Who is Chadwin Smith? I am an aspiring cinematographer. I love creating videos and showing others how to light and shoot better videos! I also review tech and gear. Based in Arizona, USA - Фільми й анімація
It definitely looks much more professional. And you are right. UA-cam is hiding your videos. Let me hit that like button and see if that can help. Keep up the good work.
Yeah, it's a much better looking handle with a smaller footprint. Thanks for hitting the like button! Gotta do something to get that algorithm moving...haha
Great video man! Such a good little handle. I saw this too on their website and then found your video. Looking nice for suit my SmallRig cage and eos R. New subscriber from Sydney Australia! Cheers 🍻
Never knew I needed a top handle until i saw this video haha Literally transforms your regular DSLR into a full fledged production cam
Creative 7 Inc heck yeah!! Top handles are definitely a great addition to any DSLR, highly recommend it.
3:54 "Look at that, WHEEEEEW!!😫"
The hype is REAL, lol. I ordered this because of you.
Lord McLoudmouth 😂😂 yeah sorry, sometimes I get really hyped about camera gear lol! You won’t regret getting it
Legit just bought this from this video! Thank you! I hope it gets here in time for the documentary I'm filming!
Zack Scriven Media awesome!! Yeah, it makes for such a great and compact setup. Good luck on the doc!
@Billy Shakespeare what do you mean?
@Billy Shakespeare I filmed and posted the documentary over a year ago. Lol. That's why your comment is confusing to me. It was a 30-Day Road Trip that had a defined start day. We had accomodations and everything planned accordingly. So I was not delaying the start for some gear. Thanks 👍
We get excited for top handles haha. Especially small parts to finish the rig.
That fortnite sound effect lol good one
YES! I get so stoked when I find a new piece of gear that will work perfectly with my setup too. haha gotta love good 'ole Fortnite!
Sweet! I didn’t even know this was available
Marcos Rocha I didn’t either until last week when I saw it on their website. The moment I saw it, I knew it was what I needed for my rig! 😆
I love this, dang the only concern i have is that i use the camera for photography too, and sometimes want the flash trigger, or even a sony mic on the hot shoe/e shoe. Can the handle be mounted off set or does it have to be right in the middle over top of the main hotshoe? One or the other I guess?
I have that same setup on my canon m50 mark II. It looks like it's all one piece and it feels all connected together perfectly.
that's awesome! this setup would work great with the M50, keeping it nice and compact!
Need the same handle & cage for Sony A99.....!
Super video bro.
SRIKANTA ROUT thanks man!
U welcom sir
Do you have any sample videos with this setup?
How did you attach the monitor mount in your old top handle? You unscrew the 4 little screws in the front of the handle? Did you buy longer screws to do it? Thank you!
Marcelo Sato yeah. I had to jimmy rig my old top handle to mount the monitor. I took 2 longer m42 screws for another piece of gear and used them for the top 2 screws to tighten down the mount. I don’t recommend it. Just get a top handle with 1/4 20” threads.
yes thx you small rig, have searched for month a tiny top handle that not bring the monitor so hight from the camera, all other top handle are just ridiculously tall compared to the mirrorless itself
no problem! hope you found what you needed
my dream set up omg
yogi rediansyah heck yeah!! It’s such a simple setup but so great
True dat, just ordered these things after watching this haha
Chadwin, thanks for this post about the new style top handle, it's really nice from what I can see. What is the official name of the "new little monitor mount?" You forgot to list it here, instead you listed a different monitor mount. Great educational videos. BTW I want to use these items on the BMPCC 4K since I own a SmallRig full cage. Should I have any concerns?
Kamishimo Productions I’m not sure the exact name of the monitor mount. But I have linked to a few ones in the description. I also linked to a couple top handles, check them out-it should all be there! It will def work with the P4K, I’m using it with the 6k now.
@@chadwin , you're awesome Chadwin. I sure did play the video about 7 times to get how the new little monitor mount/SmallRig Monitor Mount with Arri Locating Pins looks like. Yes, you do have it listed in the description and I'm going to order both, the top handle and the SmallRig Monitor Mount with Arri Locating Pins. Thanks again for all the advice and tutorial about the P4K.
Kamishimo Productions no problem! Haha thanks for watching so much and being a part of the cam fam!! Good luck with your setup
Great video - I want a similar setup. Any particular reason why you chose the Smallrig 2174 monitor mount over the Smallrig BSE2348? The BSE2348 does swivel and tilt and even has a smaller footprint. Only thing I can think of is if the tilt/swivel tension is not high enough then the monitor may shift when you don't want it to. Maybe in that sense the 2174 has less things to worry about and it looks like you can adjust the tension with the allen wrench where I did not see how that could be done on the BSE2348.
In short, I NEVER use monitor mounts with a swivel when possible because they always end up turning and moving when I don't want them to. I prefer tilt only, but that's just my preference.
@@chadwin Thanks Chad - I think you're right. Unless the swivel is built in, the cables usually get in the way anyhow. If I need to film myself, I can always loosen the screw, rotate an re-tighten on my own terms
Nice! Where do you put your mic?
Irene Young I don’t typically use one on cam, but you could easily put a cold shoe mount anywhere on the cage and throw a shotgun mic on
good video
Thank you for making awesome products!! I keep buying 'em haha!
SmallRig China will you make a small side handle like this? i have the a6300, but will upgrade to the a6600 and i would like a side handle that doesn't stick out a lot , or weigh a lot. i hope it can be the same size of the rig (Vertically).
something that looks like this in the videoua-cam.com/video/51zFQnTFMxA/v-deo.html
The link to buy the top handle is broken, and I can't find it for sale.
gotcha, here's an updated link to the top handle on Amazon! geni.us/MD2393
and if you're looking for one with NATO mount, here's another great option geni.us/NATOtop
Just a question with the bolt on monitor mount how did you attach it to the Handle? I have the same Handle and monitor mount and the screws just can’t reach :(
Daniel Keane yeah, go watch my latest video. It breaks down top handles in detail. ua-cam.com/video/jmh_y0VfiDY/v-deo.html
You can only put a monitor on that handle if you have extra long M5 screws like I had laying around. Don’t recommend it tho
Chadwin Smith thank you for the reply really appreciate it :) I’ll have to give the larger screws ago as Iv only the one type of handle :( but seriously thank you :)
Chadwin Smith Also can I ask why you don’t recommend it? :)
Cannot find anywhere the mini top handle shaped to fit fingers...
They finally added it on Amazon amzn.to/3kiX9SO
Im having a real issue attaching the small rig mount to the handle like you have at the start of this video! Please could you fill me in how you attached that
Flushy101 you have to use the SmallRig monitor mount that only has one center screw, it’s the Arri pin version. Anything else won’t mount to the front of the handle.
@@chadwin Ahhh i see, your handle variation must also have that one pin system, the one i have doesnt! oh well, thanks for your help
LFG! Top handles are the move for run and gun filmmaking and this one is SO much smaller.
Robbie Hou yeah, it’s definitely smaller than your average top handle. But, having had both now, this is still large enough and I have big fat hands. Lol! Can run and gun still!
Does this come with nato clamps instead?
not yet! But SmallRig is working on a new version with a NATO mount, very excited for that!
If they made a nato rail version of it I'm sold.
chumleyok I know that’d be so nice.
why are you giving advice about the red top handle when that isn't the one you even used in this video? You provide two links, say you used the red top handle, but you actually used the other one (SmallRig Mini Top Handle for Cinematic Cameras MD2393) ... I ordered the red top handle and apparently it's not compatible with a half cage system. Thanks!
Hello Friend. What lens is this? Thank you!
Fabio Melo Luiz hey! That’s my Rokinon Cine DS 50mm lens. Fully manual, I love it!
@@chadwin Tks. Congratulations on the videos!
I can’t tilt the screen that easy because I tighten it. Does that mean I don’t have to tighten it???
CelosTelevision yeah, I wouldn’t tighten it so much to wear you can’t tilt it. I’ve found a sweet spot where it’s rigid, but can still move when I want it to.
does it mach with fx3?
As long as you put a cage on the FX3, you should be able to screw it on top yes. However, I found that I'm liking a few NATO mount top handles not with the FX3 because the smallrig cage comes with NATO rail across the top.
@@chadwin I realized from SmallRig that it was impossible to connect the Top handle to the smallrig hlaf cage NATO rail, can you to approve?
And of course thanks for the reply!
@@Iggy-REC let me test out mounting this small top handle on the FX3 half cage and I'll let you know. it does have 1/4 20" threads on top of the nato rail, but i'm not sure if they're the right spacing yet
What lens is that in your camera ?
that's the Rokinon Cine DS 50mm. But I use all of the Cine DS prime lenses, so many focal lengths.
Thank you
I like the big rubber one have more grip
philipp J. Yeah, the rubber ones are definitely much more grippy! There’s a top handle right for each person I think.
@@chadwin on the metal one i start to sweat a lot after more than 1h handheld shooting
@@philippj.9214 Yeah, I've definitely experienced that working with all kinds of gear. Especially in Arizona where it's 110 degrees most of the time.
@@chadwin Germany sounds cold but every year its getting hotter my hottest shoot was 40° but most arround 25- 30° in summer in spring i was shooting in the desert of dubai with all the heat and the smal sand it wasnt that nice but still a incredebil expereans
philipp J. Hahaha! Yeah, you always hear Germany is freezing cold, but I imagine the summers do get warm. Now Dubai, that’s a true dessert! Must’ve been Very hot. I’m jealous, always wanted to film there.
Nato rails have no issues with bending, buy better stuff and you don't gotta worry.... they are pretty damn awesome.
I am a bit wary if you need to look at viewfinder with this, I see forehead hitting it a lot, worst case would be eyes.
Yeah, 100% it difficult to look through the viewfinder with the top handle on. That's why I always use an external monitor. Can't remember the last time I even looked through a viewfinder...
we have the same feel about putting the monitor in front and make it the same as with red cameras, and I came across this video. ua-cam.com/video/6_pgMPITLsU/v-deo.html
I don't know if this might be helpful to you or not (because you're using a different type of cage) but try to look at how he mounted the monitor.
Show some footage!
I was surprised that you were speculating that a NATO is shaky when it sounds like you haven’t actually tried them yourself, and are relying on what someone else said. I have a much heavier rig than yours and the NATO rails are absolutely rocksolid. And much faster for changing cinfigs on set.
sidewinder3000 yeah. I had just heard that they can have some give or wiggle to them. But, now I actually have used a NATO rail top handle from SmallRig and it’s pretty solid! 🤦🏼♂️ you live and you learn right. Glad yours is working well!!
Chadwin Smith Rock on! Dig your reviews and appreciate your response.
Hello, friend!! May I contact you via Facebook? I have some business enquiry for you~~
Lol this is not a 12lb rig
