4 Underrated Film Cameras You Should Buy in 2024

- A short list of some film cameras I’ve been enjoying this year, the prices on most of these are sub $100 despite the quality they bring to the table. These aren’t investment cameras just some easy and affordable entry points into film photography
I have the Pentax ME and the ME Super and always shoot in auto since I acquired them in the 1970s. Now I’m excited about the new Pentax 17.
I am so excited I just ordered today a Pentax Spotmatic SP rated EX condition from KEH for $100. I already have the 55mm F1.8 lens that was given to me years ago. And I have been really wanting a camera for. And I just ordered a boatload of film for the summers shooting so I am ready.
I have a Ricoh KR10 plus with the 50mm f 2:lens and use it on auto mostly. I love that it has an L setting to lock the shutter and turn off the meter.
I also have a Pentax Spotmatic with the wonderful 55 mm 1..8 lens

I appreciate the shout out. Nice job on ramping up the channel. Glad the lens found a good body pair. There's something about the Miranda D I just love, and yes, looks, ergonomics, waist level option and brand typography are all a part of it. But I've also taken some *great* images with it, which really seals the deal. It's not a daily shooter, but it does hold a solid spot in the rotation.
You make an excellent point about the cheapness of the point and shoot making them more fun 😅. I think I like the look of the canon best though. The Pentax booklet is really neat. I’m a sucker for all these older cameras.

I have the Demi EE17, but the meter has never worked. I have taken some great shots with that thing! Super love it.
Konica tends to be a very overlooked SLR. Picked up quite a few, locally, for $20 to $30 (2024 finds). Hexanon lenses are very sharp. Do you have much of an opinion or comment about them?

The Miranda is a solid camera. So many features for pennies. Good reccomendation.
Totally agree on the point and shoots. I shoot Pentax and have a small collection of frugally acquired Pentax point and shoots. I get very decent results. And all my Pentax slr's were frugally acquired as well and work great. I'm in PDX so I especially enjoy your content.
I'm with you and adore the MX. The ME (I have an SE is a very capable camera - you just need to have your head in the right space when using it.
LOVE the point about point and shoots. I took a long hiatus from shooting and getting a Pentax IQZoom160 at a thrift store for not a lot of money kind of sparked it back up for me. When I first started taking pictures it was kind of inconceivable to show up to anything serious with a point and shoot . And it seems like now a days it's had a bit more of an appreciation, but with it also an inflation in cost. I think they seem great and fun, but I wouldn't want to spend more than.... 20ish 30ish bucks on one... anything after that I personally would want something else. I did buy a Minolta himatic e for 50 bucks and that was that thing I would buy if I wanted to spend more on what's essentially a point and shoot
I bought several Miranda cameras, and all were well made. But a few of the Miranda lenses I have seen had issues with linkages, loose screws, and just falling apart. Maybe the bodies and lenses were made by different shops.
I have a Miranda Sensomat and I agree they are really nice looking.. mine broke though, wondering if to have it fixed or not.

Have the ME, ME super and actually all the M series Pentax SLRs and all the K series too . I’m just missing the LX. I have a problem . Hadn’t seen that Miranda before it does look gorgeous I really like it’s looks/ design too
I just got that first canon but I think it needs fixing, I can’t seem to open it! If you could do a video about it that’d be awesome man 🙏🏻
The Pentax ME with the 40 mm F2.8 pancake lens makes it quite the tiny SLR setup.
I love Mirandas and have several. That said, the C is probably my least favourite. Partly because it was actually a downgrade of the previous model, and partly because mine had a faulty advance lever (it wasn't meshed properly with the adjoining gear). I fixed it, but it didn't seem like a very strong mechanism.
Damn!! Now I want a Canon Demi. Found one on ebay and I'm a bout to pull the trigger. I already own a Canonet 2B, but the Demmi looks awesome

i bought a Demi EE17 a while ago, everything's good on it but the shutter is stuck open. I can't for the life of me find any kind of repair manual or video for it sadly, so I don't know how long it'll be til i can use it. I really want to though because its such a perfect cute lil camera and I'd love to use it as my main travel film camera.

The Ricoh FF-3 AF Super is very similar to that vivitar. I bid on it on eBay for a dollar not expecting to win. Next thing I know I have fully functional 80s camera for $1.

Every time you mention the ME I always mention the ME F I have with corresponding AF lens. Unfortunately the shutter is locked but I hope to get it repaired someday as it's in lovely condition.
I was given a free broken ME F (no lens). I tore it apart and fixed the shutter/mirror problems but still have some issue with shutter speeds. Only fires now on mechanical speed so must be an issue with electrics / shutter itself. Someday will open it again and try to fix fully.
@@neocogent5153 Braver than me, I took the base off and stared at internals and put it back on.
P.S. that Vivitar Tec 45 is the same thing as a Panasonic C600 … non US people might find that easier to find

I would like to suggest the Pentax MG since you've included the ME. Both are similar with their size and automatic functions, and shooting with the MG has been really fun for me.
God I feel like the only person on earth who used the Pentax Super Program lol
The canon is a sharp camera but pricey. I have a Vivitar Tec 45.
30mm in half frame is the equivalent of 43mm in terms of full frame FOV

60 years later Pentax releases a plastic copy of the Canon demi EE17 for 4x the used street price. What a world!

I suggest that you mute the hands -- at least a bit. The hands moving parapatetically within the frame seems like an affectation, and a detracting and distracting one at that. A net negative, IOW.
