Natural gas is not toxic or poisonous at all. It is flammable but not toxic, the reason why people can die from long term exposure is because it can suffocate you by basically pushing the oxygen around it. The headaches people get after a period of exposure isnt from a toxic compound but lack of oxygen that you are getting
The producer or illuminating gasses, coalgas, oilgas, and the like, used before natural gas became available in many urban areas was toxic and odorless. Of course, this unnatural gas was mostly carbon monoxide. This is how people used to commit suicide by putting their head in the oven. Natural gas, prior to processing, is usually quite odorous, too, and after processing they add mercapton to reodorize for safety purposes. I doubt odorless natural gas exists anywhere other than in processing plants. You're correct, the only significant health hazard from natural gas is dry drowning.
@@nicoraguathesavage2927 Natural gas comes from the earth itself hence the name natural gas. Its not manmade and its bio friendly how is it killing the planet?
This reminds me of when people have committed suicide, or mistakenly died from inhaling exhaust(Carbon Monoxide) from exhaust pipes. In which they say it's not the gas that actually kills you. But the lack of Oxygen kills you since the exhaust is blocking out the Oxygen.
In case you were wondering; she said that NG is odourless. That’s true but what you are smelling when you do smell NG is the chemical added to it called “mercaptan”. That’s added to indicate that it’s near if there is a leak that can cause harm, etc.
would that only happen after its extracted and stored? If it leaks to nearby towns directly from the pump, will it still have that mixture from the process?
Great video. Thank you for the information. Just a couple of notes, natural gas is not toxic but rather it is an asphixiant. Unlike other hydrocarbon fuels, it is lighter than air (SG~0.58) and so, it rises rapidly when it escapes into air. Flammability range is between 5% and 15% concentration in air; so it does not explode when it is released suddenly. Below 5% it would not ignite. Above 15% it would extinguish a flame and may also cause suffocation. An odourant is often added to it so it's presence can be detected by a person, with a normal sense of smell, when its concentration in air is about 1%, long before it becomes explosive.
Great comment. But I think it might be toxic and harmful, especially before it's processed. Think about sulfur for example. Even tho it might rise fast along methane, rain will get it to the ground. Acid rain :(
They didn’t specify with or without sour gas. I guess it depends the stage at which you would notice the gas. Methane alone is not toxic. Keep those LELs on!
They add H2S so it can be detected, NG is colorless odorless H2S is a sulfur gas the smell you get if there is a leak . I worked in Gas and Oil 8 years .
You show gas deposits as horizontal beds but in the Permian basin gas deposits are in vertical zones. That’s why directional drilling is used more pay zones can be harvested with one hole.
If we're talking climate change, it should also be noted that methane can be easily made from electricity water and CO2 in a Power-to-gas system (or P2G). P2G has the potential to replace fossil natural gas entirely while using the existing distribution and storage infrastructure dramatically reducing its cost over hydrogen as a replacement high density chemical fuel for applications that require infrequent refueling with large energy demand such as trucking, construction, farming, aircraft, spacecraft, ocean vessels. (basically everything that runs the economy and isnt a personal commuting vehicle or running on an electrifyable track.)
Methane actually causes surface level ozone toxicity, and it is also asphyxiant. Lack of O2 is specifically why CH4 kills because it's a direct displacement, thinking about it as a "not a specific toxin" is the wrong technicality to think about it

Yes, it doesn't create co2. But hydrogen right now is produced by splitting natural gas into co2 and h2. You can store the concentrated co2 underground, but the process is expensive. It can also be created by splitting H2O into hydrogen and oxygen (Electrolysis). But that cost a lot of energy, and not that economically viable.
