Update: Personally, the RESY credit has been triggering on non-RESY restaurant purchases It's quite possibly a glitch and AMEX may fix it in the future. However until then, it makes it a lot easier to trigger that RESY credit to help justify the annual fee.
The problem with the Dunkin credit is that it is a discount on an outrageous price. I can get the same cup of black coffee for 40-50 cents at home, why wait in line for it and pretend it is $3.50 of value?
I keep wanting to like AMEX but they just don’t offer a card that appeals to me. I don’t eat at restaurants, rarely use Uber, never use Resy, never go to Dunkin. We don’t even have a 5 Guys. The platinum likewise doesn’t fit my lifestyle. The credits just aren’t helpful to me.
oh gosh. ya getting gold card sounds like it would be worse than getting a card from Credit One for your situation. Amex just sucks with its high annual fee and credits strategy
Thanks for the video. I was happy with the Amex Gold card until the recent change. The Dunkin Dounts and Resy credits do not benefit me and I was unable to receive any retention offer so I cancelled the card. I still have the Amex Platinum but contemplating cancelling that card as well.
Last month, Amex offered me 100K pts to swap the Gold for the Platinum, so I have been to 6 lame Centurion buffets in the last 4 weeks. I used some of the MR pt bonus book the Hilton Waikoloa Village, my wife's favorite Hilton resort in the Islands.
I have the $250 AF until mid next year I will reevaluate then but 4x groceries and 4x restaurants with the increased caps is solid if you utilize those spend categories!
Should have made the base 1.5x at least, otherwise it's too much of a pain to use, too high annual fee for what it is and I get better multipliers elsewhere. it's gone next renewal for me.
Where else do you get better than 4X at groceries and dining? Because seriously I’d be curious. I come out a bit ahead because using the credits is super easy for me and they do provide value, but I know that isn’t true for everyone… but if another card has better multipliers I’d look at it.
This has got to be the most polarizing credit card in the game, 2nd only to the amx platinum 😆 -I personally like it! We spend a ton on groceries, eating out & ordering in. - i like dunkins coffee & food. - My wife’s favorite restaurant is a resy restaurant. - i really like 5 guys. I prefer shake shack but 5 guys is more convenient for me. - my AF hit in july so im still at $250 till next year!! 😁
The Amex Gold and Amex Platinum are solid cards folks just need to utilize the spend categories they excel in not complain because the card was never built for their intended spend!
This card is even better for me now. Although I dont go to Dunkin like that, the Resy credit still makes it work out great for me. Would have been a little annoyed if I was somewhere that didnt have Resy or DD though. As long as the earnings didnt get worse im cool, cuz its a nice earner for me. Nice review!
If you were on the fence about cancelling before, I don’t think the update should be the reason to cancel. The update is actually positive for the Resy credit alone. Fee went up $75 but you’re going to get $100 back easily over the course of a year. $25 in your pocket while naturally doing what the card is supposed to do (pay at restaurants). That said if the card wasn’t the right fit for you before, this also certainly didn’t change anything. Personally that business gold is actually looking mighty tasty - 4x restaurants and gas with higher cap and very ez credit to liquidate and bring annual fee down to 135 a year. If you’re a big spender on restaurants and gas, this is the way IMO.
I’m downgrading to the green card. After the whole rebrand + expensive annual fee….yeah no. I’m still happy to keep that relationship with AMEX going as in the future…I might look into the platinum + business plus as I focus on my career more.
Totally agree with asking for a retention offer especially this year. I'm (hoping) that they are a bit more lenient with these this year since you can make the argument for not loving the changes. Overall though, I'll still be holding the Amex Gold Card long-term and I'm pretty easily able to maximize the new Resy Credit. Great video Chase!
Resy $50 every 6 months is a lot better than $10 per month. Be nice if they did that with Uber. Then I would just ride to the airport and save the 3 weeks parking fee.
It is just stupid to have these monthly incentives. Do you like Dunkin' Donuts? No, not really. Were you planning to go to Dunkin' at least once every month? No. Great!!! We are going to give you $7 to spend at Dunkin each month. We will raise the annual fee on this card for that convenience. How often do you use RESY? Never. Great!!! We are going to.... Do you like Five Guys? No. This is so awesome, you can go out and buy things you never wanted to make it feel like you are getting your moneys worth on the annual fee. This card is so great, it makes me buy and pay for things that I never wanted. If I don't, I feel like I am throwing free money in the garbage.
This is 10000% true. I wish more people thought like this so they don't pay for a credit card that doesn't suit them. It's important to think like this when considering a new card or whenever card updates happen like this 👍🏽
Chase, I think it’s time for you be honest with yourself and just cancel the card. There’s literally no reason for you to have it other than to say you have it 😂
If you don't have kids like me who we take to dunkin once a month for a donut then I'm not sure if you ever use the dunkin credit. For me, I love it but your mileage will definitely vary.
I disagree with everyone who does not like the update. This update finally made me WANT this card. 100,000 bonus point offer, $99 positive value each year and I will use all these credits gladly.
Update: Personally, the RESY credit has been triggering on non-RESY restaurant purchases
It's quite possibly a glitch and AMEX may fix it in the future. However until then, it makes it a lot easier to trigger that RESY credit to help justify the annual fee.
There are some mixed datapoints that restaurants using Toast (but not Rest-listed) might trigger the Rest credit. Ymmv of course.
@@shadowblade232 ahhh thanks for the insight

hahah ya i dont drink coffee at all, but I definitely would be the type to make it at home if I did 😅
I liked the upgrades in credits so much, I got a second gold card.

Good call! 👍🏽
Yes, where I live is just way too small to take advantage of any of these credits, so there is no way for me to justify the annual fee
yup. definitely not meant for every city

I mean 100k is a solid bonus 👏🏽 And the Waikoloa properties are niceeeeee 🫶🏽
You can load DD and maybe buy a gift card later in year for others. And I personally don’t have any SS near me but have several FGs.
true. I can pass out free coffee and donuts to my friends / family. hopefully you can now use that dining credit at FGs now!
I have the $250 AF until mid next year I will reevaluate then but 4x groceries and 4x restaurants with the increased caps is solid if you utilize those spend categories!
yuppppz! those multipliers are nice to have if your spend justifies it
The credits just didn’t make sense for me anymore. Sadly I just cancelled my card. Great vid my guy 👍🏼
Amex just lost a great customer 😢

the high annual fee definitely can cause issues. especially when the credits don't exactly provide someone with value

well said Darius 🤙🏽 The Resy credits are the saving grace for the annual fee spike. But Amex seriously needs to chill on raising the annual fees 😳

that BBP and platinum are still great cards. especially if you can utilize the platinum's credits. That green card is also underrated
I can’t use my credit for food anymore because the card is attached to uber account than I no longer have access too
are you able to create another uber account by any chance?
@@ChaseYokoyama you can but once you link you Amex uber credits to an account it is permanently stuck to that account
Nice breakdown of the new changes 👍🏼
Thank you so much boss man Xavier 😤!
Imagine what you could do with four Gold Cards and a unique food business,...
I'd have too many MR points to know what to do with myself.
Great review!

im with you 100% monthly is annoying and playing with the card holder I view it at least.
my sentiments exactly
They should have kept it as it was before it was a perfect Amex getting greedy
