That humble man working in the butchery with Kurt-Lee Arendse who asked him to help this young man. ❤❤❤ These are the South African heroes we don’t see who ALL contributed to back-to-back World Cup wins! And the man icing Siya Kolisi’s knee all hours of the night while he slept….. That is the spirit of our country when we come together. xxxx

The Boks are the biggest celebs in South Africa, bigger than TV / movie stars / musicians / etc.
But they also put a lot back into the game. A few weeks ago Ox Nche was at my nieces primary school, all the way in a different province, and not one of his junior schools, just to celebrate the school now offering rugby as a sport.

The language that all those emotive lines is isiXhosa (the Xh is a click that you can learn by watching some videos...). The way they are speaking comes from the praise song culture and is absolutely magnificent. If you listen to it even without subtitles, it gives you chills. Those descriptions at the capping ceremony, and the bit about "son of Libbok" etc. give you an idea of how gorgeous their use of language is. Look up some videos of the isiXhosa commentary for an experience of it.

Every time Makazole opens his mouth, I cry. Every time I see him getting embarrassed for some of the attention he is getting from the public, I cry. Watching him with his injury, knowing he has to leave, I cried. Knowing that the only family he has is the 56 million people who will gladly be his brother / sister / parent / uncle / aunt.. I cry.
And that's just one player. Then you quickly understand through this series, the bond that these players have, the hardship and worries they have, what they have done to get there and how they are going to hang on with every fibre of their bodies, watching Deon dealing with a very sick father or even RG choosing to run the extra distance so Kurt Lee has someone to celebrate with after the Scotland try, Duane's family talking about him, Kurt Lee working in a butchery, Siya going through what he did to get back to fitness....
There are no reasons NOT to cry!

YES. We South Africans are a unique breed. We know how to dig deep, and when the passion is required, we will step up and show the world that despite the absolute F#$% UP government and their failures, we will stand united with dignity.
It is only the rhetoric of a few who seek to divide us. Scratch below the surface, and you will find respect and understanding.

Great moment between ours teams at the end which I think was initiated by Tonga. Tonga played their best game against the Boks and scored the same number of tries as France did against us! NZ & Ire manage 1 try and all the other teams 0 tries

    • @ziyahhavea355
      @ziyahhavea355 5 місяців тому +12

@@orlandosadie6283 yes their best game of the tournament. I cheered for their tries but was low-key wishing they'd score no more in case the Boks don't go through due to points diff lol!...But them praying together was the moment of the game for me and to be honest I was anticipating it even before the game started because I knew the Boks are the only team who prays as a collective with PI teams. I later read an article about it and Grant Williams shared that the Tongan team asked if they could pray for the Boks knowing it was their last pool match before the playoffs, and they actually prayed that the Boks will be successful in all 3 finals - how about that? I was frustated because our local tv broadcast cut to the ads before the actual moment and only got to see the pics of them praying hours later on the internet. Seeing them pray together cemented my belief that the Boks will go back go back. So while the rest of the teams had another game the Boks on their bye-week perfected their pounce for the playoffs and those teams still don't know what hit them.

I've probably watched each episode 3 times, and each time I am crying my eyes out. There are no words that can explain what the Springboks mean to our country. It's far beyond a sport and anything I have ever experienced. They create pure magic. The feeling they bring us is so overwhelming with deep pride and hope. Winning the World Cup in 1995 and experiencing how 1 team, 1 game, 1 competition could literally change the heartbeat of a country was back then life-changing, and still is.
Thank you for covering these episodes, It's awesome to hear your perspective on this and to see how others who are not South African appreciate the Springboks and their journey as much as we all do back home.

Great review, you got my subscription a long time ago… one thing that you pointed out is that you can’t wait to see a schools game when in SA on a previous episode. I think you will be blown away by the sheer depth of Rugby in South Africa and the volume of talent. Traditionally South Africa has been a football country in terms of the greater population. However Rugby has over the last 7 years literally finally become a major sport in Black communities to the extent that whereas in the past you would only see football being played in the townships by kids now you genuinely see kids ( of their own accord) playing rugby. There is no longer any need for quotas in Rugby as there’s such a massive volume of all children playing the game naturally there is no longer a need for quotas. Why you see the Australians and New Zealanders go on about trying to change the rules to make it more like League is simple. They know that they are literally going to be blown away by the sheer volume of of talent. Remember South Africa has a population of 62 million … that’s thought the same size as the UK and France. ( That’s basically double and some of Australia and 10 times that of New Zealand) … There are only 2 codes of football .. Association (soccer) and Rugby Union … Rugby League simply does not has not and never will exist in SA. If as I believe Rugby Union even equals soccer in popularity that means you have 30 million people to choose from …. Compare that to the UK or France where Rugby is minuscule as you point out in comparison to soccer …. It means that no country as it stands will have the sheer depth of talent … The Bomb Squad was not an abnormality it literally shows the depth that South Africa has. To use a soccer analogy countries like Brazil, Argentina, Italy, and Germany only have one version of football in reality … as a result they are the only countries that have won 3 or more World Cups because they have the “production” line of youngsters just being churned out , no matter how many ways you look at it New Zealand with a population of 6 million ( even with the Pacific Islanders) will never ever be able to realistically compete against a population of 60 million in terms of talent over the long run. Ironically the only reason that historically South Africa hasn’t obliterated everyone was because Rugby was restricted to 10% of the population. Now that it has at least 70% of the population supporting it the Antipodeans are desperately trying to change it into the sport they play “League“ but even that will not work. Go back into history on other sports .. in the 50s/60s Australia and New Zealand has the best middle/long distance runners … then East African Countries started being able to compete … game over!

So the supporters that arrived at the stadium for the boks final training session are the "Gwijo squad". Famous group of supporters in SA who sing / chant war cries during games. They arrived on the week of the QF specifically for that game ( Seeing as Boks would've faced NZ or FR and this knockout game was guaranteed for the boks, the SF and FN weren't). Biggest games of the tournament for us. They were pivotal in my view.

Brilliant Review. I think this documentary should have been called "Chasing the Effing Sun" to give it a bit of a throttle.
My theory on SA's loss to IRE us that Rassie wasnt quite as upset as he made it out to be. He reacted the way he did to put keep his players in check. I think Rassie knew that if SA beat IRE and topped the group, they would meet NZ. He felt that NZ were more of a threat than FRA in spite of the hype about FRA being one of the favourites. So Rassie didn't mind, if fact was relieved they would meet FRA and IRE would meet NZ in the quarters. If Rassie really wanted to beat IRE, why did he not select Pollard over Mannie? Rassie is a master of the game in a sick way. Rassie thinks like a CIA agent. His thinking is very complex. While IRE were celebrating beating SA, we were relieved knowing anyone who would face NZ would have a nightmare of a game. Plus SA had a bone to pick with FRA who stole our WC hosting opportunity even though they hosted it as recent as 2007. We were delighted to beat them in their own backyard and deny them the chance to even reach the finals let alone win it. SA were motivated by revenge to destroy FRA and win the WC ultimately.

Hey Tim, can't wait for you to experience why rugby means so.much for.our country..we're by no means perfect and still have a lot of challenges in our country, but rugby you'll see is more than just a sport for our country..its really something else! I'm watching Chasing The Sun 1 & 2 simultaneously, and although I know the outcomes, I still get heavy emotional,as if I'm watching it for the 1st time!

Great content and insight, Tim! 'Xhosa' is pronounced - by those who cant manage the 'txlik' - as koza with a longer "o" as in cauza ... if that makes any sense?

hey Tim believe the commentary was isiXosa pronounced 'caw-sa' (the 'X' is a click with the side of the mouth so just saying 'caw-sa' is close enough) love your review! and yes we do shed a tear when it comes to Chasing the sun :)

I watched episode three twice already. The story telling is so so good. Leaving it on a cliff hanger for the next episode. It's so weird. We all know the outcome and the story but I'm so hooked. And just a caveat. I wish I could dance like Trevor nyakane.
