If you ordered one and were sent a 500, I would return it and give a negative review to dealer for false advertisement. As of 06-18-24 they still say they are selling 450's. Don't get scammed.

My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We saw over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

For our particular situation, this type of head is a disaster. We weed whack about six acres of dry weeks in the spring and early summer for wildfire mitigation. We have some rocks that are not visible below the 3ft tall weeds. When this type of head hits a rock and breaks off the lines, you have to disassemble the head to rewind the line. When putting things back together if you don't get it snapped together completely right it may come apart and you risked losing some of the metal parts where the line comes out. We used these heads for one day before that happened. Also the heads are not that easy to open and snap shut, especially for my wife that does 60% of our weed whacking. Now we stick with the old fashioned heads where you wind it the old fashioned way and never have had a problem.

I purchased the SpeedFeed 500 about a year and half ago when my supplier told me that the 450 had been replaced by the 500. initially it worked fine with the supplied line but once I ran outta line and replaced it with my Echo .130 line I soon noticed that the line was breaking from one hole as I used it leaving me with a single trimmer line. When I investigated the inner spool, I noticed that the line was melted in place. At that time, I contacted Echo and they told me that they had no history of complaints on this issue. Initially I thought that the issue was due to me using such large line but when I went back to .095 line I still had the issue. The way I have been dealing with the issue is by installing only about five feet of line on the spool at a time and that way the line runs okay, but I do run outta line quickly. Thank you for bringing this issue out in the open and look forward to finding a resolution to the issue.

Great job Bre, well done! We, the end users, need the stronger voice that you provide.
Sometimes, companies are unaware that there is a problem until someone like you shouts about it loud enough forit to go up the 'food chain' to take action. Lower down the chain staff don't always bother to escalate these issues, so they fall on deaf ears.
I'm an industrial maintenance engineer over here in the UK, we often get asked 'why didn't you fix it earlier?' 'well', I say, 'I'm not clairvoyant!', 'If no one tells me about it, and it does not show up during routine checks and maintenance, I won't know to fix it!'
After all, the end user, especially the commercial users, know the equipment better than most of the techs and engineers, as they use it day in day out.

I drill a hole for each blade in cover of the line cords and fasten the plastic blade loosely with a bolt and lock nut. There are UA-cam videos on how to do this.

I love that you do this!! I did this in a different industry for something super geeky and was the only one in the world who spotted it, rang a guy in my country who had to ring the manufacturer in Canada and the next day and email came out with a hold on the product. My national manager came up to me and asked what I did and I'm like oh crap I'm in trouble but she was excited as it was a 700 page manual and the defect was in coding around page 450 something (funny you say 450 in this video too as I was typing this).
Anyhoo, I still talk to the commercial guys like this in trade stuff, but we don't get heard from here to big companies.
And yeah, heaps of trimmers, especially electric, do this now. The bearings don't seat properly and the electric motors melt the plastics.

We just had to do our annual weed trimming of our 6 acre property in Northern California (no mowers because of fire danger and rocks). It's a big undertaking so we were hoping the 500's on our two Stihl FS 131 (handlebar version) wouldn't have this problem. My partner had it jam twice on the first load of string. I had it start jamming on my second load. I went back to the trimmer heads that came with the Stihl. They may be a pain to load, but at least I didn't have to keep taking them apart to unjam. I just ordered a couple of 400s for next year. For anyone that cares, I had also purchased the Stihl 26-2 heads which are supposed to be speed feed-like. Those are even worse. We couldn't load them because of the dirt that they let get inside. They wouldn't spin freely to load the line. I was having to take them apart each time to clean them out. How is it so hard to make a decent trimmer head?!

I needed a new cover on the job and I have bought the head for the old Stihl trimmer. I thought both were the same but the lids wouldn't fit. One must be a 450 and the other a 500. The line that was melting was the one that came on the SRM 3020

    Nice job Bree!
I don't cut lawns for a living. I got tired of buying cheapo trimmers and so bought an Echo trimmer. Every time I used it, the line would get tangled up and had to remove the cap. Also, it was a pain to get it started. I am disappointed in the brand.

I have used Echo power equipment for over 20 years, & the main reason was that it was always easy to start. Take your trimmer back to the dealer & let them take a look at it.

I had this happen to my 3020 just two weeks ago. I replaced the head with another 500. Yes, it was in the 90's when I was running it. I had no idea this was a common issue! I hope they get a better design out soon! Thanks so much Chickanic!

I am having the same issue with my battery Milwaukee M18 combo string trimmer. It has a tendency to melt the line inside the head just like you showed. I have no idea who makes the head for Milwaukee, but every now and then I have to take it apart and rewind it because it is stuck. Anyway, awesome job on getting the company to address the problem.

This comment is about the 400. I agree that it's a great trimmer head, with one exception. The grommets get a groove in them that snags the line, keeping it from advancing, rendering the head body useless. Can they be replaced? I end up buying a whole new assembly every year or two.

Hello Bre. I was impressed that Echo immediately confirmed from the beginning of your phone conversation that other customers were having issues with the trimmer heads. Im always amazed that companies quit manufacturing their products that are proven over time in favor of pure junk - Why do they do this???

Thank you for making the video about the melting head. I recently purchased a 3020 and experienced the same thing within the first hour of using it with the line that was included with the trimmer. I would not have figured out what was happening if it weren't for your video. It melted on me when I was using it in 70 degree weather! I tried different line and got the same result. Since they aren't making the 450, I purchased a knock off 450 head.

I have a new echo srm 2620 that has the speed feed head, and although i do like the speed feed head, i find if the string melts together, you have to take it apart and when the plastic wears out you have to replace the whole head. I have an older grey head 260 echo, and i think i prefer that head with the insert. It's not easier to load string, but you have less issues with it.

Thanks for the info on echo. I haven't been up to date on the new stuff, but I never have understood why companies discontinue a line of product when they're good just to keep the aftermarket in the dark. If a customer can't afford the price of new corporate parts what recourse do they have, and yes I am aware most of the guys buying these are commercial, but I for one , after I was no longer in the business end of things still liked using quality commercial tools

  • @tomjones4318

When I got mine four years ago on a Stihl I chose the small one so I guess the 400. The line friction welded together once. I changed it out and went on. Saying the heads are melting may be an over statement. Haven't seen any damage to the head itself but I'll check now after hearing this. Yes it's good to demand products that work. But there's a far more fundamental problem with all string trimmers sold today in the US. 80% of Americans pay for it every time they use them and ignore the problem. Had a Toro 40 years ago that was designed correctly *for an American!* I tried telling shops in my area and they couldn't get their brains turned on. So there's a hint, you figure it out.

My dad bought tons of junk weedeaters at box stores over the years. If he got 3 years out of them, he was jumping up and down with delight. I told him to stop buying junk ones and get a good one, like an Echo. He dropped 2 and a half bills on a weedeater for the first time in his life, one of the Echo weedeaters from a dealer, about 6 years ago. He is still using that weedeater to this day with ZERO problems whatsoever.

I was tried of the crappy head on my old Toro and looked into replacement heads for it and found your video on the 400 and picked on up. Unfortunately there was no way to lock the head like every other trimmer that I've seen so I gave it to my brother (it still worked fine) and bought myself a new DeWalt. First thing I did was spin the stock head off and put the 400 on and have been super happy with it so far. Also bought the endoscope you recommended as well. Didn't work as well as I'd hoped for what I bought it for but it's been quite useful for other things which still makes it a win.

that figures with all of the engineers they have working on it they decide to take a great product off the line that works great and put a defective product out for the customer or the commercial lawn care worker for them to have major frustration or they are going to take the speed feed 450 design and work it into the 500 and then call it the 500 improved head we will have to keep an eye on it thanks for the videos Bre love them and watch all of them have a great day and stay hydrated with the summer heat take care Chris

I had a line melting on the head issue with a consumer-grade electric Weedeater. I spent more time with the head off pulling out stuck melted line than using the unit. Only corrected once I bought a 3rd-party replacement head. Left it with the house when I sold the house.
