i have been a mechanic for 15 years, use a little plastic bag and put it around the filters when you take them off and the fuel and oil will drip in the bag. it will keep everything clean. your filters should be tighten a quarter to half a turn when it makes contact with the surface.
Don't worry about an air filter being a bit thick as long as the casing will close. Only worry if it is too thin so it is loose in the casing. That old filter looked very dirty. Good that you changed it.
A word of caution when filling your fuel filter. The way you went about it was you opened the cock in the water separator. That is diesel that came directly from the main tank into a cruddy separator bowl then into the clean side of the new fuel filter. The centre hole of a filter is the clean side. You have no way of seeing what is actually going into the new filter. The little holes on the outer edge is where the unfiltered diesel goes it then passes through the paper filter then exits though the centre hole. So the way you did it is you poured possibly contaminated diesel into the filer which then goes directly into the injector pump and injectors. This could cause pump damage of injector clogging. It's not the end of the world but cleanliness is the best. Is there not a manual fuel pump to prime the filter? This filter practice also goes with oil filters. Some people like to fill them first if they are vertically mounted. Personally I don't bother.
Wesley, Amy good seeing you again, Isn't boat life a learning experience? Your air filter needs to be snug so that the air travels through the filter and not around the filter. As for your old air filter, that was disgusting lol. It is better to change the Air filter often otherwise the engine will suck in dirt and not get enough clean air. Dirt in the engine will create excess wear in the cylinders. Definitely one thing to check when doing service is looking for lose wires and leaking hoses. The engine wire order does not matter as long as the connection is secure. As for the colour of the connectors try to keep the colour the same. On the package of connectors it may tell you that different coloured connectors are for different size of wires. You will also notice that on the crimpers there are coloured dots these related to the colour of the connectors. TIP when crimping do two crimps on the connectors. Best wishes to all four of you. Mark Alberta, Canada
Next time use a small strap wrench for filters as they fit easier, also filters should only be hand tight to seal. Also boat engines have low run hours so only need annual service. Never put your hand over air intake to try and stop a runaway diesel, you will severely damage your hand, runaway diesels are rare and only with very worn engines that are burning their oil. Well done for getting this done so, it’s nothing to be scared of as you’ve found
You should change your engine oil, and oil filter every 250 hrs of usage, your diesel filter every 500 hrs. Best thing you can do for your engine. It’s not once or twice a year, like your gearbox oil.
Go Cassandra 🎉🤗. I love your enthusiasm when you do something "technical", you've definitely earnt your gold star from me this week 🌟. And I must say you do keep a very clean engine bay 👍👏 😉

Just as an fyi.. Cassandra comes in different forms ... She sometimes has short legs or only one leg, or a 3 bolt type set up, she also comes looking like a lil cap w a wrench socket atrachment, or has a sling or round key form.. she is varietiable and comes in as many forms cause there are a large variety of engines& they each have oil filters in complicated places. If you search for: marine oil filter wrench, it should show u a huge variety. All u need is the size of filter u use& then pic the best Cassandra for u. Pls remember to add a dab of oil on the filter gasket & make sure the old ring is indeed off. It prob would be good if you write down a parts list, take a pic of it, (or take a pic of the empty boxes& containers) then make them a favorite pic, so u can find it back easily & take the mystery out off odering. If you have a permanent marker (white laquer type) pls mark the bottles that have used oil in em. Often parts store will accept old oil, but check first. Pls always disconnect ur battery (ies) before tinkering w wires.. cause .. well just trust me. If u ever want to get into the entire electricity subject a bit more, or take the mystery out of it, u could order the book: The 12 volt Bible (its an older book) Alternatively the Boatowners Mechanical and Electrical Manual will turn u into old pros in no time& have u never be afraid to tackle an issue again. We got a boat, and oo my goodness, always something, but like you both, we get her done every time thanks to the Google box, hah. I'm wroth you Amy the oil part is the worst ...
Used oil ... You can generally tell by the smell of it whether it is used or new. If you ever pass nb Sunflower then say hello and I'll give you some service tips.
Be very very careful when storing old oil for a long period of time. Because gravity and time will settle the black contaminates to the bottom of the container and the oil will look fresh even when its old used oil. Look closely at the bottom of the container for the tell tail black deposits. If you see them it old oil.
If I heard you correctly you operate on diesel fuel, not gasoline. I would pass the drained oil through filters Xtimes and add it into a full diesel tank when you fill up. Works here in the Arctic...
By filling your diesel filter in the center hole off the bottom of your diesel filter/separator, completely unfiltered diesel will go straight into your pump/injectors. Please avoid this in the future.
