- [ Update Oct. 30, 2020]: 1990, Aug. 9, NYC, Woody's. Re-upload of a recording I've previously upped to yt. We now know its correct, full title is "Candle Song." Another 1990 set list used on stage by the band turned up. It shows full titles of all songs, and "Candle Song" is on the song list. The list is from a show at Columbia, S.C., at Greenstreet's venue. A 1990 set list that turned up earlier had abbreviated titles of some songs, as it turned out. It listed "Candle," but now we know it's correct title is "Candle Song."

-Am I right in guessing this song tells a similar tale as the early '60s top 40 hit single "Last Kiss" (later covered by Pearl Jam & others), about a couple's fatal car crash? Just one survives to tell (sing) of surviving the crash intact. The survivor, post-crash, unhappily discovers their beloved isn't so lucky, & sings the sad tale!
Such a beautiful heart wrenching song! I wish they'd have performed this more often...This seems to be the only live performance for this song.
There is another 1990 recording (Aug. 25), from Club Lingerie, L.A. (not upped to yt) with this song as well as the unreleased "Walk in Dark". This version from Woody's is by far the best though as the vocals are pretty clear here but are not clear in the other one. Luckily we have this recording of it!
As far as know the band didn't perform those two songs after 1990.
Oh cool. Interesting. I wonder why they never recorded it, its magic... Hope had super charged vocals during this show it seems. This song feels really emotionally charged.. I dunno if I am projecting my own current state of angst, one of many things this band makes better. Gosh her delivery is perfect imo
edit - "recorded" it in some studio fashion. I like the gain and the sound boarding /mix of this is decent for 1990, but "its a shame" they didnt play it more! (punny) or play around with it in the studio..
I'm sure there were factors beyond my understanding, but yeah this song would fit into any of their M.S. albums.

The raw emotion in the recording is un-tamble :) Nah I thought the same, its a chill psychedelic ride instrumentally - then hope is absolutely incredible on the vocals; as per norm, but yeah... I just had a bad heavy disconnect with my partner recently and this song has been making me peak super hard. While about a car crash, the lyrics apply to me and my dumb ass habits driving the relationship into terriotry she didnt understand - me wanting it to work, missing her for a month, but had to say goodbye today and its a shame.

This is a re-upload of a recording previously findable on my yt Channel. This new upload includes new info, including the song's correct title, recently discovered. Plus I've added 4 photos we now know were taken at this Aug. 9, 1990 Woody's, NYC show: the 4 of Hope in a long, dark, robe-like dress (photos by Ebet Roberts).
I found this digging around in your live set compilation and freggin love this song! Hope has a real fierce tone, and her and david seem synced up. So. many. gooosebumps. Thanks Hermie your my fav mazzy star/opal/hope currator and I tots appreciate ya. Im 32 and wasnt able to experience this scene. David is my biggest inspiration as a homebrew musician / shoegaze fan :)

What do you mean by "original"? It's a song they only played live, and only on their 1990 tour. This is the best quality live version of it I know of.
I meant the recorded version. But I didn’t know it was only played live. Thank you for posting this as I never would have heard it otherwise
