiring parody with the Series S. The SX is actually slightly more powerfull than the ps5 in hardware specs

Xbox already announced that their new generation starts in 2026 with the console being shown to the public this December.

You also need to add the fact that whenever there's a new generation console out, not everyone jumps on the bandwagon immediately. Older generation consoles are still being manufactured and still stick around for a few years after. So it'll make sense in the long run being able to manufacture the console more cheaply.

The Xbox upgrade isn't really meant for owners of a series to upgrade. It's essentially a more cost effective model in terms of the series X and a proper upgrade of storage on the series S. People who have a series s, should buy storage and series X owners are fine where they are at

I have to agree with Matt. There is no point in the redesign unless you feel the need to have the newest thing. It doesn't have any noticeable difference. It was pointless on the part of Microsoft. The investment in the redesign should have been used to hurry along the progress of the next Gen console and get it to market ASAP.
Full disclosure: I'm still running a 2013 Xbox One as I haven't seen the need to upgrade yet. Once the next gen releases I will buy one though. Obviously I'm not a big time gamer. More so someone who believes in practicality. I'm also someone who has never owned a Playstation.

From their PoV it makes perfect sense. The cooler, board, and SoC are all cheaper to manufacture and it even comes with a slight upside to the customer of slightly lower power consumption. Meanwhile, Microsoft gets to save $10 or however much it is on each console sold. Might not sound like much for just one but once you multiply that by the 10 million units if not more that they'd sell in the next 2-3 years that is now $100 Million dollars they have saved which is quite substantial.
You know what`s funny - I think that MS will actually launch this sort of a half next gen console in late 2026, but it will not have any new games on it, they`ll just slightly enhance these existing Xbox One games and keep on chugging until something newer is ready, because these new new games that everyone is waiting are still 5-6 years away, like new Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Diablo`s etc.
I mean a 2tb series x wouldn't be that difficult if they didn't make it proprietary storage. They went backwards, the 360 required a mod, the one was just difficult, and the series is impossible.
1000% agree. I have both consoles but I really enjoy being able to upgrade my PS5 drive with a 2TB add on for $90 (back when Ssd was cheaper) I am a big Xbox fan but this move to proprietary storage is up in the top mistakes Xbox has made.

One of the things that made me go PC was my Xbox Ones HDD died and they basically made it non replaceable through software. Corruped after an update, and apparently is a common issue. After hours of trying to fix it, I watched videos, and like 4 months later I built my first PC. Worth it, never going back to modern consoles. Xbox is still a broken brick due to needing custom firmware that did not want to take even after formatting correctly.

@@Tagiau It is an OG Xbox One, after an update it constantly needed to be factory reset every time you turned on the console. Games would be there, but you would have to go through the process each time. It was annoying enough I tried to fix it myself with a new drive and partitioning it. But the update files Microsoft provided didn't take. So it works in a way, but it take so long to turn on I decided to just build a PC. No update or reset fixed the issue.

I don’t know about Xbox. Xbox ripped me off a lot. And this time my Xbox series X I didn’t have for 3 years. The internet chip is going out. Now I have to manually fix it everytime I turn it on so I can even get an internet connection. My disktray on it is broken for about a year now.

The problem with an all digital consoles is that the ssds with fail and it can happen randomly and out of nowhere and there is a possibility of the console being bricked due to a software update. At least with the disc, the disc can always be used as a backup when the ssd fails. Optical discs can last between 20 to 50 years as long as the discs are stored properly, there is a no subscription service when it comes to physical discs and the discs can be backed up with the proper software. I buy consoles that support media because I keep the same console for the long term and not temporary like when a new console comes out. I collect consoles as a hobby. I have so many game consoles and I'm adding more to my collection and the same thing applies to games since I buy more used games than new games.
SSDs fail after years in PCs that continuously write to disk, the continuous writing to disk is less of an issue on things like game consoles
With consoles, I'm constantly erasing data and writing data since the stock capacity is too small just to make room to play games. Hardware failure like ssds and hard drives both can fail at any time and are known for failing since it depends on the circumstances especially when there is no backup being done. It's why I still buy blank discs since I still use an optical disc drive with old firmware to rip my 4k, blu ray and dvd discs as well as music cds and hi res audio sacd's. I store my movies and music in multiple micro sd cards and play them when I'm traveling when there is no wifi connection and no cell phone service. For ripping my entire 4k, blu ray and dvd collection, I only use the uncompressed iso video format since it's an exact bit perfect duplicate copy of the entire disc including all languages, extra menus, deleted scenes and all the audio including surround sound and thx audio from my dvds that contain the thx audio fidelity like the original george lucas star wars movies. These things that I have mentioned, I still do them on my pc since I'm constantly adding more physical media to my collection. My bookshelf is already full of my physical media and the rest of my physical media for movies, music and video games are in multiple plastic bins.

This has probably been ready for a couple years, but given the poor sales performance, they've been trying to just get rid of over stocked parts for the original design.
The fact that they have been sending out surveys to devs regarding why they are not comfortable developing for xbox says everything. At this point even if they had released an upgraded console with the same price to match ps 5 pro it still wouldn’t sell well. Because there are no exclusives. Even the common big releases are often delayed because of series s. Next generation needs to kill of series s.

Don’t forget they aren’t fighting in the console wars anymore so they are going to start following their own cadence on release. Xbox is more focused on Game Pass and having their games available on any device. I wouldn’t be surprised if Series X ends up being around as long as if not longer than the first gen Switch eventually becoming the budget option once a more powerful console arrives kinda like how previous gen iPhones stay available but drop in price. Streaming and AI are going to be a huge part of how XBox works in the future allowing older gen consoles to still be able to play XBox games for years to come and still look good.
The general population isn't going to know the difference of the processor. This is just to add extra options to the market.

this pushes me to consider Desktop gaming. As logically the slight improvement of X Series X hardware. Doesn’t justify a Terabyte increase. When sorting to an external isn’t unreasonable. Both have the same issue: future size of games. Along with the “pairing issue” of the drive & console. Which doesn’t occur with desktop, if formatted properly. A drive could operate with MacOS & Windows. I’m not familiar with LinuxOS. Still, placing that amount of funds toward desktop hardware would surpass PlayStation Pro performance.
I just hope that Xbox will not end up like Sega with their console division.

Xbox almost did really great this generation. If the Series S didn't exist, and it was just Series X, I feel like they could have been more successful in attracting developers. Not sure why the Series S even exists--seems like something that the Marketing Department cooked up--the kiddie box meant to constrain the regular Series X and hold it back. Whoever came up with Series S should be fired and put out onto the cold Seattle streets.
I'm selling my Series X to just focus on PC gaming, the brand has lost it's luster and I can recognize that. Plus I am willing to wait for certain PS games to come to PC.

Well considering I’m positive I have a hardware issue with my Series X that is out of warranty, I ordered the new 2tb version. I do agree it’s far too expensive but given how much it gets used and that I have the means, I can justify it. I’m pretty sure there were some QC issues during the pandemic that affected quite a few (but not enough to recall) consoles leading to overheating issues. Unfortunately, these issues are only really brought on by certain games (Starfield is a big one).

The S is a great idea in theory but in execution I'm not so sure its lived up to its unrealistic expectations that Microsoft set for it. Next gen Xbox releases and todays Series X becomes tomorrows Series S which justifies the redesign. I would be interesting if that becomes the new norm if they continue to make consoles.

XBOX has always been trash, never the console of choice in my schools or friend groups, was always PlayStation. Consoles were amazing and totally worth it back in the day, now with the technology and amount of competition they're very boring. Hell I can even connect my Meta Quest to my PC for further graphical power, consoles are just limited computers that are overpriced.
The fact Microsoft kept the price the same on the X, while making it cheaper for them to manufacture is a dick move. I'm surprised they lowered the price on the S but makes sense since they didn't redesign the mobo or use the newer chip. Doesn't matter what you choose the consumer gets screwed.

Xbox doesn't necessarily need to focus on next gen at this point, they need to decide what their strategy is because new hardware won't turn things around for them.. Lately, it's all been about game pass, and every screen is an Xbox, and "no console required" and all. If that's what they want then they need to optimize PC ports and put more games on Nintendo and PlayStation. If they want to win the console war, they need to make better first-party games.
