  • One of my Grail guns I never thought I would find available for sale in any condition let alone the best condition possible. I was able to buy the gun from the original owner along with a dozen other NIB Smiths as I worked as a gun-buyer for the nation’s largest volume firearms retailer. I quit my job and bought this gun.
    The 1980 production 4” 629 is the finest 4” .44 magnum stainless revolver ever made. Its quality rivals the Colt Anaconda in terms of material quality. and fit and finish. It is the only stainless .44 with recessed chambers and a pinned barrel, as that feature was phased out in 1981. Around 1,000 were made compared to tens of thousands in the 6” barrel. Typical used condition guns with or without boxes have sold at auction for $1,700+. About double what the same gun with a 6” barrel would go for.
    This gun also features all three original Smith boxes of the era with the wood display case, unmarked metal corner blue box, and serial matched outer cardboard box to hold the other two.
    A very special gun I am proud to call my own.

    I have a 4 inch 629 no dash, but I don't have any original boxes with it. I've had it longer than any other gun I own, and it will probably get handed down to a grandson. Beautiful revolvers.

    I understand the collecting and all, but no value to me if I don’t get to shoot it, just taking up space ....

      It’s better than money in the bank. It’s a easily liquidated asset not traceable by the IRS.
      BTW I have shot it now and it’s fantastic.

    Hello. I also have this beautiful revolver with the serial number: N 866 303, and I have a question: is the number 303 perhaps from a different thousand? What are your serial numbers, if it's not a secret? I'm curious if they follow a sequence like 866304, 866305, and so on.

    I bought one when I was 17 for $325 with 6 1/2” barrel. Loved that gun. I was young and dumb however and pawned it for $250 thinking I would get it back but never did. Big regret.

      Hey, $250 was a lot of money when these were new. Adjusted for inflation that's $670 which is about what I bought my first 6" 629 for seven years ago. IMO best 44 magnum revolvers ever made.

    I recently bought a 41 mag pinned and recessed with all three boxes as well. The cool thing is like you said it has never been fired except the 3 chambers in the factory with the faint burn ring on every other chamber. My presentation case is still in the original clear shrink wrap packaging, but I can't bring myself to open it to check the inside.🙂

      Nice find! I wish I had picked up one of the NIB Model 57’s I’ve come across. They’re always in so much better shape than the Model 29’s, never abused. 4” no dash in blue or nickel would be amazing.
      Don’t open that display case, I’ve never found one with the foam that hasn’t perished. It’s worth more sealed.

    I traded my over / under shotgun for this gun in the 6 inch barrel.... took it to the range once so far, and boyyyyyy she’s a shooter!👌👍

    I just acquired a pair of nickel plated model 29-2’s, both 4”. I’ve never handled/shot a nicer .44mag from any manufacturer.

      Sonny Gunz Yep 29-2’s and no dash 629’s are the best DA/SA .44 mags Smith (and most everyone else except Korth) ever made. Last engineering model before they got rid of pinned barrels and recessed cylinders.

    The odd thing to me is I have several 70's presentation cases and they are like the day they were made with no deteriation yet I see them rotted out on line all the time. Maybe the climate?.

      I don’t know, I’ve seen actual velvet cloth ones hold up (maybe they’re replacement cloth) but I’ve never seen a velvet foam lined case intact. This one was stored in a closet in a house on Lake Washington for 40+ years.

    Now that was interesting... 3 boxes. Never seen that before. Have seen either the blue Smith cardboard box or the wooden display box. Just not both for a given gun. Good video. It is fall here in the Pacific Northwest...

    • @HughesEnterprises
      @HughesEnterprises  6 років тому

      Gregg Woods I was truly amazed when the original owner showed us six of these cardboard boxes complete with NIB guns and blue boxes with display cases. I had never seen the cardboard shipping box in person.
      I wish I could have bought the 3.5” model 27 with the same 3 box setup we bought at the same time. We had it at $1,600 and I didn’t have the cash. Somebody got a real gem.
      This is also the origin of the “reproduction” and unserialized blue Smith boxes. The serial and model sticker always went on the cardboard box instead of the blue box when a display case was ordered.

    Absolutely THE most gorgeous and sought after 629 ever produced! The no dash pinned and recessed 629…..from 1979-1981, truly the pinnacle of fine firearm craftsmanship from Smith & Wesson! The Holy Grail is the 4” model (and rarest) followed by the 6” shown here. These guns will soon (if not close to being there now) be the highest priced wheel guns at every major auction house. If you can find one, GET IT!

      3ducs Man, that’s too bad. Had to the same with a mint Remington 03-A3. Even worse was I had the chance to buy it back a year later but couldn’t scrounge the cash.

    Beautiful, now get a Bianchi Bhl7 holster and carry that sixgun, it's what it was born for. I worked for an outfitter in Western Montana for a few year back in the late seventys and carried a blued model 29 4 inch in a Bianchi rig. best sidearm made.

    • @HughesEnterprises

      It rides in a highly tooled El Paso Saddlery 1930 Austin holster. It may be a collectors item but I intend to get every bit of use out of it I can. Holster actually came with the gun as a freebie from the assorted used holster bin.
      I have Bianchi 5BHL’s for 6” N frames, 6” Pythons, 4” Pythons, K, and J frame smiths of many sizes. Love those Bianchi holsters.

    I just picked up a 629, 6 ", wooden grips, no manual. Removed the grips and 1982 ink stamped on it. Was that the year made ? came with blue paper cardboard box. I was looking for a Ruger originally. Thanks

    • @HughesEnterprises
      @HughesEnterprises  5 років тому

      roll zolo As long as they haven’t been replaced 1982 sounds about right for a late 629 no dash. The grips may be a few months older than the actual gun and sometimes the other way around. Smith has been known to store serialized frames for years before they were finally assembled.
