Glad you got the card Chip. Found it at a store after you talked about it on an episode. I did so many laps looking for you while my son was playing lol.
yall really need to timestamp this
Why?
Or you could just watch it.
It’s a fair request.

Can’t finish but there’s a couple lol
Go back to the way we used to do events. Day 1 best of 1. Pick how many rounds of that you want. Cut to day 2 as a top 32/64/128/256 etc and make those matches single elimination best of 3.
Revert ties to how they used to be handled. They don’t…winners in time are based solely on prize advantage after the Turn 0 rule concludes. Initiate sudden death/first blood if prize advantage still can’t be obtained.
I’ve played since 2007/2008 and I still can’t figure out why they ever changed this.
But I also think they need to start hosting multiple regionals on the same weekend to break up attendance. 3000+ players in an event is absurd and not sustainable imo.
Thanks guys for the weekly entertainment. Appreciate it!
Hey this is Jim O'Briens son, my dad says thanks for the kind words and the constructive criticism he had a blast in Louisville.
Your dad is a legend
It's weird that as a Louisville local player that only got here last year, I know Azul has been to Louisville for cups because it's part of my store's lore that azul and pram came to the very first league cup they ever hosted.
Regarding match up luck at tournaments, Cyrus (the 2023 NAIC winner) played Rapid Strike and faced zero Mew VMax decks the whole event. About as lucky as you can get considering that was its worst match up (until Roaring Moon ex released)
Regarding ties, I agree. To avoid ties in Pokemon Go, the winner is whoever’s team has more HP remaining. In VGC, it’s whoever has more mons remaining (then total team hp). In many fighting games, it’s whoever has more HP remaining. In Yugioh, it’s whoever has more life points remaining. Etc.
Because the Pokemon tcg currently has no way to force your opponent to increase their number of prize cards remaining, there is no reason not to implement “the winner is whoever has fewer prizes remaining when time is called”. Any existing such cards can be banned, and they can just NOT make cards like that in the future.
They had this rule up until 2015 when wailord ex got into a top 8 and lost because of it. It gives fast aggressive decks an unfair advantage over control/setup decks that otherwise are winning the matchup.(ex: control vs zard. If control discards all of Zards energy zard is struggling to win that matchup. But if the zard player took a ko against a pidgey then time is called. He would win even though they had no other win condition.
Tldr: basing who won on prizes is not a good idea because it creates a unfair advantage for certain decks over orhers
@@andrewhaga1792play a better deck is the answer no?
@@andrewhaga1792 sounds to me like control decks should include actual win cons then(?) If I took a mill deck to a tournament with the old Prize Rules and lost, people would not say the tournament rules are unfairly stacked against me. They would say I need to play a deck that wins faster.
I don’t see how that magically changes if I start calling my deck control instead of mill, since many ptcg control decks win via deck out.
@@SolitaryDustazuls not gonna give you a gold star for saying cringy things you think he would agree with in the comments. That kind of thinking is just so unhelpful. Whoever makes the rules didn't like how abusable the system was so they changed it. If the answer to everything was just "get good kid" we'd still be living in the Stone Age
@UncalibratedAimbot What is an actual win con? Do you mean a pokemon that can attack and take prizes? If that's what you mean then I disagree with you. One actual win con is through a deck out.
What my original comment was trying to say was that the tournament should not favor one way to win or the other.
To your second point where if you took a deck with the old prize rules and lost, then, yes, I agree that you could have played faster or slower in your games as to avoid losing. You also would have made the choice to bring a deck knowing you might lose to prizes and would have to be ok with that.
Here are some chapters as y'all have been asking. Note that these are Spotify generated that I retitled. If a new episode comes out and you want to skip to a specific topic I would check there although I'm not sure if autogenerated captions are a spotify premium feature.

The kicker is at 2048 because it's a power of 2. Swiss rounds are supposed to be calculated by powers of 2.
Nice, it reminded me of a computer driven number
is there a reason why pokemon doesn't do bigger top cuts? The feeling of going x-2 at a 2000+ person event is great but no reward for it because the top cut is so small.
Chip Richey with the most throwback guess that flavor text. Its also Base Set Charizard's flavor text
WOAH! You're telling me that I get to wake up to a new podcast episode!?!??!?! Oh it's gonna be a great day!
As someone who has gone to many regionals in other card games and having Louisville be my first Pokemon regional, my largest gripe over the scene was the amount of slow play in the game that occurred during my rounds. I swear my first 4 rounds never made it to game 3, my opponent’s would play slow in game one and if they did win game one, they would play even slower in game 2, however if I won game one, my opponent would keep hounding me to “play faster”. This was such a big turn off to the tournament scene to me as a new player to the competitive scene, I’m not saying you have to complete your whole turn in 30 seconds to a minute, but if you are taking 20 seconds to think about every single action you are making and are making 15 actions a turn for a total of a 5 minute turn and the game lasting 3-4 turns, that is 20 minutes wasted on just my opponent’s turns. I’m typically not the kind of person to call a judge, but I will definitely not be making the same mistake again next regional I attend and I will be calling a judge every time my opponent takes longer than 20 seconds to make an action outside of the first initial prize/deck check of turn 1. The biggest reason this aggravated me is also because I am used to the clock with the timer being on display for everyone to have fair access to, not just having a clock showing you the time in the middle of the room and if you weren’t staring at the exact second they called the round to start then you have no idea how much time is truly left on the clock, I was definitely not a fan of this as I felt this also encouraged a lot of players to take advantage of this system and allow them to slow play even more so.
David Tomhave-Alexie made top 8 at the Fresno Regional 2023.
He played Darkrai Vstar and hit 5 Mew/Genesect in Day 2.
Can someone explain all the Twitter drama in detail? Annoying to talk about something for that long without explaining what even happened.
ah yes, the azul from the elitist discourse thumbnail again - a classic
When David Cohen' magneboar defeated Ross Cawthon's Truth for the world championships, i believe David faced only typhlosion decks (his best matchup) until he made top 8.
Typhlosion reshiram was a rediculously popular deck for that tournament (i think i remember 30-50% play rate?), so it wasnt super lucky but it was remarkable.
Chips been leading the flavor text so long feels like it needs a refresh loke being divided into “seasons” leading up to each IC
I remember one DQ where the majority of social media sided with the judges. I know the judge who handled the initial call, he's still not talking about that call.
Louisville here, we are "South", but also pretty mid-western. I'm blown away you didn't have sweet tea catered, because it's everywhere here, just like biscuits and gravy.
A couple years ago, a guy was playing Turbo Darkrai and I think made top 8 by facing an insane amount of Mew Vmax players.
Ky is both South and Midwest. Basically the split is around Lexington/ i-75.
Take japans system of ties count as loss for both players. Gentlemans suck like chip said

Thank you. Can't believe it takes almost an hour for them to get into the titled content of their video. Dear lawd!
I cannot believe it took Azul so long to get to Charizard
My guy Charizard has had that Pokedex entry since Red and Blue. Easiest 4pts ever.
Im currently going to college in Lexington (eastern kentucky) and I think that most people here think of it as southern even though it isnt geographically.
In Peoria last year Charizard was 15% of the meta. I hit Chien Pao 6 times in 15 rounds. Speaking of absurd numbers of one deck match up roulette.
Kentucky is Midwest because they have white castles 😂
What happens if day 1 and day2 records were separate? Like people make day 2 and then they can just focus on it? I might be missing something.
Okay I’ve been listening to Azul talk about how to register for a few weeks - he’s right. I’d love to go to a regional but had no idea how to do that until I watched these videos. Let’s say I want to play Baltimore? How the heck do I do it?
+3 points on flavour text, at 94 now
I feel like the companies investigation into whoever they're restricting or banning from events should be kept in house. Because whatever comes of it you're still going to have your own opinions. If they release what they saw, what they did, how they investigated, this just keeps the story going for what? For more people to talk about based on more of their own opinions on whether they feel the company did it right or wrong? What's the point? Their outcome of the situation is the outcome. Outside feelings on the matter don't matter. Sure it's something to talk about and maybe gain a better understanding of the process they take to get to their decision, but that shouldn't impact you or other players if you're not involved. I don't really know what was said, or who reported who to get these individuals suspended from events, but the fact still remains their suspended. Whether I agree or disagree, that's still the only fact staying.

rotom could fit well into banatte gardevoir item lock because youre already running luminous for munkidori
Twitch is botched for watching TCG. Predictions aren’t consistent and Azul was consistent with predictions. Also some words, not bad are banned, I couldn’t say Gardey Army for some “your message is not unique enough” lol the f does that mean. As a viewer not having predictions for each match through the main PTCG twitch channel is Kind of crazy especially when an independent watch party channel can do the job better than the actual organisers
1:55:45 raz wolpe didnt play fezandipiti ex in his top 4 worlds list 🤷♂
I’m guessing they don’t make statements about specific people / situations to avoid legal risk.
Pretty much.
Azul teaching everyone a web development 101 course.
Okay (I say this jokingly) Kentucky is the South, you were just robbed of good tea. Louisville is also very far North in the state, across the river is Jeffersonville, Indiana. Btw loved the mimikyu suit Chip
Wait what Toronto is live today?
i hit 6 bolt in louisville
Kentucky is where the south officially starts. It’s just a very unique state, the blend of the mid west and south. Also who the hell served you sweet tea here? That’s an abomination of god to us.
Gearhart quitting Pokemon TCG is proof the game has never been better.
What does “local time” mean for this though… is that local for Toronto? Or some other time zone…
All the times are local to that tournament, so yeah it would be Toronto time in this case
EST is Toronto time
Do you ever plan to have guests, e.g., Jake gearhart
instead of top 8 just make it cut to top 32. Yugioh made this change years ago when they had SJC tournaments that were top 8. Now its top 32-64 depending on attendance.
His typing up of stuff is NOT optimal
Thank you for not putting so as the first word in the title
🎉🎉🎉
Not pokemon, but I play Digimon and last regional my buddy hit the same deck 7 out of 9 rounds. Imperialdramon was attached at the hip to that man all day.
I signed the “bank Dusknoir” sign while I had Dusknoir on my bench.
Azul is cringe af.
Bro I'm just gonna say this, azul is a top tier pokemon tcg player there's no denying that so why are you crying and whining about the new way they're doing tournament structures? You ever play another tcg? Homie get over it. Azul been cringe since he complained about the way people shuffle. Man needs to go play ygo or one piece and get slapped on before he complains about pokemon
Seems like considering he knows more about the game than most and has played longer than most, he would have the most knowledge of good versus bad structure. I haven't been playing nearly as long as him but agree that the new structure is fundamentally flawed.
"other games are worse" is not the point you want to make bud
Coming from other games, I can say that the amount of variance, times and amount of ties you get in pkmn in comparison to other games is the biggest factor to this structure being flawed specifically for pokemom. You'll almost never draw a tie as often for a series in any other card game than you do in pokemon. Because of that X-2 here is treated more like X-1 which gives no wiggle room for variance, which card games have.
@@amerillo1588 Very good point. Adapting a swiss system that doesn't account for ties doesn't work well in a game with a high tie rate
Instead of wanting better for the community, I should go play something worse to see how bad they have it and this will make me content with having something that could be better?
