Double Harmonic Scale (aka Bhairav Raga, Gypsy Major, Byzantine, Arabic Scale) Harmonica Lesson

- The double harmonic major scale (also known as Gypsy Major, Arabic, Byzantine or Bhairav Raga in Indian music) has a very dark, evocative sound. You can think of it as a major scale with the 2nd and 6th degrees flattened. In this video I'm playing a regular C harp (Seydel 1847) in Richter tuning.

I'm in Northern India 🇮🇳 this week in the Himalayan mountains, so I thought I'd do something a bit different. This is a lesson on the Double Harmonic Major scale, known as the Bhairav Raga in traditional Indian music.
Yooo damnnm, welcome to India friend. I'm from the north as well
@eleven937 thank you! I'm in Rishikesh. First time in India for me, I love it here. Namaste 🙏
Are you Gonna Pass by Delhi? Till when are you in India?
My friend you are NOT IN HIMALAYAS YET. They begin from Berinag. Anyways you are still in plains of Gharwal.
You need to be at LOHA GHAT TO MEET THE TIGER. ❤ Here you will find the monkeys well. Great to see you in India
Insane. The versatility of the instrument and the abundance and variety of key combinations in the world of sound makes me feel blessed
Thanks a lot. I've been playing with this scale for some time, and I had trouble adding the pitch fluctuation that are so important in many Middle Eastern sonorities. Actually, I've seen this scale being analyzed by an Indian neuroscientist. He was studying "pitch expectation", and why certain segments sound "natural" to us. These sound very natural to me. Where I grew up (Sao Paulo), there were whole neighborhoods with this sound kind of ubiquitous. Well, thanks again, have a great vacation, cool snake ring!
thanks for offering the lesson via coast of maine
Thanks for taking time out on your vacation to share a cool scale.
No problem, thanks for watching!
Lovely scale. I've been practicing using a similar Middle Eastern, Gypsy, Indian scale called the Harmonic Minor. Going to try this one you just gave us right now! Stay in India as long as you can and soak in all the colours every scent and listen to as many styles of Indian Music as you can. Always wanted to go there. Enjoy it well ~🕯💥🎶🤙🏽👁🌱♥️🌛❗️
Preenosi dobru energiju sirom svijeta 😊
Thanks for posting. Enjoy your holyday ! Greetings from morocco !
That flatted second is really where the flavor is. Tried doing that scale in G and it was really tough getting the bend.
You never cease to amase me will ! I'd of never thought of something like that, i guess that's what separates the gurus from the rest of us.
Cool scale👍
Awesome tutorial, would be cool to hear a video of you shredding this scale at some point.
That’s awesome! Thank you for sharing you knowledge!
My pleasure!
Cool stuff, Will, thanks for sharing!
Enjoy your holiday, and keep an eye on those monkeys! 😉

Very good.😎🤙🤙😍❤😍
Welcome to Uttrakhand Son 🖐️ 🇮🇳. This is plains, you need to be at Berinag. The Mountains.
The King lives there, I hope he is not challenging the King. May God save him then
Really informative lesson Will. Thanks for laying it out on your holiday-sounds like a great one. What an epic background to this video, and with the 🐒 monkeys audience. Best of travels Will.😊.
I hope you visit the Beatles shrine in Rishikesh 😊
I did!

I think of this scale as harmonic minor starting on the fifth degree, or the fifth mode of harmonic minor.
The fifth mode of Harmonic Minor is Phrygian Dominant ( 1,b2,3,4,5,b6,b7) It's almost the same but the 7th is flattened in phrygian dominant whereas this scale has a major 7th.
Cool 'ad-lib' lesson! I will definitely give it a try. Thanks for the monkey shots. Just a 'heads up' - be careful of your personal items that are shiny (like harmonicas) - sometimes the monkeys grab them. In some places the monkeys have learned to not give the object back until you 'trade it out' for some fruit. Glad your taking time off.
Cheers Steve!
Namaste
That was really cool and interesting Will! You look so different not in black. 😝 Glad your enjoying your holidays. Have you played for any people there just for fun?
Lol, I bought a whole new outfit when I got here, all my clothes are black, it didn't feel right in India 😁
Lol that's funny actually. You look good in yellow 👍
Are you in Rishikesh? Any plans to come to Delhi? Can we catch up if possible? I am raised around Rishikesh. Beautiful place ❤️ The Beatles came there too
9od?! Ouch. Lol
First I need to stop looking for monkeys so I can play with that scale. This is cool like being in school and having to do homework,(like I really did homework in school. I making up for it now. I finally know what doing homework feels like.thanks.🎶
Safe travels, Will! That air looks either fog-filled or polluted. Either way, it must be awfully thin up there for playing much on that harmonica! Could you feel the difference?
I think it's just cloud. The smog in Delhi was terrible though
@@willharmonicawilde Living on top of a WV mountain, I know what it's like to be up there "in the clouds". Seems odd to think about SMOG & @ the same time, cows freely wandering the streets. Must be quite the culture shock. Was your music well-received, or is your video the only time you've played anything in public there? Sounded great! Would be a very unique flavor woven into some Bad Luck Friday music! Sounds like it belongs w/some sitar. Have you ever attempted a "sitarish" sound with your harmonica? 🥂
Beware of the Monkeys in Gharwal.. They will Snatch the Harmonica from your hand and run away ... 👍🏻🐯. You are the entry of UK(UTTRAKHAND). THE RAAGA BHAIRAV MEANS LORD SHIV. God bless you be saved from the Tiger in Kumaon..❤ ... In LOHA GHAAT.. Vists Patal Bhuvneshwar and Kumaon Rifels Temple there you will know.. The Gods have called you 👍🏻🌹
Welcome to India, Will! Would you be performing in Mumbai by any chance?
Thank you! I'm not going to Mumbai this time unfortunately.
@@willharmonicawilde That's alright, Will. Peace out in rishikesh and wherever else in the Himalayas you might be visiting.
i use harmonic minor tuning as well, what is the relation between both scales , means, in whitch context should i use which?
Harmonic Minor scale formula is 1,2 b3,4,5,b6,7. Double Harmonic Major scale formula is 1,b2,3,4,5,b6,7. So the second and third note are different. As for when to use each one I just go by ear.
Hi, cool. What key is the harp in relative to the guitar? Ie what key does the guitar play for the harp in C etc
Same key, it's first position so C harp for C song.
Just do whatever you want being in King's land don't dare to challenge him. He is the King. He won't be welcoming, violence is common trait where he lives. Be nice. Its berinag and temple of fire. The origin of many asian king forces is from the nearby land you are standing. Its always unsafe in no entry zone. But yeah he doesn't say you anything there might be a reason find it.
Why can't this harp play overdraw?
Should our harp adjust first, then easily to overdraw?
It's hit and miss with all out of the box harps as to how well they overdraw. I have other Seydel 1847's that overdraw OK (if a little squealy) out of the box. To get good, clear overdraws you need to set the harp up for them with gapping etc.
You need a Snake in a basket Mate 😂
Lol
