- Join us aboard the Bluewater 50 catamaran, “Zao”, for an offshore passage across the Atlantic! We and a crew of sailing writers and videographers move aboard this luxurious catamaran in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, in the Canary Islands and begin a 3,000-mile transatlantic crossing to the Caribbean. In this episode, we prepare the boat in Las Palmas, then set sail on a magical voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. It is our 8th crossing but the first one that we’ve ever done on a multi-hull. Follow this series to see what crossing an ocean is like aboard a catamaran.

Sweeeeeeet...looking forward to the next one! THANKS!
Fantastic video! Looking forward to part 2.
I have been waiting a long time for this video, cannot wait to see how you feel about the catamaran and it's performance. Have a great trip.
beautiful boat, but sailing it directly down wind like that is far from optimum, goose winging a nice cat is almost criminal.
Thank you for the video. Merry Christmas!
Awesome! We, too, have been waiting for this video!!
Paul & Sheryl , great to see you back on the water (and on UA-cam !) Safe travels and happy new year.
Discovery yards are so wonderful! This boat looks great in nearly all parts. Congratulations for having one!
Fair winds and merry Christmas!
Excellent as always
A real luxury cruise... loved the night shots of Orion's belt.
Great video, thanks for sharing! Definitely looking forward to the rest of your crossing! :-)
We love your videos! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for coming along on the journey Kathleen :-)
What a nice catamaran.❤❤❤
Love your videos! Thank you!
Did I hear some french Canadian woman going « ben voyons », so funny I wasn’t expecting it!
Good to see you again thanks, bit scared when you were working on the hatch!
That is luxury... nice job! Merry Christmas!
always lovely.
Lovely boat and lovely sail!
Welcome back guys we miss you and your videos!
You made a very luxurious crossing this time and it's seems that also weather helps you.
Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas to you as well!!
Wow, what a beautiful boat and great video!!! :-) I enjoyed it, thanks for sharing! :-)
Enjoyed the video guys. Getting so excited already about the crossing next year!!!!
Its going to be a great passage Darryl! We're excited too :-)
Wow can't believe I missed this. Well shot and nicely executed as always.
Dang. That was some good cooking. So much for my diet. I am headed for the frig. LOL Very good video. :-)
I great informative video. Well done!!
I'm anticipating part II.
another great episode guys, it must have been neat to be travelling at those speeds on a level floor compared to some of your other Atlantic crossings on a monohull. Cheers and Happy New Year from PEI, Bryan.
Wow... far from "roughing it." This is a great vid. Good work.
Thanks Chris! Glad you liked it.
So nice brand new everything...wow the food great video , S/V Teak Key
Hooray! Thank you! Been looking forward to view your Atlantic Crossing! Beautiful Cat! Merry Christmas 🌟 🎄🌟
Merry Christmas Jen!
+Distant Shores TV how did you repair the chip on the bow?
Yes I put a layer over gelcoat on it to seal it until someone could do a better job and fair it in. tricky since it was so close to the waterline.
@6:32 The water maker is making about 34 ounces of water a minute (or about 1 gallon ever 3mins 45seconds).
Neat to see this video from cold Barrie, Ontario. I looked at your progress on the GPS tracker each morning which showed steady progress.
Happy New Years!
Big fan... great episode... still no boat... Hope to build my own sailing dory this year..
We’ve been waiting for this video. Excellent. 👍
Glad you liked it Sailing Pau Hana!! The next two parts of the trip are coming next week :-)
Distant Shores TV we can’t wait to see them. You’re our favorites. ❤️ been watching since Two Step.
Thanks for watching guys! Two-Step was a while ago now :-)
Excellent video
Neato on so many counts, thanks. Lovely first mate where do I get one? Ha, just kidding, I've got one similar. What an elegant thing to tow the 5 mic filter behind the boat to clean it
That is one beautiful boat
You’re all very lucky just a little bit jealous
Rad 🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🏆
I have a plan on getting a catamaran I first thought monohaul but switched my mind I was discouraged a bit when i could not find proper info about if a catamaran could sail across the Atlantic so thank you.
Discovery makes quality vessels and so I was surprised by the lack of workmanship on those escape hatch locking handles. Hopefully the company will instruct the employees on their proper installation procedure. Those Cats are nice but I'd be quite satisfied , make that happy with Discovery's new Southerly 48 or the 54 :).
You guys are eating like royalty. Pass the Grey Poupon si vous plaint.
The long wait is over! Great video/editing. Thanks for sharing. Have a Merry Christmas 🎄🎄🎄😊⛵⛵⛵😍👍👍👍👍
Chief on board, really got it rough, what happened to hotdogs and beens?
Will the second video include a boat review?
Hi. great video.
Why did you change from a catamaran to a monohull?
Great video thank you for sharing.
Did you fix the chip on the starboard hull?
What to you have in the produce wash, Just water?
Thanks for your kind words. Yes Paul patched the gel coat chip which was tricky since it was right near the water line. Yes this time I used just water. In the past I have used a mild bleach wash - a capful or 2 of bleach to a bucket of water but Alexandra and I bought most of the produce for this voyage in large modern grocery stores so felt it had already been treated. In a third world country or if we had bought stuff in an open market I would definitely use a chemical wash of some kind.
Awesome video guys, you may have talked about this already in the past, but would you consider going with a cat? Looking forward to your next video and hopefully a boat tour!
Thanks
Hey guys
Been a while. Looks like you did okay on your crossing, at least in this episode.
The galley was turning out some good looking food too.
Good luck,
Keith Robinson
Thanks Keith! Yes we had a great galley crew aboard for sure!
Cruising off Duty video of the Trip is far better!
Thx Paul, may I ask what have been your experiences with the inmast furling in terms of performance, (short-hand) ease of handling, reliability in function
So far our main experience has been this crossing. So... 3000 miles downwind and on the beam. After the first learning experience we had no trouble with this Selden system. We will definitely report back on the new boat (which IS having the same Selden In-Mast system)
@8:08 Hey Paul, what is he making? It looks delicious.
Every time the camera turns there is more people showing up on the boat lol. Looks like you guys having a great time.
Yes, we enjoy having people on board and really enjoyed running our Sail Away Weeks pre-COVID19, which were sail training opportunities, basically onboard versions of our boat show workshops. Unfortunately with COVID19 restrictions we are not going to be offering these, at least not in the near future.
Great to watch the voyage begin.
What caused the chip on the bow?
We’re not sure, John. We noticed it when we arrived from the airport. Some sort of floating debris must have hit the bow at sea when the first crew sailed the boat down from England. It was right at the waterline which made it hard for Paul to patch since there was some surge and lots of wakes in the harbour.
When you did the maintenance on the water-maker did you really wait until after you set off on the big sail before giving it a first test run? Whenever i went for a long sail i always did a stem to stern check that the boat is up for it, finding that loose porthole latch after you set sail kind of left me scratching my head.
We did our best with the new boat going over as much as we could before setting off. We knew we would need to change the pre-filter on the watermaker while underway since we would be using it 2 hours a day for up to 3 weeks. I do not like to run a watermaker in harbour even to test since harbour water is not good for them. A remarkably small number of things went wrong considering she was a new boat.
Lot's of Q's. Should I save all these for a live chat? 1) How did you nick the bow and how was it repaired? 2) Boat walkthrough planned for future video? 3) Will Discovery being showing a BW 50 at the Miami show in February or the Annapolis show in October? 4) Besides the windlass, chain locker, anchor(s), what's in the big nose of the nacelle? 5) Is Dan available as a chef for hire on crewed charters?
We might do a live chat... good idea! 1) the delivery crew must have hit a floating object on the way from UK - I repaired it with matched gelcoat as a temporary fix. 2) Yes just working on the next videos now 3) not sure 4) this it I think 5) perhaps :-)
I tracked your progress from your social media posts. Thanks
i like dreamers
no storms, good thing, you dont want to be in a storm or a rouge wave in a ''bottoms up'' cat.
I see that there is a solar-powered catamaran that can travel unlimited distance at 5 knots and run the AC as well
I take it sailing you're not going much faster than 5 yachts and I don't know how much fuel you'll burn running the AC
So night shift always has at least one person, right? Course correction, rogue waves, squalls... all bad news. If anyone sails a solo voyage in smaller vessels do they drop anchor when sleeping?
Can't drop anchor in 1000s of metres of water.
Single handers usually try to sleep in 10 to 15 minute increments, taking a look around in between.
LoL "Adventure" LoL
No calorie counting on this trip then...LOL
You need a trained cook that has experience being out to see for weeks? This is my dream
Comon men you are in the middle of the ocean and still eating burger ? 😆
It does Not have a Hard top.
There is a nice fibreglass bimini/hard top over the cockpit but a canvas one over the helmsman...
anyone make wine from your fruit that you cant manage to eat?
What is with the solemn, melancholy music at the beginning of the video? I mean really, when you get to take a trip like this, you should be thrilled!!! Do you realize that less than 1% of 1% of 1% of 1% of 1% of people anywhere who step on a boat of any kind ever get the opportunity to do what you have done here? If you are going to make videos, at least put some "life" into the music you use for it. Otherwise, maybe you should specialize in videos of funerals instead.
