I have a 629-6 with the 6.5 inch barrel. It is really accurate. I did make one modification: I installed the rubber grip that comes with X-Frame pistols. It fills my hand better, and really tames the recoil of heavy loads.
I realize this a very old thread but had to leave a comment. I too have # 3- 44 mag pistols and 2 -rifles. Levers. I carry either the S@W 629-6 or the Ruger Super Blackhawk 5 1/2 bbl. the other pistol is a Ruger Super Redhawk 7 1/2 it's a brick. Even in a shoulder holster or chest holster by Diamond D it's too much. i carry the 629 sometimes C.C. in the winter month's. Loaded with 44 specials. Woods carry and while I'm at my cabin 90% of the time it's the 629 with semi jacketed hollow points, 44 mag loads. When i was 19 Me and my cousin got ambushed by a female bigfoot. It was a life and death incident. She almost killed us both. And we were both armed. It ruined my life. It ruined my cousin's life. Changed us. At the time I owned #2 guns. Now I own #31. That's when I bought a 44 mag. And a single barrel shotgun, it was all I could afford at the time. My cousin never went back in the Mountains and still won't, he moved to the city afterwards. I'm petrified of the dark. I see them everywhere at dusk. Nothing kills like a 44 mag. Except my mountain rifle. An Alexander Arms Beowulf, 50 Beowulf. 10 in the mag 1 up the ass. It has an ACOG 3.5 yellow post sight. I also carry a Hawk made in India and a Cold Steel Frontier Bowie as well. And a couple illegal things in both front pockets. And I'm still afraid. But I can manage it. Till it starts getting dark. The biggest thing about a 44 mag is ,it's really all anyone needs . From Africa to the Alaska. But it's still a manageable round after practice. And it kills like the hand of God. So does the Beowulf. I recently bought a BFR in 30-30 7 1/2 bbl. It has less recoil than a 44 mag. But it's a Brick too. If you live on the east coast. Never go into the mountains of Va. without a 44 mag, and a shotgun or heavy rifle. I never thought Bigfoots were real either. Till one grabbed me. People say weren't you scared?? I was not. Not at the time. There wasn't time to be afraid. It was normal one second getting beat to death the next. Took me an entire month to get healed up. We both got fired. Both told everyone we were in a car wreck. I think what saved me is when she bit me. It sent me into a rage, a place I had never been, determined hate. Peace.
David after watching your great video I bit the bullet and bought a Smith & Wesson 629-6 of the same year as yours. Great video as usual, I could get that scratch out of the side of yours for you. Go from 500 grit wet sanding to 1000 grit wet, to 1200 grit, 1500 grit to 2000 wet sanding and poof it's gone! My model 66 no dash had some pretty bad scratches and dings on the sideplate and now it's perfect. of course once you do this to one spot you should do it to the whole revolver to give it a consistent look. It will have a near mirror shine by then and if you want you can use some Mother's aluminum and mag polish and give it a mirror finish, or just leave it alone because like you I'm going to carry mine in the woods and other places, if it has a scratch who cares it still functions beautifully (better than a Ruger!)
629-6 used at lgs today. Divorce sale the counterman said. Ouch. Well.. I am the proud new owner and ain't married, so it will have to pass from my hands a different way. Bought for bear country as i live in Wyoming and fish in Griz country. Nice video and i realize how old it is. The lock mechanism does not bother me. Took my 640 smith apart and after looking at it, that lock cannot fail and set itself in any way, shape, or form. S&W built a solid revolver; lock or not.
I was lucky enough to find a 629-1 8 3/8 barrel . It came with pacmyer grips . My gun shop had a set of goncalo alves target stocks for a Franklin. Made a big difference in shooting. Can't wait to take it deer hunting. Peace, my neighbor to the north. Stay safe.
The Hoagie rubber grips are WAY more comfortable than the wood ones. I had 'em on my 6" model 29-3 and they are AWESOME. As far as the quality of the weapon goes, the S&W 29 and 629 revolvers are the finest big bore revolvers on the market BAR NONE. The Ruger, Colt Anaconda and the Dan Wesson revolvers are all excellent, but the Smith and Wesson is the BEST.

I have smith and ruger revolvers. Out of the box the smiths seem to be smoother and a bit more slick… but after 2k+ rounds through my 4.2” .44mag Redhawk, the action is every bit as buttery smooth as my smith.
P.S. The most accurate of my 44's is the Ruger Super Blackhawk. It is a tack driver. Everyone who has shot it , has tried to buy it. One guy to this day still pesters me every time he sees me . He has like others offered way more than it's worth. My dad always said when you get a gun that shoots straight and you can't miss with it, never get rid of it. My oldest ugliest boy has already claimed it. The youngest best-looking boy ain't a bit happy about it either. Peace.

And my 44 shoots lights out, no matter who shoots it, so everyone wants a gun like that. If you're rich buy #2 vaqueros. I'll bet you a hundred dollars, both shoot differently. One may shoot to the left, one to the right, then you find one that hits the bull's eye every single time. Which one you want???? Peace.
Hey David, I have a S&W .44 Mag that has a 8 1/4" barrel and another with a 4" barrel. I can tell you from experience that with either gun you can use to hunt with. That being said, when you use the longer barrel the performance at any distance is far and away better. I love my 4" and it is a really a great six shooter that is outstanding in every way, but when you draw a bead on a white tail that is 80 yards from you I guarantee that if you have an opportunity to hit it where you want to hit, that deer is going into the freezer. One shot was all it took to harvest that deer. The confidence that 8 1/4" barrel gives me is real and anyone who shoots a handgun for any length of time will get that confidence also.
After owning several 629'S in 6 inch and 83/8 , the 4 inch is taking a little acclimation time, but I really am enjoying the practice time. A very well made and accurate revolver !!!
I am.just seeing this video. I bought this same firearm at a gun show from a private seller. I have not taken it to the range yet. Trying to find reasonable priced ammo before I go. Even though I have nkt shot it yet. I want a five inch barrel next.
My next purchase will be a 4" 629. I like what you said regarding durability and super hot reloads. Most people don't understand that 99% of published velocities are BS. My handloads are NEVER maximum. EVER. I strive for same hole accuracy, rather than trying to achieve some delusional ultra sonic velocity.

My good buddy used to have a Ruger Super Blackhawk in 44 magnum, 5.5" barrel. Cool looking gun and we shot it frequently, but (for me) it kicked like a mule and I had a terrible time shooting it accurately. Needless to say when he decided to get rid of it, I wasn't interested. Then not too long ago at the range, the gentleman on the next lane broke out his 629 classic in a 5" barrel and asked if I'd like try it out. I obliged his generosity and proceeded to put 6 shots right on target, in a nice group, very surprised by how different the recoil felt from buddy's old Blackhawk. Now, I freely admit, this was only from 7 yards away and shooting every shot in single action, but there's no way I could've shot a Super Blackhawk that well. It was a night and day difference. The Blackhawk, for me, always wanted to flip up towards the sky whereas the 629 had a firm but pleasant recoil straight back into my palm, then back on target. If my budget ever allows, I'll take the S&W all day long over the Ruger.
Only thing ruger doesn’t compare with is trigger and little fit and finish. As performance and durability ruger wins IMO. Yes I’m am the guy who shoots full house loads for 44 magnum. Just picked up the 629-6 performance center hunter Love it !!! Fine revolver.
I have a ruger redhawk 44 mag loved it until i had to send it back to ruger for repairs...looks like im goin to have to send it back again. On occasion the cylinder doesnt want to shut. It locks up...keep in mind the damn thing olny has about 200 rounds thru it...some tank...i was so mad the next day i went a baught a s&w 629 44 mag ...i think the ruger is going up for sale after repairs
Question - I just bought the highly rated S&W 629 with 6" barrel yesterday, SKU 163606. Is this a square butt or round butt? I need to know because I want to add the rubber overmolded Crimson Trace grips. The CTC model for round butt models is LG-314 and the one for the square butt is LG-313. I would appreciate it if someone could answer, Thank you
Anyone have any recommendations as to a few factory 44 magnum loads that are somewhat on the moderate side as to recoil ? On the opposite end what factory ammo do you guys find hot and hard recoiling ? Something a bit stronger then .44 Specials but not something extreme either. Thanks
@@JH-kc9tm No, only have 240 grain magnums and specials in my stockpile. Reason I am asking is my revolver is a Smith and Wesson 629-2 with 6" barrel. Its LNIB when I purchased it. I did not realize until after I purchased it the possibility of earlier Smiths without the Endurance package had some potential issues with hotter, higher velocity loads. I am not so much concerned with recoil as I am with creating some issues down the road with higher velocity, higher powered magnum loads that may put some undue wear and tear on my 629. I dont plan on shooting lots of magnums, just on occasion. Mostly .44 specials will be its primary diet.

I would like to try all the federal cartridges, but I never see them. I see Winchester a lot, and random other brands. If I come across Hornaday, i always buy as much as I can afford.
What's the hottest loads i can put in my pistol exactly the same as yours but I'm only finding 300 grain ammo and before i buy a bunch im curious if it will handle it

I agree that the Ruger is the stronger gun and will better handle those loads. The thing that I don't understand is why push a 44 magnum so far past it's intended design? Why not carry a 454 or 480 Ruger instead?
@@TheJurgisRud based on my research I found that the hard cast loads from buffalo bore and other such manufacturers in 454 casull were only slightly more powerful than the similar loading in 44 magnum. Also I decided that for my personal situation I would get more use out of a 44 mag and more availability of 44 mag ammo compared to 454 or 480 in my area of upstate ny. To be honest i feel 44 is probably the largest i can accurately shoot. I chose the redhawk because it can handle those loads for the limited number of times I am in brown bear country and more than adequate for regular pressure loads.
I wish they still made Stainless steel guns all stainless steel. They hammer and trigger being black look so cheap to me. Even my old Rossi and S&W 629 have stainless hammers and triggers. It throws it off for me.

I bought the 629. I handled it at a buddys house. It was that or a redhawk. The trigger sold me on the 629. So smooth and perfect.

I had a Ruger Redhawk until I got my S&W model 29 Classic with the 8&3/8” barrel. Then traded the Redhawk for a Colt 45 ACP. Never looked back.

Take the grip off and look at the frame either it's flat on the bottom square or rounded round. Simple

Have you tried going to a 180 grain bullet? Have you considered hand loading?

I went with the ruger redhawk for brown bear defense because the Smith's cannot safely fire the heaviest loads 340gr hard cast +P+
