Neil Young put out a double album title “ A Journey into the Past “ . On its cover was the blurry depiction of what looks to be the KKK riding out of a dark mist . On it were the songs “ Alabama “ & “ Southern Man “ , and others which told the sad story about the southern states of the US . Lynyrd Skynyrd answered with “Sweet Home Alabama “ where he says “ the southern man don’t want him around any how “
And that’s why they were the best. From the stage, 2 died in the crash: Ronnie Van Zant (lead singer) and Steve Gaines (guitarist in red pants), not shown on the stage, Cassie Gaines (Steve’s sister). Most survived the crash because there was no fuel in the plane. Six perished and 20 survived the crash. But, 2 out of 7 musicians died, and 1 of the 3 Honkettes died. Yes, 3 guitarists, and 1 bassist.
LS always played the best live performances of any one ever. One of the few who did it all the time. Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines the guitarist to Ronnie's left and Cassie Gaines one of the back up singers. Passed in place crash. Cassie was Steves sister. Thanks for the reaction. 😊
That drummer, Artimus Pyle is the only band member still alive. Three guitars, one bass (The Guitar Army), piano, drums, lead singer and back up singers (The Honkettes). The plane crash took the lead singer, the guitarist wearing the red pants, his sister a honkett, the road manager, pilot and co-pilot. One of The Honkettes Leslie Hawkins is also still be alive. There are documentaries about the band and the plane crash that can give you all the info you're looking for.
This still brings on so many emotions for me. Grew up listening to them. Seemed like it was so sudden we lost them. This song was written when Allen Collins (tall guy) wife said to him one day “if I leave here tomorrow would you still remember me”. That was what inspired the song.
R.I.P. to this line-up of Lynyrd Skynyrd from 1977 (Only drummer Artimus Pyle from this footage is alive today)... Ronnie Van Zant (vocals) and Steve Gaines (guitar) died in the '77 plane crash w/ Steve's sister Cassie Gaines (who was a backing singer) Allen Collins (guitar) who co-wrote 'Freebird' was paralyzed in a car accident and passed away in 1990... The other members passed away over time - Leon Wilkeson (bass)... Billy Powell (piano)... and Gary Rossington (guitar) Currently, Lynyrd Skynyrd is touring w/ no classic members ... Ronnie's brother Johnny Van Zant is the current singer and Rickey Medlocke (guitar) from the band Blackfoot, who helped found Lynyrd Skynyrd before they were signed, are the key members.
Medlocke did not help "found" Skynyrd. The five founding members were Ronnie, Allen, Gary, Bob Burns and Larry Junstrom. Ricky played drums for a short time in '70, '71 while Bob dealt with some personal issues.
What is so sad, is their plane crashed three and a half months later killing the lead singer, and one of the lead guitar players. and his sister who was one of the back up singers. I was lucky enough to see their last concert the night before the plane crash. Ronnie Van Zant, singer. Steve and Cassie Gaines are the 3 members that died.
You have to remember, in 1977 no cameras were allowed in any concerts and our phones? Our phones were mounted to the walls in our kitchens 😂 I saw them after this show at what was then Rich stadium in Buffalo NY. That October was the plane crash...... A very sad day for the music world 😢 FLY HIGH FREEBIRD 🦅
Nothin says freedom like southern rock. And Skynyrd was the best to ever do it. Great pik, great reaction. Loved it Sky. Ty . Much love from the Top o Dixie, Richmond Va ☘️🇺🇲
I love ❤️ Skynyrd!!!! Best southern rock band 🎸!!!!! First three letters are SKY, what a coincidence!!!!!!! lol 😆…. Glad to see you back and reacting to some great classic rock!!!!! This music will never die!!!!!!
The vast amount of females in the audience were there mostly I assume for Peter Frampton, he rose to fame in 1976 with his live album Frampton Come Alive and he was the most popular man on the planet.. .. Skynyrd was the opening act for his tour in 77 .
How Ikonic is that one Sky? The studio mix is perfection but the live performance here is a must see and hear for any fan of Rock. Blistering guitar amidst a blizzard of notes, those guys were going overtime and one of the best 3 guitar onslaught ever! Legendary show. The Outlaws do a similar epic in Green Grass and High Tides, the 20+ minute live version should be heard if you have time, the studio original is incredible as well if you are unfamiliar with it. Looking great as always my dear, always nice to Rock Out with you! Happy Holidays! 🎄
This is the greatest performance of "Freebird". It shows Billy Powell's, who had been a roadie for the band, classical piano training. The "3 Guitar Army" of Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, and Steve Gaines jamming as one, and you cannot exclude Leon Wilkeson on bass who is no less brilliant. Driving the beat on drums is Artimus Pyle, who is a Marine veteran. And of course, lead singer Ronnie VanZant who was at the top of his game. The back-up singers, "the Honkettes" consisted of JoJo Billingsly, Leslie Hawkins, and Cassie Gaines. They are all gone now except of Leslie and Artimus who is still rockin' on with his own band playing many of Skynyrd's greatest songs. A few months later Ronnie, Cassie, and Steve, along with road manager Dean Kilpatrick and two pilots were killed in the plane crash when it went down in rural MS.
Sky, this is truly one of the most epic live performances ever recorded. The band members were: Ronnie Van Zant - Lead singer Gary Rossington - Slide and rhythm guitar. He's wearing a dark long sleeve shirt and jeans and playing a Gibson SG. Alan Collins - Lead solo. Alan wrote the solo part when he was only 16 years old. He is wearing all white and playing a Gibson Explorer. Steve Gaines - Rhythm and doubles the lead on part. He is wearing a white shirt and red pants and playing a Gibson Les Paul. Leon Wilkeson - Bass guitar Billy Powell - Piano Artimus Pyle - Drums Steve Gaines was from Oklahoma and took over the third guitar part from Ed King (from California) who left the band. Artimus Pyle was from South Carolina and took Bob Burns place as drummer after Bob left the band. Ronnie, Gary, Alan, Leon, Billy and Bob were all from the west side of Jacksonville, Florida and most went to the same high school. The band's name is a dig at their high school physical education teacher, Leonard Skinner, who hassled them about their long hair. On October 20, 1977, Ronnie, Steve, Cassie Gaines (Steve's sister and a backing singer), their road manager and both pilots were killed when the chartered plane they were traveling on to their next concert ran out of fuel and crashed. All the other band members on the plane sustained injuries, many of them severe. Gary Rossington was the last living original member of the band when he passed away last year. Artimus Pyle (Drums) and Lesley Hawkins (Backing singer) are the only members of this version of the band that are still alive. Lynyrd Skynyrd was great in the studio, but their live performances were what really set them apart from other bands. Their level of musicianship was very high and they would practice 10 hours a day to optimize their parts. When the band added Ed King as a third guitarist (replaced by Steve Gaines) they were able to play all of the guitar parts in concert just as in the studio. You might want to check out the other outstanding videos from this concert including "Sweet Home Alabama". Other live performance videos to check out include "T for Texas" and "Call Me The Breeze" from the Knebworth 1976 concert. Additionally, any of the videos from the Convention Hall concert are outstanding live performances. However, bottom line, any pre-crash Lynyrd Skynyrd song/video is a good Lynyrd Skynyrd song/video. Lynyrd Skynyrd continues to tour to this day, however, as all of the original members of the band have passed away and the only two members of this version still alive are not part of the current band, the current version is just a tribute band.
Sky, these are the people who died in the plane crash: Ronnie Van Zant, the band's lead singer and founding member Steve Gaines, the band's guitarist and vocalist Cassie Gaines, Steve's older sister and the band's backing vocalist Dean Kilpatrick, the band's assistant road manager Walter McCreary, the pilot William John Gray, the first officer All the other members survived but some were injured: Gary Rossington: The last surviving original member of the band. He suffered a broken leg, two broken arms, and a punctured stomach and liver. Artimus Pyle: The drummer who suffered broken ribs. He and two other survivors reached a farm, where a farmer mistook them for convicts and shot in the air. Pyle convinced the farmer they were crash survivors and needed help. Allen Collins: A surviving band member. Billy Powell: A surviving band member who suffered severe facial lacerations and almost lost his nose. He died of a heart attack in 2009. Leon Wilkerson: A surviving band member.
Omg that’s so dang sad! Especially Pyle trying to convince the farmers. I knew it was a terrible crash and that the lead singer Yes Ronnie Van Zant! That’s it. Died so early at such hard earn success. Truly sad. The Hank you for filling me in on that.
The greatest American band in history .. Sadly only the drummer (Artimus Pyle) is the only one left. Rest in Peace .. Ronnie , Allen , Billy , Steve , Leon , and Gary.
Allan Collins died in 1990 after a car crash in which he was paralyzed fron the waist down. Leon Wilkenson passed away in 2001. Gary Rossington passed away in 2023.
Fun fact: In all the years I've watched this video, not once I noticed that Ron was wearing a Neil Young t-shirt. 😂 Great reaction, Sky. You look as lovely and beautiful as ever. Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year for you and your family.
Hi cutie I was 15 years old during that summer this was recorded I was always blown away by the musicianship of Lynyrd Skynyrd this is the best live recording ever it crushes the studio version after hearing this
There are some great documentaries on UA-cam of them. And there are some ominous things in them. Such as Ronnie Van Zandt's (the lead singer) father talking about how as a kid, Ronnie kept saying that he was going to be a singer and wouldn't live to see 30 years old. And sadly it was kinda prophetic, because he passed just a couple of months after this concert at the age of 29.. It's weird to think that I'm now older than he was.
Not that it's anything to anyone, but after the crash, I worked in a big club after the guys got back to working and they came to play. They had the red guitar and let me hold it in my hands and I couldn't touch the strings. Not sure why. Wanted to. Was a solemn evening but man, I reckon we all got laid that night or close to it, and THAT'S why we sing. God bless America.
Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant Guitarist Steve Gaines(red pants) and Steve's sister back u0 singer Cassie Haines along with road manager Dean Kiilpatrick and the piolets parished in the plane crash.Ronnies brother Johnny took over singing when the survivors reunited 10 years after the crash
Bill Gramm put on the Day on the Green concerts at the Oakland Coliseum. There were at least four or five a year. My first one was in 1979( I was 12) Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, AC/DC with Bon Scott, Mahogany Rush and St. paradise. Tickets were about $20. They were a blast.
Epic performance. Survivors of there plane crash later that year were the piano player, drummer, and guitar player at the beginning of the song. Maybe one or two others. Airplane went down in Louisiana swamp country after fuel exhaustion. The band was at the hight of their career in 1977.
Ronnie Van Zant lead vocalist, Stevie Gaines guitarist maroon pants, his sister Cassie Gaines backing vocals, and Asst Mgr Dean Kilpatrick, died in the crash October 20, 1977. Allen Collins fingers should have been sliced to pieces, Artimus Pyle drums, Gary Rossington guitar, Billy Powell pianist, who was actually a former roady for the group, and Leon Wilkeson on bass.
I saw them 2x before the crash Ronnie Van Zandt the singer Steve Gaines one of the guitar players and his sister Cassie Gaines from the band died their road manager and the 2 pilots died Oct 22 1977 the piano player Billy Powell was their roadie at first and one day he said if he was to play Free Bird he would play like this on the piano and they fired him as the roadie and hired him to play the piano
Actually, the BEST live performance of Freebird was a year earlier in 1976 when in England to support the Rolling Stones who were the headliner. They BLEW away the Stones with an amazing live version of this classic song. Guitarist Alan Collins (in red) steals the show. Look up here on UA-cam… Lynyrd Skynyrd Free Bird Live August 21st, 1976
Every song from the 80s is the original singers Gen x we had the best music the best times we didn't rush home from school to play on the phone we stayed outside til the sun went down playing baseball looking for something to jump on are bikes I fill sorry for Gen X😢
Merry Christmas Sky ❤️ Happy New Year ! Love your reactions through out the year 🔥 that’s why Maynard from T⚙️⚙️L does not allow camera phones at his shows 🌀👁🌀
All of them were in the plane crash and the reason most survived was the plane run out of fuel so no fire. Three died, Ronnie Van Zant the singer, Steve Gaines the guitarist in white shirt and red pants and his sister Cassie Gaines back up singer.
My favorite band back in the late '70s. Everything seemed so much better then; people were kinder and more tolerant, and the music was more enjoyable. Living in the moment rather than watching it through a cell phone camera. Everyone loved seeing an American flag, and everyone respected. Everyone loved the rebel flag as well, because while everyone wasn't from the south, everyone had a bit of rebel in them, long before the intolerant conformists came along and decided to be offended by everything.
It was said that alot of the girls were there to see Peter Phampton ! check out BABY I LOVE YOUR WAYS Live from same concert Other live performance LOS LOBOS LAMBA Live ...and Linda Rondtstant HEATWAVE Live i
Peter Frampton LIVE is one of the biggest selling Albums of all time. He was born 10 miles from me in Beckenham,South East London,English and he and David Bowie were both in the same Art College and taught by his Dad:)
Thanks Sky for reacting to this performance. I was there for this “Day on the Green” show at the Oakland California Coliseum. I had just graduated high school in the South S.F. Bay Area. A terrific line up: the Outlaws opened; next was Santana; followed by Lynyrd Skynyrd; and headliner Peter Frampton. Yes most of the ladies were there to primarily see Frampton who was at his peak. But Skynyrd just KICKED BUTT!, so the group I was with left after just a couple of Peter’s songs. Yes those were the days before cell phones(and even the wide use of Bic lighters ;-) so one had to just experience and be in the moment- on whatever your chosen mood enhancing substance.
I'm thinking that Neil Young shirt that Ronnie is wearing was a public support of Neil that there was no ill will between the two. Neil had written songs about "Alabama" and "Southern Man" that were a critique Skynyrd thought was a little harsh if you listen to the lyrics in "Sweet Home Alabama". This concert is classic indeed. Peter Frampton played a set on the same day which is why you see so many cute girls in the audience, LOL!
Yes I always remember in Sweet Home Alabama “Southern man don’t need him around anyhow.” Was a response to Neil’s song “Southern Man” which is a great song as well.
Hi Sky! ❤. Former Skynyrd guitarist Ed King, who left the band in 1975 and played the opening riff on Sweet Home Alabama was also guitarist for the Strawberry Alarm Clock back in 1967! ua-cam.com/video/4rw1_FNdy-Y/v-deo.htmlsi=HPX70BX_Q8KzMOQh
don't worry about sounding bad (you do not), we all have our bad days, and we can understand, shit happens. You just watched something historic here, it was the last show with the original band members. The plane crash happened roughly 3 months after this show. You're right: 1 vocalist, 1 drum, 1 bass & 3 guitars. As for cell phones in shows, I'm older, so when going to a show, I don't bring it--too dangerous anyway, as I often come back with bruises, minor cuts, smashed toes or a bit worse (missing tooth at Metallica's Québec Magnetic). Don't want to break the phone, so it stays at home.
It seems people are using the term literally out of context more often now days. No the guitars were not literally on fire. This is my favorite LS live concert to watch on you tube.
FYI: Skynyrd despises Neil Young. Neil fired shots for no reason in 'Southern Man' and Skynyrd destroyed him in 'Freebird' Regardless of that, Coof-19 proved Neil Young was definitely the chump. Look it up.
Day on the Green line-up w/ Peter Frampton. This video is a time capsule for me, I was there. Ticket was like $10. Just think, all the hot chicks are now collecting Social Security! Gramma was hot back then

Billy Powell is very underrated he is not given enough praise.

Ronnie's wearing a Neil Young shirt here, and Neil wears a Lynyrd Skynyrd shirt in the concert film Rust Never Sleeps.
All those beautiful young girls are now grandmothers.
Hell of a band Lynyrd Skynyrd! Southern Rock's finest!💥💥🎸🎸🤠🤠

One of the all time greatest live rock performances of all time in my opinion.
Epic!!!... 'nuff said.
Yes sir Ronnie we still remember you...

I love ❤️ Skynyrd!!!! Best southern rock band 🎸!!!!! First three letters are SKY, what a coincidence!!!!!!! lol 😆…. Glad to see you back and reacting to some great classic rock!!!!! This music will never die!!!!!!
Woo! Freebird!
I remember those times when you could put 80.000 people together and they got along fine.
greatest rock band of the era hands down
The vast amount of females in the audience were there mostly I assume for Peter Frampton, he rose to fame in 1976 with his live album Frampton Come Alive and he was the most popular man on the planet.. .. Skynyrd was the opening act for his tour in 77 .
Hey kids, see how cool your grandma's were!!
Thank you gorgeous Sky for reacting to this great song and for sharing us your precious time.
Merry Christmas 😍🎄
Gotta watch the live version of Call Me the Breeze. Epic
You make good points Sky. And they say times are a changing..... I suppose they are, but not always for the good. Loved your reaction.... Fantastic!

One of the only things in this world that makes me emotional.
Freebird fans are on the move. 3rd new freebird reaction ive seen in 10 days.
This is the greatest performance of "Freebird". It shows Billy Powell's, who had been a roadie for the band, classical piano training. Watch in amazement as a huge crowd watches and claps, not a phone in sight.
I was 17 when this concert took place. Great band 😊
Love the reaction love the band and you look amazing!
Sky, this is truly one of the most epic live performances ever recorded. The band members were:
Ronnie Van Zant - Lead singer
Gary Rossington - Slide and rhythm guitar.
Leon Wilkeson - Bass guitar
Billy Powell - Piano
Artimus Pyle - Drums
Steve Gaines was from Oklahoma and took over the third guitar part from Ed King (from California) who left the band. Artimus Pyle was from South Carolina and took Bob Burns place as drummer after Bob left the band.

Actually, the BEST live performance of Freebird was a year earlier in 1976 when in England to support the Rolling Stones who were the headliner. They BLEW away the Stones with an amazing live version of this classic song. Guitarist Alan Collins (in red) steals the show. Look up here on UA-cam… Lynyrd Skynyrd Free Bird Live August 21st, 1976
my #1 band. and then pantera.
Thank you for jamming to this awesome classic. Remember me? It has been a while. I just started following your updated IG account as well.
Great reaction!😋👍👍
Thank you!! 😁
Every song from the 80s is the original singers Gen x we had the best music the best times we didn't rush home from school to play on the phone we stayed outside til the sun went down playing baseball looking for something to jump on are bikes I fill sorry for Gen X😢
this was a show where they actually opened up for Peter Frampton... poor Frampton had to follow this 😂
Merry Christmas Sky ❤️ Happy New Year !
Love your reactions through out the year 🔥 that’s why Maynard from T⚙️⚙️L does not allow camera phones at his shows
🌀👁🌀
Sky … have you reacted to anymore SKYNYRD SONGS in the last two weeks and is your cold 🥶 gone?
We had fun in the 70's
One of the best bands in American History. Left us with timeless music but gone way too soon.
I NEED YOU, T for Texas, Call Me The Breeze.
❤❤❤
Good start

There was a big fight between Neil Young and Lynyrd Skynyrd. They wrote a song about it
I'm thinking that Neil Young shirt that Ronnie is wearing was a public support of Neil that there was no ill will between the two.
Frampton, Skynyrd, Santana, and The Outlaws. I wound up going both days.
@@skanderfish3641 Lucky you!
Yes I always remember in Sweet Home Alabama “Southern man don’t need him around anyhow.” Was a response to Neil’s song “Southern Man” which is a great song as well.
The south will rise again🤘
On The Hunt - Winterland 1975
Great reaction.. you need to react to live ELO
The plane crash was 3 mths after this concert.
Hi Sky!
Okay, who's gonna tell her about the Neil Young & Lynard Skynard feud?
Neil Young:The Singer or Neil Young: The Manchester City Footballer in The 1970's ?
Lynyrd Skynyrd Is The Best 💯 Period,Hot Sexy Reaction Sweetheart ❤❤❤❤ & Happy Holidays ⛄❄️
don't worry about sounding bad (you do not), we all have our bad days, and we can understand, shit happens.
Hope Neil Young will remember, a southern man don't need him around!
Ya, their plane crashed right after this concert 😥😥😥
It seems people are using the term literally out of context more often now days. No the guitars were not literally on fire. This is my favorite LS live concert to watch on you tube.
FYI: Skynyrd despises Neil Young.
Neil fired shots for no reason in 'Southern Man' and Skynyrd destroyed him in 'Freebird'
Regardless of that, Coof-19 proved Neil Young was definitely the chump. Look it up.
A cold on your chest must be really awful.
Everytime I have watched and heard this I conclude the same.
Trashy. Are they related ?
Lynyrd Skynyrd and Neil Young had some beef, with each performing a (mild) diss song about each other, which makes the t-shirt choice even cooler.
Play some Skynyrd man wooooooo..lol
FRREEEEE BIIIIRRRRRD!
@ 🤘🤘
Day on the Green line-up w/ Peter Frampton. This video is a time capsule for me, I was there. Ticket was like $10. Just think, all the hot chicks are now collecting Social Security! Gramma was hot back then
