Appreciate that you actually post your guest's socials and special links in the description, it's a small step that makes a big difference that a lot of other podcasts aren't willing to do.
For anyone listening who is also struggling with weight loss like Stavvy and the 2nd to last caller I cannot stress enough how important something Stavvy said. Your diet is the key to losing weight, you HAVE to eat at a caloric deficit or you will not lose weight. You need to make meals with low caloric densities so you eating more food volume wise but keeping your actual calories low. Things like cottage cheese with halved grape tomatoes that have been salt and peppered will fill you up and also be extremely light on calories. But again, I cannot stress how important your diet is. There is quite literally no point in working out if you're still eating like shit and attempting to do both at the same time can be extremely challenging if you have not done it before. I highly, highly suggest getting your diet in order (no fast food, no soda, lean meat and veggies will go a long way for you) FIRST before you attempt to start working out. Another very important thing Stavvy said was LEARN HOW TO COOK YOUR OWN FOOD. It is an absolute game changer when you know how to prepare healthy meals for yourself. While you're getting your diet in order you can do things like walk to get your exercise. shoot for 3,000 steps a day, then 5,000, then 7,500 and then 10,000. You will see a drastic difference in your body shape and energy simply from making sure you get out to walk around for a bit. Throw some headphones on and listen to the pod and walk as long as you can. I promise as it becomes easier for you you're going to want to go for longer every time. Get yourself an accountabilibuddy and hold each other accountable. Send nightly pictures of your dinner and your step count for the day and continue to push each other further. Lastly and arguably one of the most important things as well - don't beat yourself up and don't have a defeatist attitude. Just because you can't do something now doesn't mean you wont be able to do it in the future. If you take a couple steps backwards work on moving parallel and then moving forward past your misstep. We're human, we make mistakes, and it's okay. Tomorrow is another day to get back on track and another opportunity to prove to yourself how dedicated you are. If you can make it through 3 weeks of this then you'll be set, that's around the time it takes to form a habit of something. You will also see results within those 3 weeks if you follow these 3 things - 2,000 net calories per day or LOWER (total caloric intake minus calories burned), Walk daily, and and hold yourself accountable. Sincerely, someone who went from 235lbs to 172.4lbs as of this morning starting from 11/15/22 until today.
You can eat fast food and drink soda and still lose weight, as long as you maintain a calorie deficit. You don't have to give up treats completely. But yes, prioritizing less calorically dense, minimally processed foods will make it easier to maintain the deficit and has other health benefits.
This is all factual, down 65 pounds in the last 8 months purely from eating properly and not even on a crazy level and a basic amount of exercise. Jogged for 45 minutes 6 days a week for a while and now I have a job where I work with my body all day so I don’t really exercise outside of that all that much any more but the diet is the absolute biggest thing.
100% I've known so many people who get so discouraged that they aren't losing weight, sometimes even gaining, even though they exercise almost daily...but then they eat the same, if not MORE because they've been working out and burning calories which increases appetite. It's like they think exercise will cancel out everything they eat. It's such a fundamental law of nature, yet somehow, even people who are serious enough to put in the work to exercise still never got the memo. There's still a huge motif in our culture where if you want to lose weight, just hit the gym. If weight loss is your main goal, you could lose weight watching tv all day, just eat less. I see the same thing and misinformed thinking when it comes to people with unhealthy overweight pets. Owners think that if they take their fat dog for a slightly longer walk, they'll magically lose weight, or they blame the weight on the dog being lazy. Just give them less food! You're in COMPLETE control of their diet! Stop pouring a mountain of food into their bowl so you don't have to keep refilling it. Stop feeding them pizza crusts and ice cream because they beg and look cute eating it. Measure their food to portions that are recommended for their size and activity level. It's a pretty basic formula that also applies to humans. Obviously, exercise is great and will also benefit all species in the long run when it comes to general health and mobility, but we need to realize that, when it comes to weight, it's 99% determined by diet and food intake. Period.
I just started keto - for one it fixed my bowel problems, but above all I've dropped tons of weight and I eat as much as I want, I've gone down 4 sizes in jeans. In fact I don't even have much of an appetite now pretty much just eat because I have to. Walking is huge I have very active dog so that's just mandatory for me but I burn close to 1000 calories everyday just walking 10 miles ( walk fast it only takes 3 ish hours so 2, 1 and half hr walks) But anywho keto is great for dropping weight. Obviously should talk to a doctor to get blood checked etc make sure you're good to be on it, if so I'd say save yourself time and pain and just eat keto it's effortless. No counting calories and no being hungry. I'll eat a steak middle of the night sometimes as a snack lol.

@42:00 Actually, the reason Minnesota in general has so many Somali immigrants is because Minnesota is historically one of the very few states that welcome and support large groups of refugees like Hmong and Somali people. In the case of the Somali refugees, they recognized that history and the agencies that were ready and willing to help them transition into their new home. Afterwards, yes, those early refugees reported the success they had in Minnesota and urged their family members to visit.
