    I really like this. I have made drawers before. And I’ve done it on custom pieces so I had to come up with all the measurements. This is a great reference. Plus… I found a piece that I bought super cheap and sold at my antique mall booth. But I really liked the size and so many things about it. So I took some quick measurements before the customer took it home. So I’m building it by making my own plans. I’ve got the frame plans worked out. Now I have to do the drawers and doors. This will make it much easier

      I appreciate that! I always wonder when I explain things if it made sense to other people or if it just made sense to me 🤣 so thank you…this is reassuring haha. When I was in college, my engineering professor would always pick at me for double majoring in math. He said if mathematicians had to approach a wall but they could only move half the distance from where they are to the wall at a time, they’d tell you they’d never get there. But eventually an engineer would say “close enough, we are here.” Haha. I feel like I lean more toward the “close enough” philosophy in most things.

    You make tackling drawers not look so intimidating! It would be great in your next video of you could explain how to determine the slide length in a little more detail. Maybe show with a drawing or a model of the inside of a cabinet. I loved how you incorporated the SketchUp drawings into you video - especially with the moving dimensions. Very clever! Looking forward to the sequel!

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  Рік тому +2

      I may put together a short form video about that! Slide length is kind of one of those things where, as long as it fits, it’s fine. It doesn’t have to be specific. In 90% of my projects, I use 16” drawer slides because I buy them in bulk and they fit most applications. Basically you just don’t want to buy a slide that’s too long for your cabinet. So your slide length should be equal to or less than the depth of your cabinet (or dresser or whatever). If you’re doing inset, the drawer front pushes the slide back from the front edge, so in those cases, the slide length plus the thickness of your drawer front should be equal to or less than your cabinet depth. So an 18” cabinet could fit an 18” slide if the drawer fronts were overlay. But it couldn’t if they were inset because the thickness of the front plus the slide length would be greater than the depth of the cabinet. If you were doing inset, you’d need to size down and they come in 2” increments, so the next smallest size would be 16”.

    Thank you for your insight on how to measure for the drawer boxes and drawer faces. I also learned about the difference between inset, partial overlay, and full overlay. I used your ideas to help make a 12 drawer bench seat with frameless inset drawers. Your videos were easy to understand and follow.

    Omg. I just found your channel and I’m so glad. You’re an amazing teacher! This is so well explained! I had to find your Instagram after this. Thank you super star!
    Quick question. Why does the drawer box have to be shorter than the drawer front?

    Great tutorial Shara! You did an excellent job of covering all the major points for figuring out drawer measurements. I don't think I saw Bubby in this video. Hopefully he is out enjoying the warmer weather you're having now!

      Thank you so much! Haha I actually had to edit him out of a few of the other videos on the series. He may make his way into one of them, but he was on his little heat pad in the shop while I was filming this one. It’s turned off chilly again here 😩 Hoping for warm and sunny weather soon! Anyway, I hope you have a wonderful weekend and I really appreciate you watching!

    Great video! I'm looking at several different ideas for adding drawers to a work bench. Not sure if I want to use sliders or just use plywood for the slides. Thought about using up some pieces of T111 for the sides to mount the drawers to.

    Hello Shara. I got the point clear @ 5:15 (even gaps). For inset is the 1/8" @ 2:45 standard or is 1/16" just too tight (although it seems to look so clean)?

    Really love this.
    For full overlay, why do you still have an 1/8” reveal?

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  Рік тому +1

      Thank you! If you’re doing a stand alone piece, I suppose the reveal is optional, but many times, that’s used with cabinets and if you install two cabinets next to each other and the drawer fronts come all the way to the edge, all the fronts would be touching so they’d rub on each other opening and closing. The reveal allows space between so they can open and close freely.

      @@WoodshopDiaries Thank you for that. Totally makes sense! Looking forward to the next part in the series. I had hopes of refacing my cabinets and drawers, but the drawer faces are glued and stapled to the drawers so need to make new drawers.
