This was the first world heavyweight title bout ever held in Germany.
Mildenberger was the first southpaw to fight for the World Heavyweight Title.
Ali was a 10-1 favorite.
There was a crowd of about 40,000.
Introduced in the ring prior to the bout were former World Heavyweight Champions Max Schmeling, Joe Louis, and Ingemar Johansson.
Ali and Mildenberger wore six-ounce British gloves.
Mildenberger's left eye was badly cut in the sixth round and almost completely closed by the eighth round.
Mildenberger was knocked down in rounds five, eight, and ten.
Referee Teddy Waltham of Great Britain stopped the bout at 1:28 of the 12th round to protect Mildenberger from further punishment.
The fight was scored by rounds. At the time of the stoppage, Referee Teddy Waltham had Ali ahead 7-2-2, and Judges Felix Ohlet and Nat Fleischer (editor of The Ring magazine) each had Ali leading 7-3-1. The Associated Press had Ali in front 9-1-1.
One of the promoters said Ali would collect a purse of about $300,000 and Mildenberger about $100,000 of the total gross of approximately $750,000 from the gate receipts and television.

Thanks for the upload, great to watch the two good friends Max Schmeling and Joe Louis in the beginning. Ali showed respect towards Mildenberger prior to the fight and after. So did Karl by calling him Ali and not Clay. To the question if Mildenberger was a bum? I think the Ali of '66 was a peak version of the greatest Boxer of all times and a bum couldn`t last almost 12 rounds against him, even coming at him mostly the whole fight, as a good challenger is expected of. B.t.w. Mildenberger was the European Heavyweight Champion for four years ('64-'68) and retained his title six times which is a good feat I think. This was a great fight with a great Champion and a worthy Challenger.

Max Schmeling our german heavyweigt boxworldchampion was announced too, jumping as a young man into the ring and helped his best friend and former opponent, Joe Louis, whom he once in 1936 knockout in the 12 round. In the return, Max was the bad "NAZI" german boxer and lost in the first round. Max Schmeling is the longest lived heavyweight boxchampion of all Times. He used to live til his 100 year! We are very proud of our great humanitarian and boxchampion Max Schmeling. I met him in 1975 as a young boy in his restaurant "Hollendter Hof" in the north of Germany, where he lived his later life after world war II together with his beloved wife Anny Ondra, an actress from Prag, Tschechoslowakei.

I was really shocked as I read, " we move ahead to the 5th round." I stopped, wrote the coment and up he was. Why? Cause it was Mildenbergers best round.
