In most part of India, these days '3G Cutting' or Third Generation Cutting is gaining popularity among progressive farmers. We do this on gourds, cucumber and quite a few other plants. Works wonders! Can't wait for the update on passion fruit! 😍

are you saying that this method can be applied to gourds and cucumbers? also, can someone confirm, this method looks very similar to the way a grape vine is pruned, am i right?

I just let the vines run high up into pine trees where they grew very well. the vine base is nearly 50 mm diameter. Once ripe they fell down onto nice clear ground under the trees. All passionfruit are different but in general they tend to be self-sterile, not polliating themselves very well. So, grow several seedlings together to get enough genetic variation for cross pollination.
best natural pollinators are the carpenter/bumble bees they are larger than honeybees and will brush male/female parts. Keep plenty of wood around for those bees to live in and plant whichever plants are known to attract those bees in your area.

Thanks a lot, I needed this video! I'm going to plant a Passiflora incarnata (for the flowers and the fruits) and I know it is a too vigorous vine. I'll take care of surrounding the root with some barrier (it can send shoots even under buildings!) and also will apply your method of pruning. 😇

Thanks for the video! I live in Nicaragua and passionfruit is called calala here. It is a super fun plant to grow because it grows well in the beginning in almost anything. After the first growth season (maybe 6-10 months of growing) then the plants go dormant for a bit and then they start growing again. Calala seems to have a seasonal growth cycle here as far as I can tell, it gets really big then drops lots of leaves no matter where I've seen them grow! Its easy to think they are dying when they drop their leaves but I think its just the beginning of their dormant period, and as far as I know the dormant period is unavoidable and might even be necessary?

Here in the Tsitsikamma forests of the Cape of South Africa, there is an ant pollination occurring too, but as has been said we are planting cyclopia internata to attract the carpenter bees to pollinate the larger flowering passiflora types which we cultivate around our house and treehouse. Our young boy and his friends guide them throughout the superstructure of the treehouse and prune and drop to the numerous vine roots below. They are also nesting habitat for our little white eye birds who are natural pest predators for the passiflora. The continued presence of the kids about the vines keep the larger predatory Burchell's coucal away, and see allow for healthy breeding population of Knysna dwarf chameleons. Thanks. Mine has already gone nuts and has lots of dead leaves. So now I am going to attack and try to produce the order you talk about. Plus now with mess it seems the annual gulf frutillary butterflies are avoiding it. Wish me luck.

Hi there, thanks for this video. My passionfruit vine has done very well and is about 3 years old. It has climbed up my deck and basically all over the deck railing and lattice. I am almost done with harvesting all its fruits and can see that it has put on new growth, new shoots growing. May I know if autumn (where I am) is a good time to prune it? I love my passionfruit vine so much and hope I wont accidentally kill it. Mine is a Red Panama. Thank you.
Qik query -My passion flower produces lots of flower but the fruit ball is empty no fruit is inside .....why is that?

Will soon post update. Unfortunately I lost the first flowers due to lack of pollination, but am working on manually pollinating them myself now. Make sure you check out the pollination video!
How to make 2nd and 3rd branches.
They are actually called lateral vines. From the original vine, you let it grow to your desired height, then you cut off the very end, which is called the terminal bud. This will tell the plant to begin growing lateral vines below the spot where you cut off the terminal end. Pick the number of laterals you want to keep to grow to the left and right side. At some point, you will want to cut off the terminal buds of these as well, once they reach your desired length. During this process, you will see additional laterals growing from these, which will be the ones to produce fruit.
