    I'd love to learn more about how you go about buying large yarn quantities and then finding a pattern like for that emerald yarn at the end. I usually always shop with a pattern in mind, but I'm getting ready to travel to Europe and I'd like to be able to purchase a couple of sweater quantities even if I don't know exactly what the yarn will become. Although I'm an experienced knitter I've only recently gotten into garments so buying in quantity is still a mystery. Thanks for the peaceful content!

    • @marleneknits
      @marleneknits  4 місяці тому

      I also shop with a pattern in mind always, at least for sweater quantities - that pattern might change later on, but that’s how I decide how much yarn to buy! it means that I can only change the pattern to a similar one but usually I love my first idea but might wanna change a small aspect about it & that’s always possible. with the emerald yarn I was constraint by the amount of skeins we had left in stock, so I bought all of them and knew that it couldn’t be a cabled oversized sweater or a dress but rather a bigger gauge or cropped / fairly fitted sweater. so my suggestion / the way in which I plan for yarns travel/festivals and such: I dream up some knits, look at my wishlist, queue and patterns I don’t have yarn for yet - compile a list with yardages/amounts of yarn needed and what kind of yarn I would like for that knit and then when I shop I can go back to that list and will end up with something great in my opinion! hope this helps ☺️

    The first swatch reminds me a bit of a bowl of like lucky charms cereal after most of the cereal is gone and it's been sitting there for a minute. I mean that as a compliment even if it sounds weird haha, it's like a very soothing blend of color flecks and oat

It was so fun seeing your sweater's quantity yarn stash and seeing all the plans you have for it, seems like you're happy and excited with all the project you are going to make in the future and I think that's what really matters🥰 I love your beautiful colourwork sweater btw and after seeing it in the last podcast episode (I think it was) I did cast on my first colourwork sweater too! I've made a blanket with my 200 g of unspun yarn. Best blanket ever❤. I chose to start with 3 stitches, then increase after the first mask in the begining of every round until I had used a little less then half of my yarn, then I decreased the same way😊. First sitch always a knitstich, and I chose a moss-stich pattern (I think it's called that in english, perlestrikk in norwegian). Everyother knit and perl, and then the knit over perl and per over knit the next round. This way I got the same pattern on both sides off the blanket. I knitted with Hillesvåg unspun, this yarn is caked with double strand, so I chose to knit with both starnds with a needle size 6 (european size).
    Thank you so much for great podcasts by the way, very inspiering❤

    • @marleneknits
      @marleneknits  5 місяців тому

      that sounds lovely! Although I‘m thinking my plates are only single so I would hold them double and that would make for more like a baby blanket? :)

  • @ursulas9369

    I very much enjoy watching knitters show their garment quantities and talk about potential plans! My many comments to some of your plans/yarns 😁:
    -Kerr sweater: I think having the main colour be the beautiful brown and the contrast colour work the light would look great
    -Doppio sweater: love your swatch! I am just finishing my first Doppio and have a feeling there will be a bunch more! I used two strands of Knitpicks Palette (which in my opinion is an amazing, very affordable yarn) in two heathered colours (so much depth in the yarn!) in two tones that don't have a drastic contrast but enough plus a complimentary mohair. The result is stunning! there are so many options! And I think the fit of the sweater will be great although mine is not blocked yet
    -made a weekend v-neck slipover in Cascade 220 jet (plus FKO mohair in midnight) and the fabric is very nice and the super dark charcoal is beautiful. My friend knit the Amy slipover in the same yarn (jet as well) without mohair and her gauge was tighter and the fabric turned out a little stiff (not sure if she knit to pattern gauge or not).
    Lastly the unspun - I knit the Lento in one strand of Nutiden plus a mohair on 5.5 mm needles. Not sure how yardage of the thrive compares to nutiden but I used about 85g of KFO mohair for the sweater and roughly 175 g of nutiden. I knit a size 2. The sweater turned out nicely oversized but not ginourmous on my 87cm bust. My version is not long but also not cropped (I am 165cm)
    If you were to use a lace alpaca that is more fluffy you could probably go up in needle size and stretch the yardage. I absolutely love this sweater. It is so incredibly light and warm but not too warm because it is still airy. The mohair dramatically reduces pilling and makes knitting with one strand unspun at lot easier.

      @marleneknits  5 місяців тому +1

      wow thank you so much for your many insights! :) your sooooo sound lovely and I would like to try out knitpicks palette some day in the future as well!
      a lento is always a good idea for just 200gr of yarn I remember, so maybe! I will be holding it with a mohair of course :)

    All of these yarns are so lovely! I really enjoyed hearing your plans for which sweaters they will become. This annual planning mentality is one I totally align with; for a fellow planner like myself, it's the perfect way to keep up the knitting motivation while appreciating your current project - and eagerly anticipating upcoming projects ;)
    I'm also interested in knitting up the Amy Slipover in a worsted weight yarn! Would love to hear any tips and tricks for adapting this pattern to a different gauge.

    This was such a nice video! It gave me so much motivation no reorganise my own stash. Defenitly gonna make a baby stash. (Although I don't have any kids yet, I hope that I will have them in the furture and make so many knits for them!).
    Here are my long answers to your questions😉
    I think the Kerr sweater would be nice with the dark color al the main color, especially because it will be very different from the sweater you're wearing right now.
    I'm planning on starting the Eclair sweater from Laura Penrose soon, but I also love the look of the Artic Light sweater from Kutovakika, that one has so many gorgeous cables!
    Also I highly recommend knitting a dress! I'm wearing my only knitted dress right now and I live in it! It is so great (but I'm someone who prefers dresses and skirts over pants, so keep that in mind). I'm brainstorming so hard on what dresses I want to make or wich sweaters would look great as a dress.

    Cabled sweater - Purpurea by Teti Lutsak. There is a sample in my LYS and it looks amazing on everyone who tries it. The Amy Slipover - I lengthened it by 5 cm to get it to be how it looks on the model in the book. What I didn't think about and should have, is that I should have had the ties end up lower by picking up more stitches, too, not just the length of the garment part. The ties ended up higher than my waist and they look a little bit silly. Something to keep in mind if you need to lengthen it. I'll be giving mine away and maybe making another. Maybe. Those ribbed ties were quite the slog.

    Hi Marlene! How do you determine what a "sweater quantity" is for you? Do you have good bench-mark patterns you use to measure this?

    • @marleneknits
      @marleneknits  5 місяців тому

      Hey Julie-Anne, so I usually buy yarn for particular patterns which means I’ll buy the amount of yarn the pattern asks for my size - if I’m in between patterns I’ll get enough so it’ll fit any of them, I also now know that 300gr of fingering plus the equivalent meterage of mohair is enough for a sweater as well as around 500-600gr of DK on its own, but at the end of the day I always look at the meterage of the pattern I’m thinking about making- if I’m changing my mind later on I’ll just have to pick a pattern with a similar meterage requirement :) hope this helps!
