So for people purchasing this specifically for a recording workflow (like video podcasters) who may want to take advantage of 4K cameras, especially for repurposing the content to short form, it cripples it
We have a saying in French: what can do more can do less. It's better to have a tool you don't use to its full potential than one that restricts you. Even though I agree most people don't watch in 4k, there's quite a lot that do now and besides you're future proofing yourself. Only 1080p in 2024 is fairly unforgivable for a tool like that, let's be honest. Especially for that price.
You are 1000 percent right. For 99 percent of cases 4k is overkill and most consumers don't care about watching anything in 4k. The only people that care are gear nuts or people who shoot for Networks. So saying 1080p is a limitation is not an accurate statement for most people.
@@benjohnsoncreative You are using exaggeration for no reason. No 4k recording is standard as the Atem devices also don't support 4k recording. I have this switcher now, and love the functionality of the unit. I have livestreamed from it a dozen times already. However, I have had issues with the built in receiver for the Rode Wireless Pro mic I wear often. I have had it sound perfect, and I have had it struggle. I hope to get to the bottom of this, because otherwise I LOVE this switcher and the professional audio capabilities built in.
As far as I know Rode is aware of the issue and is working to resolve it. I’ve tested a beta firmware and it seems to be working so far. A full firmware update should hopefully be coming soon
I recorded my audio and video on separate tracks. When I tried to sync them in my editor I found out that it’s recorded as if it’s not the same recording. I can sync one part of the video perfectly and then play and the next part is no longer synced. Basically I’d have to chop the video up over and over to line the audio up with the video. This didn’t happen to me the previous video I edited. So frustrating. Is there ai for this??? Thank you again for all you do!
Could Rode integrate the video functionalities of the Rodecaster Video into the Rodecaster Pro 2 in the next product? That would create a killer all-in-one device, combining both video and audio capabilities. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be in a rush to buy this product. It lacks many intuitive features and feels like just the beginning of a promising future for similar products.
I really appreciate the honest take here. So many folks just want to praise Rode without thinking critically about the devices. As a professional podcaster, this device misses the mark for lack of 4k, timecode, and the inability to easily edit content in post (aka no XML file output)... So many little things they missed, and so many simple things to improve on.
And as a product specialist for a broadcast system integration company, i can say that if you are willing to pay upwards of 3-4K dollars, you can have all of those.
Yeah, lack of XML embeds accompanying the recordings is a bit cray-cray considering this unit's target audience. It almost begs the question, "Why then integrate ISO into the unit?" I bet this will be coming in a firmware update, the sooner, the better.
So far I have found not being able to add any media files that are larger than 1920x1080 that are pictures or graphics makes no sense. You also can't zoom in on any video source, the source is the source, sure you can move it around and resize it, but you can't move the source outside the limits of the video space nor zoom. Any webcam or usb camera then becomes just the direct feed and you cannot adjust the video in anyway. If I want to have a video file playing back and cut to and from it while it still plays, it will start from the start each time. There is no option to keep it playing, just a loop when it becomes active. These seem to me very simple things that can hopefully be patched in a much needed update soon
The biggest block for me is the lack of instant, front panel audio controls. If you need to pull down an audio source or turn down a mic quickly, you have no chance. I seriously think the title of the video is more of a click bait. The limitations mentioned are not like road blocks. Of course it is not 4K. Which other product offers 4K switching at this price point? Why would you connect an Action Cam to this device? This device is not to be used outdoors. Other thing that you mentioned about Comments etc. Those are very specific use cases. Definately not a RODE Block. Remember, ths is theri first version. More is in store.
1. 4K switching - Ecamm using basic capture cards at a fraction of the price (don’t even need a switcher) 2. Osmo isn’t an action cam, ZV1ii isn’t an action cam. Tons of reasons to connect action cams anyways for wide perspectives or just extra angles 3. It’s not specific, it’s a pretty basic live-streaming practice for creators who this is targeted to 4. They are very specific road blocks, that their main target could encounter 5. It’s a great first version for some, but these are limitations I find that a lot of creators could deal with that would keep them from it Just because they aren’t road blocks for YOU doesn’t mean they aren’t for others
I see the 'this isn't 4k' argument all the time on some of these low-cost switchers which are ultimately designed for those interested in livestreaming and that's where I feel the argument should end. There is no universe where a Video Streaming device will need to be 4k. it's very unnecessary. For folks who want to do high end multi-cam live production really need to look into the switchers designed for it, and invest accordingly. Unfortunately, the only way these streaming switchers will get into the 4k market is if the price tag follows them. I think some key features on the RodeCaster Video has perked my interests some, but not at the price point they have it at. The Video Follows Audio feature I find most useful, however, in most of my applications, I'd need more than 4 inputs and certainly more than the allotted audio inputs without some serous unconventional rigging.

I haven’t tried recording 1080 and uploading 4k, but I wouldn’t recommend that
I def like the all in one system of the RCV and if you’re going to be using it for clients I think you’ll enjoy the smaller lighter more mobile setup if it can meet your needs
@@benjohnsoncreative Thank you Ben, I appreciate the input.
I Have been trying to connect my sony fx30 and it wont connect. What am I doing wrong?
You have to switch the USBC streaming quality to HD, and/or your HDMI output resolution to HD
1. 4K switching - Ecamm using basic capture cards at a fraction of the price (don’t even need a switcher)
2. Osmo isn’t an action cam, ZV1ii isn’t an action cam. Tons of reasons to connect action cams anyways for wide perspectives or just extra angles
3. It’s not specific, it’s a pretty basic live-streaming practice for creators who this is targeted to
4. They are very specific road blocks, that their main target could encounter
5. It’s a great first version for some, but these are limitations I find that a lot of creators could deal with that would keep them from it
Just because they aren’t road blocks for YOU doesn’t mean they aren’t for others
To make this 4K will make this way more expensive.
Yes I'm sure that's true
Thank you for your common sense response. Some of these people are expecting to pay a $1200 for a device but want to get $3000 in features.
@@the2ndhandnews i agree.
Most people don't need 4k but for me it's almost always a nonnegotiable. It just depends on what you're trying to do.
