I am Latvian and my parents told me about Stalin's crimes in Ukraine when I was still in elementary school. My father told me that when he was five years old, Stalin died in 1953. and his father and mother wept and danced for joy in the Riga apartment. After that, his father allegedly came over and said that his son should remember that day, because the most terrible murderer in the world had died, and that black shoelaces had been tied to the flags in honor of that murderer. Unfortunately, there are few people in the world who know and understand what crimes Stalin, Lenin, Beria, Kaganovich and the USSR committed. Unfortunately, hardly any country has recognized the Holodomor as genocide, but my country Latvia has officially done so, and we are one of the few countries where denial of the Holodomor is threatened with criminal liability.
Its kinda sad i dont see anyone reviewing this movie on UA-cam. This is the kind of movie everyone should watch at least once. The soviet union/russia was always horrible for Ukraine. This is the truth.
I'm kind of Ukrainian. It's complicated. My mom was completely 3rd generation American. Her paternal grandparents were from Slovakia. Her maternal grandparents were from a small village in Poland kind of near the border with Ukraine called Myczkowce. Due to the 1920s-1930s borders, it would've been in the mid-south of Poland during Holodomor. Anyway, we know that her maternal grandparents were also Ukrainian somehow. Thankfully, all her grandparents had already come over to America before WW1, however they were poor (especially her father's side) so life wasn't easy on the farms in Indiana County, PA. My grandma lost a brother in the Battle of Saipan, Corporal Frank Paul Lucas (the father Americanized the name from Łukasz/Lukasz to Lucas when he came to America). I can't imagine how hard it was for them to lose a son especially since it's possible that on top of that, they could've had anxiety about their own families in Europe. I don't know much about the Polish side of the family (scant records) but I know a relative of my g-grandpa came to visit in like the 1970's or so and I'm told there was a newspaper article about it at Homer City. Anyway, mom and her parents were kind of frugal and despite my grandpa growing up dirt poor, when he died, I guess he left my mom a considerable amount of money (I doubt it was a "we're rich" amount). Sadly, my mom passed when I was 12, so she wasn't able to endow me with frugality as much. On the Slovak side, the family kept in touch with the mother-country family until kind of naturally losing contact in the 2000s decade. However, I've been able to slowly get back in contact with the family over there from my g-grandpa's side. I'm working on my G-grandma's but no luck yet. I'm in touch with some people from her side, but they are descendants of her niece from her older brother and her younger brother that both immigrated. We don't have letters, but we have some pictures. The pictures from socialist Czechoslovakia don't particularly show anything damning, but my relatives don't particularly look happy in them. Granted, that could be for different reasons, maybe cultural ones.
This Film is very important for humanity to know that the great Ukrainian Famine was deliberately engineered by Stalin for political purposes and it should be categorised by historians as an act of genocide. It should also make it clear to humanity that Marxism (in all its many guises; Leninism, Bolshevism, Communism, Maoism; etc) is the most murderous political ideology in history. The far left has killed far more innocent people than the far right or radical religious movements combined. It should also make it clear that Hitler was not in a league of his own in terms of crimes against humanity. Stalin was in every way at least as evil and monstrous a mass murderer, and so was Mao Zhe Dong.
I think, you should just close your mouth and let the historians do their work...... I think they know way more about, how to work, than you ...... And they know much more about Soviet History than the whole comment section here.....
This is a very good film I would recommend. In the early 1930's under the utterly vile Communist dictator Joseph Stalin (one of the biggest mass murderers in human history) the Communist Soviet Union deliberately starved to death between about three and twelve million people, mainly in the Ukraine. I read the book 'Bloodlands' (2010) by Timothy D. Snyder (mainly about Poland and the Ukraine) some years ago and, as that author points out, until at least late 1941/ 1942 Hitler was a mere, small time, amateur in terms of mass killing compared to Stalin. Well worth a watch.
99IronDuke We do paint Hitler as the absolute worst human when there are many just like him or worse even around that time. Was the author comparing amount of deaths between him and Stalin or other measures?

I liked the way The animal farm (one of the greatest books ever written) of George Orwell was used in this movie to give the storyline this extra touch. In communism everyone was meant to be equal but unfortunately the Marx's ideas inspired some of the cruellest regimes in history. Desire for freedom and equality is corrupted by the consolidation of political power and greed. After all “all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others''. Unfortunately, extremism occurs in every ideology regardless if it's left or right. “The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.”

This is absolutely essential filmmaking for our times. I cannot tell you how many young people, especially, I know who have bought into the marxist utopia lie. They mock me, but history will mock us if we do not speak up.
For real! Just look at the BLM. Mr. Jones still looks like a pretty story. Anyone who wants a real story of Ukraininan hunger there is a movie Golod-33 (Голод-33). @ J Scott Upton - I'm not surprized by "The New York Times" attitude: they continue to suppress and hide the crime committed by this newspaper against humanity... What a shame! Durante received even the Pulitzer prize for his concocted reports to cover in the West Stalin's bloody deeds. Such practice of buying foreign journslists' cooperation to cover inner problems was practiced in Russia long before the October communist coup d'Etat. They were called in Russia "variaghians" (vikings). Durante was one of such venal journalists, and "The New York Times,"upon discoveting his unprecedented lies did everything to cover it. To cover not just some bagatelle, but the death and suffering of millions of cuiden, women and men...
You're not Ukrainian at all otherwise you wouldn't be supporting ultra nationalists who kill their own people. Educate yourself clown

This movie is so important. Thank-you.
Getting familiar with Animal Farm is a must. And so it is with this film.
Stalin WAS the biggest mass murderer.
