Ohmicide was a very powerful tool back in the day, I was using it on every synth for dubstep/dnb, then I switched to trash, saturn, now rift. I still install Ohmicide on my system for some reason, didn't use it in more than 5 years but I always believe I will use it again sometime. The gui is horrible, that's why I stopped using it.
@@mikeexits maybe the same, the gui is horrible at first, but you get the hang of it in time, I feel It is very powerful compared to the other ones just by having so many options, but also too many things to mess around with and to easily fuck up the sound with. The convolution part is still very good imo, also for actual guitar amp modeling/emulating I think it's still the best option out there. I tend to use rift or saturn 2 just because it's much more faster to do something crazy in them. I still have a lot of patches saved with trash in them and still use it in them even now.

I objectively have way too many plug-ins so I have a Notepad++ directory with all the plugin makers, all the plug-ins, and their functions (2nd part still under construction) for reference. You guys (anyone reading) might have an aneurysm if I admit how many plug-ins I have on my laptop, haha. But yeah, I tend not to buy the newest things pretty much ever (except sometimes major updates) and instead I hover around Bedroom Producer's Blog for freebies, Humble Bundle for their occasional music bundles (usually with lots of sample packs and a bunch of Cherry Audio plug-ins), and Plugin Boutique's Deals page. So I don't have much experience with either the super expensive top-end plug-ins (like Fabfilter and *allegedly* Omnisphere) or very new ones that aren't freeware. The ones I paid the most for are Komplete 9/13, Arturia V Collection, and the iZotope bundle I mentioned before. I've also paid a decent bit of money for monthly experimental plug-ins from Puremagnetik ($9/month over a couple of years) and to get all the Glitchmachines plug-ins ($10 each on sale totaling $80). All of which I have found to be enjoyable to use and useful/inspirational, not to mention fun and engaging. I'm glad I found Weaver's channel, it's kind of homely for me as far as internet content goes. That said, I moderately to strongly disagree with some of his plugin opinions. Pendulate being one (I wholeheartedly love it) but I made a comment on that already. He makes great videos.
I agree Glitchmachines UIs are terrible but they are awesome plugins. I just press randomise until it does a sound I like then dial in the wet/dry because I can't figure out how to use the bloody things. They're good as as a send effect too
If you do end up diving in and trying to learn them, they're actually surprisingly simple. Cryogen, for example, is just 3 delays, 3 bitcrushers, some LFOs and a mixer section. The spreadsheet looking page is just mapping for the LFOs. And that's basically all there is to it.

It really is a beast of a distortion/sound mangler device and can achieve really textured sounds or wacky timbre destruction. I have all their plug-ins (although 2 of them have paid 2.0 updates I have yet to get, Cryogen and Cataract); another great plugin maker to mention is Puremagnetik. Their UIs are divinely simple and beautiful. I got all their plug-ins (Glitchmachines and probably most of the Puremagnetik ones) for $10 or less each. Not bad at all.
Some of these are gold. Also for Pendulate, I never found the UI to be an issue. I just downloaded and played around with it and fell in love with the cool chaos oscillator concept and the intricate cyclical sounds you can get out of it (I make somewhat experimental psychedelic music so it's right up my alley, haha). The UI was very simple and intuitive for me to use, personally. Not even in the same world as most of these others, at least to my humble eyes and mind. I still use it for a bit of a different starting synth sound; it especially shines in my usage for automated complex droning. I don't think I could see it appealing to you, so to your reaction I say, fair enough. Also it might just be me, but I think it would've been funny if someone sent screenshots of all of Reaper's stock plug-ins collaged on their screen and made to look almost like one massive plugin.

For Alter-Ego, it works in phonetic script, so typing words as we write them doesnt produce the correct result, for instance "i" (eye) is spelled "ae" in the script area.
You said Surge is ugly, and I agree with the default theme, but Surge has another theme which is really nice looking. You should give that theme a try. It comes by default in Surge XT btw
Oo, I can speak to a couple of these. The one that says Alter/Ego, is ChipSpeach, from Plogue, you have to learn how to enter the text, I did some demo audio for it, it takes some getting used to but pretty fun. Also Glitch Machines has much better versions, I also did some Beta testing for their paid plugins, great for glitching sounds. Some of these are very old SynthEdit plugins, and the UIs leave A LOT to be desired lol
Technically, you can still use Alter/Ego athoulgh plogue discontinued it, Perhaps plogue thought they were going to eat into the Vocaloid market with a half implemented product and locking features out of closed doors...
@@FFunez There are lots of different types of FM synth users, and since the concept can often be difficult to wrap your head around for some, there are actually some benefits to just putting everything there and letting people play with it. Any less functionality than this and you're hiding things, which may be good for worflow in most cases but no so much if you're trying to deepen your understanding of FM.
If you open up every parameter, then yes, you end up with an interface like that. Compare that to noise engineering basimilus iteritas alter, which is 6 op fm, focused so it doesn't do everything, with a fantastic UI.
Surge has a good interface imo its just all on one screen so its intimidating. Its actually pretty nice seeing everything at once sort of like a hardware synth.
I've never tried that knobby mess "araucann" but I'm exactly the type of insane person that would enjoy using such a device. For whatever reason, I have always been averse to using presets. I enjoy creating my own sounds and discovering new techniques by accident. This disaster of a plugin is right up my ally. I just wish the knobs were labeled more intuitively so I could see what is doing what to the sound.
Ohmicide is an absolutely brilliant distortion. It may be out of date but I still use it. Skrillex did also say that, I think it was in that video where he talks about how he uses FM to make his bssses from back in like 2010
When used correctly Realivox Ladies is actually really decent-- minus one singer they recorded XD Althoug I think they should definitely lower the price nowadays as other companies have made better libraries or much less now. --Edit XD : The lyrics being code, actually are. In Utua you have to type certain characters to trigger certain syllables etc.

I guess you're not familiar with the old H.G. Fortune synths. Actually really cool from an aesthetic standpoint, but impenetrable (to me) as far as deliberate sound design. One of them actually had a "ghosts" control where you could set how many and how often little ghosts would appear and float around (Ithink they may have affected the sound but I'm not sure). If they were available in 64 bit they would totally be on my "I will always install it despite never using it" list along with Freakshow Industries' MISHBY. Speaking of which, I wonder what you'd think of Freakshow's UI's. Dumpster Fire is a favorite of mine.

In here to defend glitchmachines cryogen, yes it can be overwhelming at first but its completely customizable and comes with a really good user manual, i use this thing constantly. It makes the good glitches. Those randomization features are awesome

Some of those look like rompler libraries made with David Holowitz's Decent Sampler. He has a pretty good UA-cam channel where he messes around with old 4 track cassette recorders and whatever else. You can actually make great instruments with it, but it doesn't allow for making UI's that look good. You just throw a jpeg on it and position some ugly knobs over it. But whatever, dude, it's not a commercial product. It's just one guy in a bedroom making free software which is actually really usable, imo. I turned an old drone synth I have into a DS library with an ugly ass UI like that, but it sounds great and I use it all the time.
gladiator is alright cause everything's on one screen. serum has so many menus and even though i know how to use it it might give some beginners choice paralysis
Ngl Sonatina Orchestra is not bad actually, ofcourse its sound is not incredibly prestigious as something you would pay money for, but for a free plugin it sounds pretty good Also, i feel like Toxic Biohazard is missing in here, first time i opened that shit up, i was on a discord call with a friend and i nearly died laughing
That female voice pack for 300 quid is amazingly bad. 8 years ago, you could’ve bought East West’s Holiwood Choir, absolute beast of a library with detailed multisamples of each choir section, work change tons of parameters, from sound design and mic placement, reverbs and choir sections positioning to amazing word builder - you could write down any phrase you want choir to sing and with little tweaking it would be absolutely amazing. Control over each syllable was massive, and it was used in movie and game production - it still is. Price? I think it was 250 quid. Btw, why are you mocking Dexed? 6OP FM is complicated there is no other way around it. Its a great free tool that can serve as dx hub, sending sysex of dx cartridges to other hardware synths with the similar 6op build. Tyrell is decent plug too.
The issue with EWQL stuff back then was they only worked with iLoK dongles, so you'd had to spend 25 bucks more (they cost 50 nowadays) to get the dongle if you didn't have it.
@@BrunodeSouzaLino well i had so many of rthose libraries as i needed them for work, and honestly i had ilok way back when from pro tools 10 i think. i dont think its a big deal, lots of developers use ilok. but its time to ditch that, just like steinberg ditched e licencer in usb format and its only soft licence now. even with the ilok price, these libraries were top class, still are, compared to this crap.

You can actually make great instruments with it, but it doesn't allow for making UI's that look good. You just throw a jpeg on it and position some ugly knobs over it. But whatever, dude, it's not a commercial product. It's just one guy in a bedroom making free software which is actually really usable, imo. I turned an old drone synth I have into a DS library with an ugly ass UI like that, but it sounds great and I use it all the time.
Most of these old romplers were actually made with Maize sampler.

To be fair to Dexed, it is a vast improvement over the UI of the synth it's emulating.
Except the DX7 had a ginormous print on the face of the synth showing the signal path for each mode.

Ngl Sonatina Orchestra is not bad actually, ofcourse its sound is not incredibly prestigious as something you would pay money for, but for a free plugin it sounds pretty good

That female voice pack for 300 quid is amazingly bad. 8 years ago, you could’ve bought East West’s Holiwood Choir, absolute beast of a library with detailed multisamples of each choir section, work change tons of parameters, from sound design and mic placement, reverbs and choir sections positioning to amazing word builder - you could write down any phrase you want choir to sing and with little tweaking it would be absolutely amazing. Control over each syllable was massive, and it was used in movie and game production - it still is. Price? I think it was 250 quid. Btw, why are you mocking Dexed? 6OP FM is complicated there is no other way around it. Its a great free tool that can serve as dx hub, sending sysex of dx cartridges to other hardware synths with the similar 6op build. Tyrell is decent plug too.
The issue with EWQL stuff back then was they only worked with iLoK dongles, so you'd had to spend 25 bucks more (they cost 50 nowadays) to get the dongle if you didn't have it.
@@BrunodeSouzaLino well i had so many of rthose libraries as i needed them for work, and honestly i had ilok way back when from pro tools 10 i think. i dont think its a big deal, lots of developers use ilok. but its time to ditch that, just like steinberg ditched e licencer in usb format and its only soft licence now. even with the ilok price, these libraries were top class, still are, compared to this crap.
@@earlsfield It's not an issue nowadays, but I remember a lot of complaints about the old iLok and people breaking them all the time or having to have multiples of them because they didn't have enough capacity to hold a lot of licenses.
