Hi Kenan, I've seen that you only have around 34,000 subs to be honest I would have thought you would be on around 100,000 + as you totally deserve it. All the hard work you put in is amazing, and your videos are brilliant and really helpful. I've got alot of friends who are also reptile lovers and I will spread your channel far and wide, I encourage everyone else reading to do the same :) You deserve it 👍
Thats a cool set up for the Sulcatta Tortoises. I didn't realise that their burrows were so large. I've seen pictures of Sulcatta burrows but seeing them like this is a lot different. I kept some here for a few years but rehomed them. They are not the easiest Tortoises to keep through our winters here in the UK.
Thank you for sharing I have two African sulcata tortoises What attracted me most to the African sulcata tortoise when I first saw one 10 years ago, was they have around their shells beautiful patterns of feathers very amazing
I can definitely relate with Kenan, I truly enjoy growing my own tortoise foods. The gardening is fun and there’s something about putting your own prize in your tortoise’s stomach that feels good.
I had a baby sulcata when I was 13. 5 years later the tortoise was starting to get enormous. I was going to set up a huge area for him in the back yard but hurricane Katrina just destroyed everything. I had to adopt him out to a family friend where he's still living happily in a huge lush area with other tortoises. I hope people who adopt these animals know what kind of commitment they are so that there aren't abandoned tortoises everywhere.
+grettagrids it really saddens me becuz I wanted him more then anything and did ALOT of research so I knew he'd be big.. in the summer willow will actually chase people out of my dog so I made a sign that says FUCK THE ROTTWEILER, BEWARE OF LARGE TORTOISE!
Doesn't matter how many times I've seen this video, it's always great. I didn't realize the two older ladies from S&S Exotics were there though until I watched it again today. They own an exotic pet shop here in Houston, TX and keep their animals in the worst of conditions. Terrible keepers and you'd be repulsed at their practices. They're friendly sometimes but damn man, it's definitely a sight to see. Great vid as always Kenan, looking forward to the next one. I may be coming by different parts of Florida in July and spending some time in Miami. If you're in the state then, could I possibly come by and check out the collection?
Almost made it to this one last year... I see some people I know in this video :-D .... Russ has convinced me to attend this years conference in the fall .... hope to see you there!
Hey! I live in Minnesota and absolutely LOVE tortoises and turtles. Since the winters are pretty cold here, I'm having trouble deciding what tortoise would be best. I will most likely keep it inside, but I will probably take it outside almost daily. Any recommendations on a species? I don't have much land, so a big one won't work😔.Thanks, love the vids!😀
***** you know that giant sulcata you saw well you know the 290 pound one that has the record for the largest one in captivity well the guy that owns him lives near me and i have seen it at the reptile show/expo 2 times, let me tell you it is massive and extremely cool
hi Kenan, all your video are great! always show your video to the Hong Kong turtle and tortoise group member, they all love your video. May i ask a question, maybe you can share some of your tips on the issue of tortoise uric acid, i think many people like to know this uric acid turn into stone problem (sulcata and star) what is your tip on this? i have a sulcata with this problem. couldn't find any video on this issues on youtube. best regards
I would like to know the weight of the big guy. I had a sulcate for 17 years. I got him from Bob when he was 3 years old. He was born without a tail. Bob thought he was a female. I thought he was until the last year that I had him. When I was weighing him I decided to flip him over and check. That is when it was discovered. It sure was a change in my cost of vegetables. My pen was 15 ft by 80 ft. He would eat it down to where it looked like a putting green. Then I would supplement with greens and some fruit. Cost me about $5 per day to keep him fed. I was always scrounging at fruit stand and farmers markets to buy up their stuff that wasn't going to make it a few more days or just wasn't in appealing condition to sale to the regular public. Some of them keep their over ripes they called them for me to pick up each week for a small fee. He would burrow back toward my patio. Some years it would get 30 feet deep. The last two years I allowed him to burrow. Started my concrete foundation and patio to start sinking into his hole. Each winter I would fill his burrow so he would not get caught in there during a rain storm. I had a heated house for him in the winter. He had no problem transitioning to going into the tortoise house since it was thermostatically controlled and warm. He would stay inside during cold days but if there was good sun he would be out getting some sunshine on his back. Back to the burrow. I jacked my patio and foundation back up where it belonged. Back filled in the soil and put a concrete support under it. Then dug and created a new patio area that had a hollow area 6ft X 8ft underneath Since the opening was a few feet from where he used to go in. It took him a couple weeks to get the idea that was where he was supposed to go. But he never tired to burrow anywhere in the yard again after that. Seeing you get into the hole reminded me when a teenage boy was over and he decided to climb into his hole face first. Since I filled in his hole each year. The tunnel in was only a bit wider that the tortoise. Around 2 ft wide. I have sandy loam. The side of the burrow were smooth and the bottom was loose sand. So the kid could not push himself back out the 10-15deg incline to get back out. His brother came in all scared and wanting help for his brother. We had to rope his foot and drag him back out. This was before much youtube. It would have been a great fail video of us getting him out. I had other kids crawl in there but they were wise enough to stay with their feet sticking out and told me they were going in or were going in to help fetch something out at my request. Better planning made it much less eventful. I broke my back when I was younger. So all is very sensitive and subject to easy further nerve damage. The tortoises get such a pattern of movement that is repetitive. I would be in his pen. Be in one of his pathways working on plants or water systems. He would plow me down. After the 3rd time he had done that and the fear he could really hurt or cause further nerve damage. I started think of rehoming him. That night I sat down to read the locale turtle society news letter. One of the member placed an add looking for an adult male. I called her and inquired about her knowledge and set up where she would put him. She had a 3 acre ranch that was covered in grass. She asked what I was going to charge her for him. I told her the cost of making sure he was properly cared for was all I expected. It worked out perfect for him. Made for a perfect diet for him. Since it was all grass area. She sends me a photo of him once in a while. The last year I had him. At the last weighing in spring when they tend to weigh a bit less because of not eating heavy in the cooler temperatures. He was 146 lbs is carpus was 26 inches long and around 18 inches wide. Locally I have only seen two others bigger then he was. They were about 170lbs.
I own a 29 inch leopard tortiose i live in south africa and got him 16 years back as a rescue his 45 years old now and still growing ana average 0.5 cm every 6 years hope one day he wil become the biggest leopard tortiose on record he will probably out live me
Thats fuckin cool dude, my baby Sulcatas have not really grasped burrowing yet but I'm sure as the grow older they will instinctually do so. Beautiful animals, always a pleasure to observe them
my rescue dude is 8 years now, and I let him burrow from april to september in the Pacific Northwest. He loves it even though I get worried because ground temps are about 50f year around. Try digging a small hole under a structure with a roof, and they will keep going down. Judging by the sand and rocks my buddy flings out, Moses probably has a tunnel system at least 20 feet now. Just remember to grab them before it gets really cold or rainy.
My Tortoise has some kind of infection on the bottom of his shell I soak them every day for 15. minutesSo I look at them every day I don’t know how or what he climbed over what he’s done but he’s got open like little lines on the bottom of his shell can you tell me what to do to clear it up I washed it with some peroxide and put some Neosporin ointment on it I hope I didn’t wreck it by doing that I’m very concerned
where is it in, sir? . Why now there is still its natural habitat .. I'm a fan of sulcata turtles from Indonesia. just can't afford to buy the sulcata 😢😢😢
Looks like a record Sulcata! I waited through the whole video to hear its weight, but they never mentioned it. Looks like 300 plus? Does anyone out there know?
+grettagrids thats what sulcatas do, they dig burrows and break stuff and they see you as a threat on their territory and its probs matingseason, just make an outdoor enclosure
hey I was hopeing someone would help me.I got my greek tortoise back from my dad and she has prolspsed intestines sticking about an inch out of her cloatia she is also very thin, weak, is developing cracks in her shell, the lines in her shell are turning white and she wont drink I am extremely worried about her and fear that she will probably die please help.
Hello, I found a sulcata tortoise yesterday across the street and I take it, I didn't found the owner. I want to know if I can donate the turtle in this place. can you give me the address? I'm in phoenix

This is beautiful!! The best tortoise habitat I've seen in my life. I really appreciate that there are people who keep their animals right.

+IntenseIGFX yea NO shit :( I knew mine would get big but wasn't expecting him to turn into a complete AHOLE of a pet.

+grettagrids he's prob better then any gaurd dog becuz he intimidates people.
"Peach leaves produce cyanide, so, I have to make sure I keep those raked up so they don't eat em" Cut to Tortoise eating fallen peach leave. LOL.
I have a baby sulcata, her name is Tili and she is about 3-4 months old!
Excellent episode Kenan! What a lovely tortoise sanctuary, I love his free style of keep, such passion.
the herp society in AZ has many sulcata of that size. The place has over 400 of them!
Subscribed! Going to use your videos in my homeschooling curriculum with my 10 year old son. He is going to love it! Keep up the great work!

I like his hatching method, ensures only the strongest survive and let's nature filter out the weak
Sulcatas are the best, there the best cage free pet
Possibly the biggest Sulcata in the world, no mention of his weight. Would love to know!
You should do a follow-up video to this.
My uncles friend breeds tortoise in phonox Arizona

+Roberto Carrillo He was saying that he has an indoor enclosure for the tortoises.
Pretty sure he has heated sheds, that's what I do.
In Az how do u keep sulcata warm during winter months ? I have one and I’m worried I use to take her in but she’s way bigger now? Help in Az!

Go to kingsnake.com, click on tortoises, they have every variety. I got an Aldabra thru the male, they travel pretty well.
There should be laws preventing breeders from sending these animals to northern parts of the country.
