- Update on my DCS Controls. Nothing was wrong with my Warthofg throttle I just wanted an F16 one. The Antenna elevation control is a big plus ergonomically.
Jeezus that's a lot of gear man! One day... One day baby.
Thanks and now a Winnwing F15EX Throttle on the way
@@dcsanoldfighterpilotspersp4833 VKB just released their STECS throttle incidentally. Reviews should be hitting the internet in about a week's time by my guess.
thank you so much !
I am an Old CivilianAerobatics Tailweel pilot
trying to learn DCS as my 1st sim. I enjoy every one of your videos. I also mount
my stuff on blocks of wood or whatever
I also only bind what I actually need to use.
Very cool. I also fly the same Virpil collective, the Viper base and grip! Love all of them. Awesome video!
Thanks your welcome
I originally ordered a Komodo some years ago. Paid my hard-earned dollary-doos, and then nothing. After approximately three months, I contacted the guy and he had a (genuinely) sad story about delays with Covid and such.
He didn't have my order ready to dispatch. So, I cancelled.
He said he'd get it ready for me and send it as I had already paid. I said, "Yeah.. nah". He seemed pretty angry that I was cancelling and in the end I had to bring the notion of escalating to Consumer Rights, at which time he backed down and issued a refund.
I then went on to purchase pretty much all of the Virpil gear to replace my Thrustmaster setup and I couldn't be happier.
I dodged a bullet there, I think. To be fair, good luck to the guy for giving it a red-hot go - but the track record on durability is poor, and I could probably have a go at 3D printing and bulding my own collective if I could just motivate myself.
7 years ago I was dying to have a Heli collective and the only one I'd found was OE-XAM; never purchased. I wound up making my own by attaching a tripod bar to a cheap throttle and it worked.
Glad I never threw much money at this initially because now, the options are so much better. I really like the hybrid ability to both have a throttle while having a grip similar to the apache. I'm also leaning towards Virpil for a cyclic. Hopefully, by the time I can make the purchases they're in stock. VKB is my choice for anti-torque, simple but realistic.
Then my mind has to fight the urge; $5000 for a Heli sim or 10 hours of flight time...
excellent video, many thanks again for sharing this!!!!
Nice overview!
What exactly is the problem/nuisance when using the F16 throttle's radar knobs for the FA18 ?
I wanna fly both planes and am currently eyeing the F16 kit (mostly because of the throttles ergonomics, which seem way better - as in smaller^^ - then the huge 18 throttle, which is quite a beast...)
5 months too late, but for anybody else......the F16 and the F18 radar elevation controls work differently IRL. The F16's is 'absolute', ie. the radar elevation will move to the position commanded by the rotary controller. So for example, at 20% of rotary controller travel, and the rader will scan around 20% above it's lower limit of travel, ie. like for like. The F18 however, works on 'rate of travel', eg. when the knob is centered, the radar scan elevation won't change - move the knob 50% 'up' from center, and the radar elevation will start to move upwards at 50% of maximum RATE of travel, and will keep going until it hits the stops.
tl:dr - the F16's is much, much nicer when using the rotary controller. The F18's would be ok with a rotary controller that is spring loaded to center (I've forgotten what the real jet uses). The workaround in the sim is to use buttons, or some other system for controlling the F18's scan elevation, and not a rotary controller axis.
@@Shrike200 Thanks a bunch! And not too late, 'cause I haven't gotten around to upgrading my Hotas yet^^ Where did all that time go...
@ytdlder Oh, and by chance I watched a video of the real F18s buttons - so yes, the real controller is spring loaded to center.
@@Shrike200 Then something like a 2-way-HAT (as on the Virpil Throttle) might be a better fit (for the 18 at least)
Holy gear overload
If you are interested in getting rid of that Komodo UH-1 collective I would be happy to take it off your hands.
Been wanting to upgrade my HOTAS from a Gladiator NXT and TWCS to either a Winwing F18 throttle and F16 stick or a VKB gunfighter pro and Virpil CM3 throttle, but would like to save money if possible. Thoughts?
So all those choices seem pretty good tbh. Not the answer you want, I have never used the cm3 but a buddy in the 16AGR loves it. I have an Orion F18 on order I use both VKB and Virpil. All have been good. If it was me I would tailor it to what you want to fly, I have friends who change stick for every plane. I fly planes by what I feel is best. Ah64 is VKB and Virpil collective etc. Also all those you mentioned are great so availability may be an overriding issue.
If you want to save money, you should go to Winwing of course, but I'm concerned about their policy. I mean, there is no RMA (but I'm not sure) and some guys in the internet complains some disconnections of the stick in game. In EU we can return the parcel in 14 days even regardless any flaws (You have the right to revoke this contract within fourteen days without giving reasons). So spending about 600 euros for WW hotas (which I like btw) with none of the previous customer rights, I don't know, it seems to me a bit risky.
Great Hardware 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
@DCS an Old Fighter Pilots perspective. How did you get the Man Rng knob to work in DCS?
Nice office... What plate did you use to hold the Gunfigther to deskmount Virpil?
It was the original virpil Warthog molded I afraid a bit of drilling was required
Hi, thanks for the video. I am thinking of buying the Winwing Orion base and F16 throttle handle. I have limited space in my setup to the left of the throttle base. At 2:39 can you tell me what is the horizontal distance between the left vertical edge of the Orion base and the left outer vertical edge of the black vertical support. I need that measurement to see if it will fit in my setup. Thanks
If you are not bolting it down to a plate ( which I did so the horizontal attachment runner sticks out to the left) then the left edge is only only one inch form the left side of the Orion base. So the total width would be the Oion base width plus one inch.
@@dcsanoldfighterpilotspersp4833 Excellent. Thanks for the information.
just woooww!!!!
you need some good cable management
yeah pls, setup is cool otherwise..
Did you have anything issues Bidding the ANT ELEV knob? DCS can't seem to recognize it. Any way thanks for the video.
No it worked fine but you need to make sure it is just an axis in the winnwing software else it also has a button output which causes trouble.
@@dcsanoldfighterpilotspersp4833 thanks a lot, I'll give it another shot today.
What was your trick to get the MAN RNG working good in DCS? I hate that the HMD knob messes with it as far as where the axis starts. It is annoying me.
Sorry I made it a button and increased the repeat rate till I got a suitable response.
Nice Nice Nice boy,
Hello, I saw that you have a green light that flashes continuously.
What is it for?
Thank you
Absolutely nothing I just didn't turn it off in the software.
Has the WinWing F-16 throttle/stick ever stopped working?
No still works fine
@@dcsanoldfighterpilotspersp4833 Thanks for the response! Really wish virpil comes out with something like winwing and their F-16. If virpil doesnt by the end of 2024 I'm probably just going to go with WinWing.
is the 16th Air Guards Regiment disbanded? I cannot find a working website. Or a Discord channel.
Yea Discord is the comms method

Now that you've had the virpil collective for a month, how is the friction holding up?
Hmm good so far
