@@joebolt8873 Hey, Joe. I've heard of that before, but forgot what that does, or how it works. Could you elaborate on that? Do you tap it every time you move it a few clicks?
Would you ever consider buying a used Remington Autoloader, than upgrading it with the Aftermarket Parts that are made for the BAR Battle Rifle. That's including a Gas Adjuster.
Having worked in the Weatherby shop from 1983 to 1996, the Vanguard, made by Howa, always shot best when the barrel was bedded and bedded in the proper location. We tried and tried free floating, especially when we started the fiberglass and plastic stocks. These Howa barrels, which are highly accurate, need to be bedded. Find the right spot and you will not get near the degree of variance you experienced in this video. I also did some consulting with Howa after leaving Weatherby. They make a great product.
Adam, I think you should bed the action. I like Howa 1500 rifles and I like Boyd's Stocks .what I've found out was the stocks need to be bedded. A free floating barrel definitely improves accuracy.
I found WW II Mausers ('sporterized'), my Savages, and a few others to be quite sensitive to stock screw tension. The 3 Savages with poly stocks showed me this best. Also my Kimber 84 (7mm-08) shot horribly and I knew it was factory bedded. I backed out the screws and snugged 'em back up in steps. 2 1/2" at 100yd to 1 1/2", and it's ammo-fussy too.
@@johncmitchell4941 John , Last February I bought a Sporterized Mauser 98 in 3006 . The action was drilled and tapped. I have placed a time appropriate Weaver 2 x 7 scope on it . I will have to tweak the zeroing so far it's acceptable accuracy with Remington core loc.
Agree. Boyd’s stocks are fine, but really need to be bedded with something like Marine Tex or Devcon before they’re “complete”. ESPECIALLY with a higher recoiling cartridge like that 300 PRC. I’ve bedded several with JB weld which worked well, but I probably wouldn’t use that on any magnum cartridge. Use something with a high PSI crush rating.
Same in my experience. Had Howa’s in following calibers, .270, .30-06 and 6.5x55 all going into Boyds stocks. All of these were horrible until bedded, and I also added pillars. One could clearly see how the recoil lug was hammering the stock on the inside.
Had the same problem with my howa action in 7mm-08, in a boyds stock, off from a cadwell lead sled. Couldn't get a group less than 2in. Tried several different brands and weight. Took it out of the rest and just used a sand bag, and the groups shrank to under an in, with my best at .37in. Love your work.
First bolt gun that I have put together is a Howa 1500. Got a barreled action from Brownells and put it in a MDT chassis and I love it. It’s probably my favorite gun to shoot. It is extremely accurate too.
A couple things. 1, The rise in elevation could be from early barrel break-in and the bullets getting faster due to the reduction in friction as the new rifling gets smoother. (I don’t even know if that’s a thing) But give it a couple dozen more shots before loosing faith in the Howa. 2, CHECK THE SCOPE FOR MOVEMENT! My buddy has a 300prc Christensen that took us three sets of scope rings to get the scope to stay put. 3, I’ve known two Howa’s, both were .5” MOA. 4. It is definitely harder to get Magnum rifles to stack bullets. Most of my consistent tight shooters are sub 30-06.
I agree you may be suffering from barrel break-in. it seems like the bigger cal. Need it more?? I have never trusted the first box and sometimes the second, but if you used the same box for years could be a different story.
I think Howa has a special break in process that does make a bit of difference had 2 6.5 Grendel that I broke in a la their guidelines took a box of ammo and some time at the range the first I just shot groups right out of box did good .75 to .89 range but the one I did break-in was .45 to .75 so maybe it makes difference or they would not mention a break in go who tee whoooooo
Same on break in. I have a 30-06 HOWA, not great groups to start, but not bad. Got a 100 rounds through it and did a good cleaning on the barrel with copper solvent. It is a tight shooter now.
Yeah I think it might leave a residue in the barrel. My hand loaded a2700 didn’t leave the same crap in the barrel as the hornady ammo I had to use because it was only thing available in 338 win
You may want to pull the can off of it and see if it changes the barrel harmonics as well as bedding the action if that does or doesn't help. I have never been a fan of cans, but I bed every rifle I plan on keeping.
Many of these comments point to why everyone should own a torque screwdriver. It’s the only way to confirm if anything has changed after those initial shots from a new rifle and scope setup. And this is especially true for the larger calibers that produce greater recoil. Pick any system and when there’s a sudden change in performance, something has changed.
Mine had a real heavy , bad trigger, a peened action and a wood chip embedded in to the stock where the action fits, front action screw too long hitting the bolt so they left it loose, I fixed all that and put a better butt pad on. Spent a long time chasing zero and accuracy on that skinny barreled savage 30-06. Refined my rifle rest so the cross hairs don't move. Finally got a .675" group. Now I can shoot it three times and let it cool and do it again.
Possible reasons. Scope mounting, improper scope contact with rings. Shift at ring to base plate. Shift at base plate to action. Action, the barrel may be coming into contact with the stock, this is a no go on the 1500. The action to stock contact point may be inefficient at the recoil lug, the 1500 uses a square style recoil lug and skim bedding is almost always required for precision work.
Great video! Have you seen that 245 gr. bullet, (I think it's Berger if my memory serves)? That would be my Elk load 😊 I just need a 300 PRC rifle 😂 (You really oughta be pretty happy with anything under a one inch group. That .77 inch group is some damn fine shooting of a rifleman and rifle, scope and mounts! Keep up the great work you're doing. But i do understand loving some ½ inch groups 👌)
I've had new scopes drift after big adjustments and then settle down, a 5-6" move is pretty large. Great video in any case looking forward to your follow up. 💪😎
Shoot another 20 to 30 rounds and then check how the barrelled action is sitting in the stock. After you see the high and low spots from contact with the stock, you will have a better idea when bedding the rifle. I have 2 Howa 1500's. One in 300 BO and the other in 404 Jeffrey, a custom build. Great guns.
Watching you get really into shushers over the past year or so, combined with recent developments, made me pull the trigger on my own. Just got Griffin Bushwhacker 46. Have it on my 350 Legend carbine, hoping to hit the range this weekend to chrono and group some hand loads.
Good honest post WTW, I've been running howas for years now, they are ammo fussy, but will group sub moa without too much work, down to 0.5 if you put the work into them.
Love the sighting-in and accuracy testing videos! I think .75 and .99 is pretty good and I would be happy with that in a 300 PRC. I get where you're coming from, with the recent accuracy you've had out of your other rifles. I also understand that if you want to launch the 300 PRC missile, you want to launch it at long, long range and 1.5 inch groups are not ideal for that. I hope the Eldx shoots better or some other ammo shoots better for ya.
Get you 2 lead shot bags on that sled who….I remember when the 1st ones came out and my uncle still has it and old bags of shot that weigh a ton..S&W 30-.06 with 3x9 redfield he still has I 1st used round 95-96 I guess…up here in Hatfield&mcoy country..

My actions came loose after a number of shots. Add weight the sled as you can see your lead sled twisting to the right after some shots Try a group without the can and try a muzzle brake if recoil is too harsh If you really want to shoot that rifle long range buy a chassis and get the rifle to fit you. Add weight to the rifle to lessen that recoil if it’s going to be for long range. Try different brands and bullet weights if you are staying with factory ammo. Bullets will speed up after barrel break in so don’t pay too much attention just yet. That 300PRC Barrett you shot is a different league but you can still build that Howa to be nice! What is the twist rate on the Howa? Great videos keep up the great work WTW
it might help if you bed the action, got to be wurth a try, make sure the barrel is free floating etc. to me it would be interesting to see if it does make a differance, with a pencil barrel on a powerfull cartridge it needs all the help it can get, and then theres the ammo.
Hey wtw been getting into precision and long range shooting the last couple years. Something i noticed bout prc chambered rifles, each caliber and rifle has one load that it absolutely loves, others itll be sub moa still. But a problem i see with them is when barrels get hot those groups open up alot. So 1. If you reload great it makes it easier to find what it likes. 2. Theyre great for precision as long as its not getting hot. This is things I’ve noticed and things ive learned from guys who’ve been shooting prcs for years
Sometimes with Boyd stocks you have check the stock fit with a dollar bill. I would wager the stock is not floating inletted correctly or torqued down. I have to clean out the recoil lugs as well. I have a Howa Hogue 1500 300 Win , took it Elk hunting in Pa this year.
You ,might want to have a gunsmith check the throat diameter, it should be .308. This is critical for maximum accuracy. If it is not, the bullet can line up slightly off center and cause accuracy issues.
you Gotta get some good handloads in 300PRC. My Christensen Arm 300PRC does the same thing your Howa did with Hornady factory match ELD-M. Now I shoot handloaded, annealed ADG brass, 230gr A-Tips, pushed with Retumbo powder. Experimented with seating depth in 0.01" increments to find what my rifle liked best. Consistent sub moa groups now with 230gr Atips being pushed at 2920 fps MV. Its a 1,500 yard monster now. may get some 250gr Atips to try that heavy bullet for windy conditions. In my experience with one 300PRC rifle, Hornady's factory 300PRC Match is crap for accuracy. Don't know why.
Just a thought. It’s bouncing that sled around a lot so maybe some weight would help. It’s really hard for me to get small groups with large cartridges 🤷🏽♂️. That is moving before the bullet leaves the barrel so that seems to matter.
Just my 2 cents ..300 prc is a great round..but a heavy recoil round. I know it may be a cardinal sin, but I always use loctite blue on scope mounts and rings and torque them just to make sure they don't loosen. If u read the wheeler fat wrench instructions, their torque recommendations they reference are based on using loctite blue.
With a thumper like that you really need to bed the action into the stock. I don't know if it's got pillars or not, but that might be a good addition too.
I didn't know who you were until I saw a wsm video you did then I saw you with Cortina and some other youtubers. Cool content and great price break on the arken. PS I'm ordinary an action off Brownell in 300prc this month so please take this down until I get mine so they don't sell out like the howa did.
Last bran new gun i had took a 100 rounds to break in to stay on taget. And it come into.643 and added tuner brake i shoot consistantly at .433 at 1000 yards with 5 rounds. Yea im saying ot is imposible also but it isnt.
There's a reason I pulled the 300Prc pencil barrel off my Howa and sent it off to get a 7 PRC barrel on it. Even after a couple hundred rounds it wouldn't shoot consistently. 7Prc had better ballistics and less recoil. It was kind of a no brainier.
While you were letting the barrel cool after your first group, was the ammo out on the bench in the sun, or did you tuck that away in the shade too? Maybe hornady's match ammo is loaded with a real tempature sensative powder and it got hot sitting in the sun. Maybe thats why the next 2 groups were high and more inconsistent 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
Do a 50 round break-in on the barrel before you panic over group sizes. One of my guns didn't settle down until over 100 rounds. New barrels can act funny till all the machining burs slick out. I bought an Arken scope, very happy, thanks for the heads-up.
I have had trouble with my suppressor loosening as the barrel heats up on my howa. Messes with the barrel harmonics and spits your shots all over the target. Now i know to check it. I have had frustrating days at the range with my rifle not grouping well, when i know it shoots better. Only to realise the suppressor has come loss when i go to pack up for the day.
1rst thing, Unless you want a broken extractor in the near future, stop chamber loading your rounds. Howa actions are pretty bad about that. Those extractors aren't made to snap around the case head, they are made to be fed into. 2nd, I am also a big fan of bedding Boyd stocks. They are great budget stocks and you definitely get your moneys worth but just about any action is much better served with a good bedding job. And as one other poster noted, I have also found Howa actions to be VERY sensitive to screw torque values. Only action I have ever seen as sensitive was an old Weatherby I bought years ago. Damn near wrapped that thing around a fencepost. Couldn't get better than 2.5" group after 100 different combinations. Finally landed on screw tension. Once I found the correct torque (called a smith that specialized in Weatherby rifles) damned if that thing doesn't shoot .5 to .75 and will eat about anything from 180 grain to 225gr !!!
I have had bad luck with the howa 1500 barreled actions from Brownells. I already sent back a 6.5 prc carbon fiber wrapped. Received the new replacement from Legacy Sports International after 4 months and it shoots worse than the first. I recently purchased 2 more barreled actions from Brownells in 6.5 prc and 7 rem mag stainless steel this time. I will take the 7 rem mag to the range this week to see if that one does any better than the other lol
@@WHOTEEWHO glad it worked for you. Looking forward to your next video on it. I will try to record a few videos of mine. I tried 3 different factory ammo and hand loads. The stock from stockys is pillar bedded and everything else is torque to spec. At this point I want a refund or an exchange for something else. I asked them the last time if they could shoot the replacement before they sent it to me. It costed me 100 for the receiving fee and background check and will cost me another 100 once I sent this defective one back to Legacy Sports International. I tried with and without muzzle break. I have yet to use my borecam to see if anything is off inside the barrel.
I've noticed when I leave my ammo in the sun to shooting in the shade and letting my barrel cool down and wat temperature it is outside vs wat hornady clams there information against mine gets me better consistent results as wat u get or a little better some days in the sun do better not all the time every barrel and maker for ammo comes up different
I wouldn't condemn it yet until it is broken in and you have tried some other loads through it. Also play around with torque settings on action screws a bit.
Hey Adam if you had to choose a cartridge for 200 yards and in for hunting whitetail in the eastern United States what would be your choice. I appreciate your hard work for these awesome videos 😎
I'll buy a new rifle months from now and this set up looks 👌 awesome. Tho I think 338 lapua still has my attention 🤔. I have 6 months to decide. Let's keep on watching videos to see what life has to offer 😀.
I've been watching this Podcast for a couple of months and does the " CAN " on the barrel mess up the accuracy in any way ? Especially , on the " Sporter Weight barrels .
Im no expert.. but I do have an addiction to everything to do with guns, bows, and hunting. The answer is it depends. Often times the reduced recoil will help you shoot better, but alternatively in some barrels it may negatively impact your barrels harmonics.. you usually just have to experiment a little to know how your suppressed rifle will shoot with your intended ammunition.
Looking forward to your ammo tests with this one. Frankly, for a too long spaghetti barrel with a magnum cartridge the precision with the ELD-M isn’t that bad. Most of the 300 PRC tests I have seen didn’t produce stellar results. And the cold bore shift isn’t a surprise with that barrel profile.
I’ve got a 10 year old Howa 1500 in .308, it shoots great groups, an inch or better at 100 meters, nothing special just the Hogue stock it came with. Some rifles perhaps are anomalies and shoot well no matter what they’re fed, I believe my Howa is one of them. I’ve taken at least 30 hogs with it, probably more than that and the body count will climb as I wait each year for the cooler mornings when the hogs get careless…. Because I dont.
Some of my high powered rifles consistently start losing accuracy when they are not cleaned after 8 to 10 rounds. Maybe your rifle gets dirty fast and is dirty barrel sensitive.
Small sample set, wide results. Is finding higher precision more important than taking a clean kill at 100 yards? Silly question if the target is further away.

@@ianstrachan9410 yeah I've heard of them. Looks like a cool gadget. It gets really hot here idk if it would work
That's why I like a medium/heavy barrel on everything
Possible reasons.
Scope mounting, improper scope contact with rings. Shift at ring to base plate. Shift at base plate to action.
Action, the barrel may be coming into contact with the stock, this is a no go on the 1500.
The action to stock contact point may be inefficient at the recoil lug, the 1500 uses a square style recoil lug and skim bedding is almost always required for precision work.

My friend did you be and pillar your stock to the barreled action? I always use devcon steel when I bed rifles.
Nice job!
You ,might want to have a gunsmith check the throat diameter, it should be .308. This is critical for maximum accuracy. If it is not, the bullet can line up slightly off center and cause accuracy issues.
Did you leave the ammo sitting in the sun while the rifle was cooling? That will raise chamber pressures and velocity.
Nope
you Gotta get some good handloads in 300PRC.
I have a browning x bolt western long range that loves the hornady ammo. 300 prc is a monster
My 300 prc cva xt loves the 190 grain cx hornady outfitter all copper bullet
That's terrible I got better groups with my 225 match then u did best was the 190 outfitter
Looking good
I’m thinking of getting a 300 . Not sure which one !
Have a howa in 6.5prc and it shot just like that, it was very inconsistant, had the stock bedded and it was super accurate after n bed the action
Just a thought. It’s bouncing that sled around a lot so maybe some weight would help. It’s really hard for me to get small groups with large cartridges 🤷🏽♂️. That is moving before the bullet leaves the barrel so that seems to matter.
Sometimes, barrel break-in is a real thing. Give it some more rounds down range and see if it settles in.
The paralex could be giving you trouble I'm not crazy about the long range scopes with adjusters on the knobs you might give that a try
Hopefully it’s the ammo. I had a Sako .243 that shot like that with cheap ammo but was a laser with Federal Premium ammo.
Don't worry about ammo yet. Brand new barrel!
That is one nice looking stock. The first group started off good. Maybe try some different ammo? Action screws still tight?
Everything tight. Stay tuned. It is the ammo
@@WHOTEEWHO Roger that. Well, more ammo tests!
The Howa 1500 sure looks good in that stock 👍🏻
I know u put the rifle in the shade but did u also place your ammo in the shade ? Warm or hot powder will perform strangely
With a thumper like that you really need to bed the action into the stock. I don't know if it's got pillars or not, but that might be a good addition too.
Still a fun and enjoyable video 👍👍
Top gun 👍💯
Try sliding a dollar bill between barrel and stock hot and cold and see if there's a difference. difference.
I didn't know who you were until I saw a wsm video you did then I saw you with Cortina and some other youtubers. Cool content and great price break on the arken. PS I'm ordinary an action off Brownell in 300prc this month so please take this down until I get mine so they don't sell out like the howa did.
🤣🤣🤣
Put it all in thr shade
Do a 50 round break-in on the barrel before you panic over group sizes. One of my guns didn't settle down until over 100 rounds. New barrels can act funny till all the machining burs slick out. I bought an Arken scope, very happy, thanks for the heads-up.
I'm a big arken fan
This one works great. Likes different ammo
I have a Ruger precision rifle in 300prc. It groups under 3/4 in with both match and precision hunter from hornady. Better than that with handloads
I'm sure if it doesn't group good with one set of boolots you'll find another it does
Bed the action, it looks like you have movement. I always bed my actions and check the clearance down the barrel
That's tough. Probably 7mm rem mag
@@WHOTEEWHOthx keep up the good work
If you can get that in a heavy barrel it may stabilize way better
I'll buy a new rifle months from now and this set up looks 👌 awesome.
Tho I think 338 lapua still has my attention 🤔.
I have 6 months to decide.
Let's keep on watching videos to see what life has to offer 😀.
You won’t regret the Lapua.
The 28 Nosler has my attention for next year.
Good luck mate, Australia
The loading with that i wouldn't go long range with that ammo
Recoil my ninja….hard to group them light boomers..wicked round
Stay tuned
Something is moving given the shift from the groups.
Cool gun bro!
💪💪
Bed stock, then break barrel in ,
Then try Hammer Hunters HHT .
Should wake it up
New barrel maybe? Try cleaning it and doing it again.
Have you been able to get your hands on the new Christensen Arms Evoke 7PRC yet?
Nope
That looks like a thin barrel for a suppressor. Try regroup without suppressor see how the harmonics change the bullet impact.
Counting yours I know 2 rifles that don’t like the match ammo. I’m stacking 8-10” groups at 1400 yards out of mine with the 225 match
Nice
Could it be 100 yards is to close for that round ,is it stabilized yet
Ever try lapping the rings ? Desert Dog has a really good video on it .
Nah. These days not really necessary
Great show my friend and your the best 👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏🙏
Thanks for watching!
Hey mate. Do you run the barrels in on these Howa rifles? There is a process to do these and it does work
I don't know what you mean by run the barrel
Yes!
Small sample set, wide results.
Is finding higher precision more important than taking a clean kill at 100 yards?
Silly question if the target is further away.
