    This experience has been amazing and very informative. Working with Alan and Sam has taught me so much about the industry and myself. Taking what I have learned from them, I have been able to make my work flow more streamlined and honestly, less stressful. I have a very busy schedule, so going into a video/stream having a full plan set and scripted has taken a lot of the pressure off allowing me to make better content. It has been enjoyable for my community and I have found that I am enjoying things much more as well. Streams that I have a structure, knowing I have a goal has made me feel like I don't have to be "on" all the time. Making things flow better. With this, it has also made streams that I don't have a goal for turn out being great bits of content for my short form videos. So no matter what I am doing, I am making content and feel like I am doing less work since most of it is done before I even hit the go live. Working with these two has been an experience like non-other and I am eternally grateful for the knowledge they have given me. I now feel, no matter the game I can attack it and make great content!

    An interesting discussion to have regarding gaming videos and perhaps even just UA-cam videos themselves is how our attention span and need for a story/goal has changed since the dawn of UA-cam.
    I remember being able to watch an hour long un-edited Minecraft video with like half of that time being dead air and fucking *loving it*.
    Is this just a case of getting older and requiring more visual stimulation? Or has the increase in the video standard across multiple platforms made videos like that unwatchable? And then the follow up question is, where do we go from here? Is there a content ceiling that requires a new medium to overcome (something like live streaming did) or is our need for better content never going to end?

    This is insane the difference between two videos on Irish's channel blew me away. I went into the Phasmo video and immediately knew what I was in for and it hooked me. Then I looked at her last video and I'm sorry Irish but it didn't hold my attention past the first running segment. I had no context of what was going on and if it was something I wanted to see. I hope you can keep up with content like the video featured here because if you can I would be talking about your videos with friends all the time.

    This is the video that I've been really waiting for from someone to make. I run a very niche gaming channel based off one game in particular (old school runescape) and I've been struggling to really take my videos and content to the next level. I've been fortunate enough to get to 40k subs, but I still feel like my content is drastically missing something/multiple things to really beef up the quality of content I produce.
    I'd love to have a sit down with you Sam to talk 1 on 1, but this video I think can really help me and I plan on watching this video dozens of times for weeks/months to come to be honest as I really want to succeed, and I appreciate all the time and effort you put into your content to help creators like me out. Thank you Sam! Hopefully I can do my best with my future content with the things I learn here. If by chance you read this comment, and want to collab, 100% would love to reach out and chat with you! Hi Sam, amazing video and content as always. I am just wondering if you could shed some light here (or in another video perhaps) about where new content creators can go to hire quality editors, thumbnail creators or even on a larger scale, mentors for content creation. I see you helping these people out or giving editing/content creation tips and I think to myself 'WOW, how cool would it be to be mentored by someone in the know!'
    Anyways I suppose I have two questions:
    1) Where to find quality editors/thumbnail-ists that understand subjective humour of the creator (besides the dreaded Fiverr..)
    and
    2) Where can content creators find a quality mentor (free and paid)? Thanks for your time and all the best with your content!

      I'm going to pinch a comment from another one of Allan's videos to someone else asking a similar question (ua-cam.com/video/JO5Qz0luWNY/v-deo.html )
      This is the breakdown for the intro
      - Set up (Character and conflict): You and your thesis or the debate of the video.
      - Hook (Hint at the journey): A nod at what you've done or how you will evaluate the points.
      - Tease (Promised Value): A brief exploration of what you either expect to learn or what the possible outcomes may be.
      More of a breakdown
      The character is either you or your audience (whoever is going on the journey, i.e. you if you're explaining YOUR experience, or breaking it down for others) within the thesis/essay, and your goal is to explain your debate and communicate it well.
      The conflict would be the evaluation, it's the argument you're making in favour of or against the thing you're talking about, trying to convince others of your argument in valid points. Now you can be clever with this and approach several conflicts within your thesis that you approach as you explain your points.
      The stakes wouldn't necessarily apply here, but your value (or promised value from your title and thumbnail) will be what you establish within your thesis. You can't exactly say 'If I don't convince you, I'm gonna do XYZ", it's not applicable to the content style. Tease the value you're promising, tell people WHY they should watch. Stakes does not equal value, and they are not the same.
      Hope this helps!

  • @noitibmar
    @noitibmar 2 роки тому

    I honestly don't believe stakes are necessary and if not done well feel super amateurish and artificial.
    Of course they can definitely add to something but generally when I watch a youtube video it's for the premise and because I expect them to actually complete the challenge.
    Otherwise why would the video exist?
    If there's a question as to whether something is achievable I would expect to see "Can I do X?" or an equivalent question in the title.
    Otherwise just "I did this but that" is generally gonna convey the same idea and fear of failure works as stakes 98% of the time.
    I think that's usually better than shoehorning in "If I fail I have to play another game oh no!"

    • @TheStoryCan
      @TheStoryCan 2 роки тому

      It is certainly a case by case basis, in the tease section of the intro you can either state the stakes or tease the value the video will offer, the value could well be the fact that you will take on a certain challenge.
      Basically you're totally correct, what's wonderful is this is such a maliable process, if the value is good enough the stakes aren't always necessary.

    • @SamWoodhall
      @SamWoodhall  2 роки тому

      We did mention that stakes aren't totally necessary. At 1:39 we say that it doesn't need to be a high stake, just a high level of value.

    • @noitibmar
      @noitibmar 2 роки тому

      @@SamWoodhall I think that's fair. I just think stakes are often over-valued and can cheapen a video if not used well, when it wouldn't make a difference to leave them out.
      And if stakes aren't important enough to the story to make it into the Title/Thumbnail, I'm not sure they're relevant at all.
      That's just where my head's at and I worry for people constantly trying to add stakes and up the stakes every video when they probably don't need to.

    • @SamWoodhall
      @SamWoodhall  2 роки тому +1

      Totally understand that. Stakes are just one part of telling stories, and not the full picture. I'm just trying to communicate how to use these storytelling techniques with gaming videos. It's not the full toolbox, but it's something that can help gaming creators make better videos.

    • @noitibmar
      @noitibmar 2 роки тому

      @@SamWoodhall Absolutely, and more better videos is something I think everyone benefits from.
      Framing content as a story is always going to be an incredibly powerful way to give things a solid throughline. I work in animation and making music videos is always a hundred times more successful when there's a story because it gives people something to come back for. Some meaning that gives a reason to not just listen through Spotify but actually watch the Video.
      I love trying to create that value for people.

    Personal I left the video with more questions than answers, I have very typical 2015-2017 UA-cam approach. Watching this didn't change that as the video in question was made from a stream, where I feel that the "if A then B" stakes work best, I'm not much of a streamer and even if I was I don't have many watching. I have a very "complex" way of thinking and learning so I'm sure the tools are here, they were not conveyed to me personally, perhaps if this had been focused around the more standard type of gaming video (recorded by oneself or with a few friends, and not streamed with audience interaction/involvement) I personally may have been able to take something from this video, but as it stands I didn't. I don't want to come across in the worng way, I need all the tips and advice I can get, but I lean very different than most and this didn't click with me.

      The exact same tools for telling stories would still apply if you weren't live. It's the same technique, just applied in a different wrapper.

      @@SamWoodhall I guess where I'm having the trouble is understanding how to apply them to "normal" videos, as an example I mostly play random games, mostly indie horror as of late, but still random, I don't know what to expect. So in trying to figure out how to apply story telling while while still keeping a genuine experience of the game. Maybe is the part of UA-cam I just enjoy most, but I feel alot of gaming content looses something if it starts to feel staged. Especially when it comes to horror.
