Hi. Sorry for delay in reply. I made up some linseed oil wax - beeswax, linseed oil and turpentine. Heated and mixed. Nice to apply to bare wood. Hope it goes well!
I just built my own 2 string canjo with a sardine can. Its nice to read the comments and seeing people try their hand at stringed instruments and carpentry!
Thanks. I don’t have this particular one anymore but I generally use the stewmac fret calculator for any chosen scale length. Many calculators out there but I’ve never had an issue with it and it’s various options, so give it a google!
Could be worth trying a different can - but should not really affect too much. A larger can will be a bit louder. Medium size strings can give a bit more over thin or think ‘i feel’. Having the string hole in the can closer to the middle will allow it to resonate more - but at the expense of either string height or redesign of how it mounts.
@@MikeHawkey I’m realizing as I’m playing with it more accidentally made a base. It’s a base string and if i put something to lift the string by the can it’s pure base.
I have made with bone nuts in the past. Bone is nice and easy to shape and works well - plus you could get creative with shape and style. I’ve got a lot more bolts than bone here!
I just started playing guitar and now I'm obsessed with stringed instruments. So naturally I have to build a canjo 🤘🎸
Nice one!
Great canjo, Mike. Gonna build one soon myself. What finish did you use? Cheers from Illinois, Usa. Subscribed!

I loved watching this video. Nice work!
Thanks!
This is a lot cooler after taking construction class
@@cinnamonbiscuit727 nice one.
Nice build! Curious about the fret spacing, neck length, etc. Cheers!

@@MikeHawkey awesome, thank you!
One bass one melody string
I think the musical possibilities are great if one spends a bit of time practicing (... rather than just building like me!)
i made a canjo and mine is so quite i can barely hear it what did i do wrong? i have a can of corn for the resinator

@@GunninWizard ah that will be a bit lower!
Just curious: Have you made any using bone or antler for the nut? Would that make any significant difference? I like the bolt idea. ❤️

I don't speak English very well, but ,what kind of strings are they?
Hi, electric guitar - 1 and 2 strings (highest 2)

Thanks. Here is my normal go to for the fret positioning for my builds: www.stewmac.com/fret-calculator/
