One thing I’ve found with the Oslo Hat is that for the structure holding 2 strands of fingering works the best, otherwise it’s way too floppy or you have to knit it with 2 sizes smaller needles than recommended!
I vote for musselburgh hat. I have knitted at least 6. As for your sweater. Put it on cords or waste yarn and block it. That will tell you how the neckline will fit.
for the hat saga... i've made the purl soho soft & cushy hat literally like a dozen times to gift to friends, but each and every time i misread k1tbl as through back loop instead of through bottom loop. it turned out so consistently well like that though, i highly recommend! i usually make it with malabrigo rios which has a super generous amount so you can make a really long brim to fold over.
Last year was my "find the right hat" year. I've been knitting for a long time but could never knit a hat that fit properly. My lessons: don't make it too small. Do not use superwash(it's too smooth and clingy as you observed), make sure the gauge is tight (especially for ribbed hats). In terms of yarn.. You want something plied and springy so it can retain shape.. Although I have a wollen spun Oslo hat that is keeping its shape well.. But that's because the gauge is bullet proof. Good luck! Oh... And I got the Marla yarn recently too.. Knit a 2x2 ribbed headband with the yarn held double.
Hey! For the hat-problem I would suggest the musselburgh pattern by Ysolda! I had the same problem with the Oslo and since them I'm only knitting the musselburgh. It firm's up and keeps its shape due to being completely double folded, it's nice and warm and you can make it with pretty much any weight of yarn! 🥰

I think both of these gave a thicker, more structural fabric than the fingering + mohair combo or sport weight alone. Might be worth a try!
I can't remember if you've already made a Tolsta but HIGHLY recommend! I am making one in KFO cotton merino and I've made 2 or 3 in Truboo which I actually really love and I live in South Carolina where it is HOT and humid and I can wear Truboo tank tops in July. Plus it's DK so it knits up quick even though it's good for hot weather. Just make your neck hole much smaller if you use Truboo.. I did not. It's very off shoulder, my bad for not swatching 😂
I just blocked my Lumme this morning I'm so excited to wear it! All of my puckering blocked out no issue and I used some vinegar in cold water to prevent bleeding and that worked really well, I was nervous cause I used a wine color as my main
For your sweatshirt sweater and fit I suggest the Anyday Sweatshirt by Ysolda Teague. She gives so many options for fit. I also really like my musselbrough hat. I used Madeline Tosh fingering and knitting for olive mohair and the fabric is so toasty, the fit is perfect and I find the lengths suggested in the pattern for the size medium really good for not folding the brim. If I fold the brim I feel like I need another inch or so. And lastly.... yay for the English knitters who throw! How I learned and how I'm happy to continue on for the rest of my life. My non dominant hand is useless.
I just knit my first tee--Dingley Dell by Isabell Kraemer. It has a really fun construction (e.g. set in sleeves) and is so comfy and I think can be worn year-round in our mild DC climate 🙂
i did a couple steam blocks at various parts of the lumme yoke and it increased my confidence that everything would smooth out and block out ! it’s my first colorwork jumper as well. i was also too lazy to do colorwork sleeves lol. kinda worried that the yoke is so deep that when i lift my arms i’d flash my stomach to everyone. we’ll see bc i used super wash (drops karisma) so perhaps it’ll grow longer. i also did the short rows to lengthen the back. finishing up the italian bind off of the sleeves then im gonna block !!❤
Hi! Your colourwork sweater looks absolutely fabulous❤!! I'm also making my very first colourwork sweater and I agree with you, I was waaay more intimidated by it than what was necessary😅 With little more time and some attention, it's 100%doable (and actually not that difficult!!😂)

I think the construction is similar to the Oslo but being made to measure and possible to knit with any gauge I had more confidence it would fit me and it does 😊 I did the tall version and just made it a bit less "tall" by modifying the length before the decreases to match other beanies I own
I am knitting the Lumme too and the standing collar is, well, different. It seems to stay away from my neck, which is critical, so I am rolling with it for now. I did fold mine. Will see how it all blocks and feels. Like you, my focus this year is on making garments that fit and that I wear. This pertains to new knits and to going back to some of my 2022 and 2023 sweaters to make modifications that I think will get them in circulation. Fingers crossed that we are both successful with this goal. On another note, if your Lumme turns out to be too warm for most days in DC, don't forget to come up here to the Northeast, where we provide plenty of freezing cold temps and windy days to make it feel like an absolutely critical part of your wardrobe. As to any puckering, I couldn't see it on film, so I feel safe in saying, that shit will block right out. Good luck with grad school and keeping up your knitting during that adventure!
I also struggle with hats (and have an Oslo hat that I hate). Mostly because I guess my head is super small and every hat seems to come out too big despite matching gauge. I have found ribbed hats to be much more forgiving in fit! The best hat I have made tbh is the free purl soho classic ribbed hat pattern.
Hmmm, you may push me to make a color work sweater ( i made mittens for xmas for someone else and it was a lot as I knit way too tight, so I had to frog them a few times), but your lumme looks really good. since you pushed me to make my first lace project you may do it again for colorwork!
weird question over here, did you get to block your oslo hat? I just finished a project with manos del uruguay superwash and when I blocked it, it smelled so bad when it was all dry up it went away. But I am just curious if the smell was caused by the yarn or a stinky dye?

If you need to read a lot - there are apps that read books etc out loud so you can knit while listening. I like that a lot.

I've knit several Oslo hats with varying yarn types and I enjoy the ones knit it two strands of Sunday by Sandnes Garn or a strand of Double Sunday!

Im not quite sure if it would be harder, both seem to be mostly moss stitch and cables! This one would definitely take longer though!

I did not block it yet but it definitely has a.....woolly odor
