"Techno, it was about ripping apart beats, and letting the scars show." - Walt Paper. It was so surreal to be watching this interview, seeing you both, almost 30 years later. The last time I saw you James I was at your house on the west side, looking at your closet of clothes hanging from the ceiling, with some friends, not sure how I even ended up there. You were one of the most fun, joyful, welcoming, generous, and gracious people. Those times. going to a club, felt like you were going where you belonged, a place to find your people. It was the one time I felt like I could really express myself, and be accepted. It was an alternate reality that accepted your craziness, your psychological problems, everything.
It’s so fascinating to see these two people with such a shared history talking to each other and reminiscing about those days. It’s like they have a shared understanding for something that we don’t have- a portal that allowed them to being in another world, one that was loud, glamorous, outrageous and absolute insanity at its best.
I remember watching these Club Kids in 6th grade on Donhue, Jenny Jones, Sally Jessie Raphael Show and The Ricky Lake Show in the 90s. I am 33 years old now. Wow has time changed
I remember the chaos and hype at the time, it's so interesting to revisit that era with more historical and cultural context now that we're decades removed from it.
I have been listening to W.C. read every night from his book while self quarantined here in Honolulu. I used to live on the east coast after leaving S.F. in 89. I was friends with Paige, Joey, Kenni Mae ( Pyramid) and used to visit N.Y.C. which had been my stomping ground in high school. I loved the peacocking and the bold reaction to the deconstruction of the old guard. It really WAS a global village. Attending any ACT-UP demonstration in N.Y.C. had a perk. Going out and blowing off steam with my friend Michael Galvin who was a artist and photographed ACT-UP demos. The thing that I miss is the most is the sense of community and New Yorkers were the BEST. As Michael would say about New Yorkers on this circuit , " HI ! Where are you going? Where have you been? Where are you now?" It was true. They were a breath of fresh air in a difficult horrific time. Today is the aids epidemic on steroids. Listening has been a breath of fresh air for me. Today is day 19 for me. I started about 4 days before Trump uttered the fact that the shit hit the fan. A MONTH AGO ! Be careful kids and this isn't unprecedented. It happened to the gay community in the 80's. Even today nobody is saying AIDS. Like that shit never happened.
I get you.those times were absolutely without care for everyday life,,,,,,,,,,,creatures of the night ,,,forever,,,,,rip Michael and Angel and all the rest who fell,,, 🌬💨💨🤍🙏🏼🤍🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊
James should have his own show where he interviews Icons, Legends and the Up and Coming Children. He has always been ahead of the game. "Transformations" was one of a kind and now everyone is doing a version of it. He needs to have his own outlet where he can shine. Give that man a show, or at least a hand job and a glass of milk!!!
Excellent input perspective, from two of the people i admire the most from that circle (aside from the bona fide genius, Michael himself). Really puts things into context. Interesting fashion choice for James, looks like a post-new age scholar. Should have done the club-kid photo tag on your outfit, "punk rock" like Ghaddafi (remember that piece you wrote some years back?). Walt ripped and stealth, talking culture and politics and aesthetics, at his finest. Was this filmed on the PoD Hotel balcony on 42nd? Looks like it. You can almost sense the electric air of that unique city through the screen.
JSJ being interviewed by himself, about himself. And Michael. Oh & ketamine. “ ooh you wrote a book, I wrote a book, Yes, yes, anyway, did I tell you I did that 1st & Michael was a genius & then we started something else. And Michael was so clever. Then it all went oops & the trends were all ones I set. Oh heroin, how glamorous....”
To answer your question about where Walt shows up in Party Monster, it’s the part in the movie that the club kids are on the tv show being interviewed by John Stamos’ character. He’s sitting in the front row with blue spiky hair and a pink and red striped long sleeve shirt.
JSJ is one of those terrible interviewers that talks WAY too much and instead of just listening, he’s always waiting to talk. I wish he’d shut up, and just let Walt talk because he’s way more interesting.
can we start the hubs and get the seven cycles and i need it to be free and you need to hurry uo and get every one out of the americas to the south and to africa and to australia period have fun and cycle formations but i want to see it on the hub no gate keeping its not fair. 😊

JSJ has morphed into my great aunt Betsy
To come out of the club kid scene and not look like a grotesque parody is quite a nice surprise... (Walt).. lol
aaaaaaa I'm screaming
JSJ being interviewed by himself, about himself. And Michael. Oh & ketamine.

💕💕 Not only is James the original Club Kid --- He also invented fashion in general 💕👑👐
