Creative idea! A lazier solution is to just mount a 70"+ modern flat screen like normal and play a scene with a digital window frame like you can find on youtube. Just requires a youtube premium subscription to avoid ad interruption. Not as portable but i can't imagine moving that huge thing instead of just adding more single TV's to other rooms anyway.
When he said 'baltic birch' I thought, "Oh man here we go. What's next? The gold chains and Rolex?" Go back to that scene in Pulp Fiction when The Wolfe asks Jimmy "If he's an 'oak man'" when offering to buy him a new bedroom set. If I were Jimmy, I would have said, "I'm more of a 13-ply guy." I bet The Wolfe would have told him to not get too carried away with his generosity.
Many people hate the claustrophobic feeling of basement living, particularly where basement apartments are concerned. This is a great solution to psychologically trick the brain to remove that "living in an underground hole" feeling.
I live in a flat that was once the cellar of a pub, my bedroom, the actual cellar has one window, the barrel shoot! So my big tv regularly has a different outdoor scenery on it for this very reason
Fun video ! Can you please edit yourself onto the screens super big like King Kong looking in the window and play it in the background of a future video and take no notice of it at all. Comments section would be pretty funny. Also just wanted to say thanks for all the videos. You have been inspirational to me to make stuff over the years and now to start making UA-cam videos ! So thanks !
It’s pretty much becoming cheaper to cover your walls with TVs rather painting them 😂 Great project David. I’ll keep saying it you could make anything and I’ll watch it your channel has always been personality’s based. We are here for you.
You could add some fancy routed wood framing with some glass even over the bezels to look like a "victorian sash window" and it would look even more real
My favorite game is guessing what movie/tv show David is watching while building. Awesome build! I was excited to see if after it was teased on the Making It podcast.
This is such a cool build and i find seeing how your transforming your shop into what you want is inapiring. My shop is very utilitarian but as i have been adding more desorative elements its made it a lot more enjoyable.
7:38 when I built French cleat cabinets into a van, so many people told me they were just going to slide around while we drove. Thanks Dave for demonstrating in this moment why they never did. Awesome project bud. Super fun!
Very nice build on the frame. For the electronic side you could just plug the TVs directly into any PC with three HDMI ports and tell Windows they are vertical. It would be cheaper and you get higher resolution.
Did something similar years back for a Holiday sales company. Had the sea washing up over the beach behind fake sash windows. Back in the day before 4k so the resolution was not great but the effect was .....effective. Biggest problem was allowing for the gap they wanted between the 'windows'. Great build. Enjoyed that
My man!!!! I was totally gonna do this in front of our kitchen sink since we don't have a window there, but I wussed out. This helps a ton! Thank you so much David. Keep on kicking ass dude!
I watched your chair video the other day where you mentioned being a big fan of Ryan Trahan. I dig the subtle nod to him with your ‘The Game Plan’ sequence!
For the power button - you could solder extra wire to make the button come out further. Then, place it on the underside of the frame. I love this build and most likely will steal your measurments and save me a hassle of wasting wood. Just getting into woodworking. Like to do things right from others knowledge and learn that way over just kinda doing it myself and seeing if things works.
Maybe hang the curtains higher so it looks more like a window? Weird that the top edge of the curtains are right at the top edge of the window. Also, maybe add framing around to make it more like a window?
Sweet build! I built a desk/table with a similar monitor setup but I did a small mullion in between to cover logos and the gap. Then fortunately had a pc with a proper graphics card to avoid the output matrix fight. As always great work!
I love the workmanship. Great job. I've been experimenting with making a 1:3 portrait video wall for about a year now. I'm surprised that a 4k video stretched across what is now about a 110 inch display looks good enough from a few feet away. My most recent experiment was with a matrox quadHead2Go box and a single portrait tv to see what it would look like with 3. I was not happy at close range so I abandoned that and am now working with 3 32" displays. But if you are happy with it I may rethink my project
*_I forget what it's called, is it parallax? You can (easily) make the screen sync with your camera(PC needed), so it looks more real. Like how The Volume works on The Mandalorian._*
That's an awesome build. I wanted to do something in my last shop, but since we just moved to Italy a month ago that will be put on hold for 2 years lol. Heard about it on the podcast, but think it turned out better than I even pictured (pun not intended)!
Your rebates (rabbets) go all the way along those side members and you can see a gap because the rabbet should be stopped short of the end of the wood. Did you overlook that? Great end result btw.
As an AV industry vet, I’d point out that, technically, you should buy TVs that specifically state they’re designed to be hung in portrait orientation. If not, they’re much more prone to overheat and you’re voiding the warranty. But that would probably at least triple the cost of your project. Awesome build!
@@AnthonyLoPrimo Correct. A lot of the cooling is passive, designed for the heat to rise away in a certain direction. When you turn the display, it may cause heat to dump right into sensitive components and shorten their lifespan. It was way more of an issue on older sets, but it can still cause issues.
@@AnthonyLoPrimo as someone who just has access to google, I’d point out that, there’s nothing online to substantiate the claim that mounting any tv vertically will make it more prone to overheat lol
@@jackson_a95you don’t need google, just knowledge in thermal dynamics. If the vents are at the top of the TV then it may not vent properly. BTW your google kung fu is pretty weak considering I found several provisos as the OP outlined.
3:45 Pocket screws work best if you run them in away from the edge of the receiving piece.. 4:33 Just to show that I'm not some sort of know-it-all troll (I actually do not know it all - at 47 a guy should know his limitations.. lol), I want to give huge props for showing this technique. I've seen it done before (I think I've even done it). It's a super handy tip. 8:13 lol Nice project. Thumbs up.
I know part of this was using cheap tvs, but have you seen some of the new tvs these days? I'm not talking about the screen quality, but how thin they have made them AND how they've improved the way they mount them on the wall. Someone I know recently got a new tv and got one that is so thin and so close to the wall that if you put a frame around it and set it to display a single image and mess with with image and brightness settings it would pass as a large framed photo or painting. It would be way more expensive, but I could see some people using those types of tvs to make some fake windows that are also still very usable as a tv, or if they go the hard route they could make it look like a photo when not in use. It isn't my tv so I don't know how much the built in settings allow you to change the brightness and if you could ever reduce it enough to make it look like a convincing photo or painting but making it look like a window would be super easy.
This was a fantastic build, but I'm surprised it wasn't easier (or cheaper) to just buy an 85" 4k and build a removable grille to mimic the panes that you could remove when its movie time.
Was going to but had trouble finding the correct size 5pin cable needed to extend them. I could have soldered extensions but my soldering skills are not up to par.
The end result looks great! I wonder if the light from the LED TV's can actually help with some seasonal depression that sets in during the winter months.
Nice build! Thanks for sharing all the ways you can't make the TVs work together! Just buy a bunch more TVs and make more fake windows in the orientation that those other boxes work. 😂
The only thing I’d do differently than Daniel is to make the frame look more like a real window. I’d face frame over the bezels to look like grilles and add a sill. If you’re worried about the face frame interfering with the receiver for the remote, I’m sure someone out there makes an external receiver…though I’ll admit to not researching that.
Yhea honestly I'd want to get 3 that had skinnier bezels as well so the gap between wasn't as bad. It'd make it far more useful but again cost.... I'd also probably go for computer fans and control of the system as most people already have a computer and buying specific controller to do the job seems unnecessary. Also give you a huge computer screen to use.
And since the same drywall, and if you do not have a magnet or a stud finder knocking on the wall, you can find the stud just by knocking and hearing the difference of that Luan versus the Luan and the 2 x 4 studs in the wall
I wonder if something like dakboard could be used with multiple monitors? I know they run on raspberry pi but they only have 2 hdmi outputs so that could limit the capabilities. Awesome project!
this is awesome. someone quoted me $17,000 for a printed scene with some borders and this could be done at a fraction of the price. Maybe I'll see if some handyman wants to take it on for me. thanks for the idea! btw, I'm sure you caught it on post edit but at 3:58 "it's heavy as AF" is "it's heavy as as F" double as.. maybe heave ass F? :)
I could not understand why you were worried about the weight of the combined tv's. After all, you had dangerous Dan there to lift them! He's always got your back and we all know how buff he is. I didn't know that he has to hide his face. Is he in the witness protection program? Is he one of the aliens who have recovered from UFO's in the recent past? Does he have three eyes as result of being raised in Russia near Chernobyl? Will we see Dan on TMZ this week? (BTW: I enjoyed watching this build. Thanks for sharing it.)
Real nice. I wanted to do this for a gaming room later down the line. But I plan on using only one bug screen, the triple solution here is not really my cup of tea. But great nontheless.
I've got no idea why but when you said 'using basic tools' I immediately got a mental image of caveman Picciuto with some flint tools hacking away at whole trees....I may need to go get some counseling. Definitly a cool looking project though.
I was wondering if you still have your mini metal lathe? if so are you satisfied with it and is there anything that it can't do that you wish it could? Are there any accessories that you wish you purchased immediately?
Where did the aircon unit go? 🤔 With a PC with a graphics card, could've utilised the 3 maybe 4 outputs. Looks good tho 👍👍 Oh, cant you angle the top down a bit? Wouldn't get the reflections off your studio lights then 😉
Now place a camera on the other side of the wall on the outside and connect it to the big ah screen window to have an actual window without ppl being able to look inside😂

Your attitude makes me smile Dave. I'm very happy that your leaning into making these videos with that spirit. Thank you.
Love this! You could add some wooden slats down the frame to hide the bezels and make it look more like a multi pane window.
Pretty obvious. Surprised he didn’t. It almost works but it lacks that last piece de resistance
Has the day come where it's cheaper to buy TVs than lumber huh?
I chuckled. Thanks.

Probs. Especially if the tv is like 2 years old.

Saw that video lol. It was cool diy racing sim wall with outside vision.
Looks so good Dave!!
Great build! God bless you and yours! Praying for you!
That looks awesome.. I would like to do a few smaller screens to convert the bedroom to give it the effect of flying through outer space or whatever

You’re a stud. Great content and inspiring for my builds.
With the power buttons you could cut the switches off and solder on more wire and link them all into a single power switch.
That is so cool, you have just got me in trouble with the wife. Lol😂
Great video, maybe one of your best!!

The“Insignia” logos are a little annoying but overall it is very good!
Loved this project. I wonder if it would make it lighter/cooler if the screens were removed from the plastic boxes?
I am going to try this weekend to remove the frames
What a lovely project!!! Now, i want to do it for my home!
Thank you for inspring me to do to my new house
