Sturdy and FLAT CNC Table - RatRig KillerBee #1

  • To complement my big BF30 CNC I decided to build a RatRig KillerBee hobby CNC router. It'll be great for working on larger pieces and with smaller tools, thanks to its big working envelope and fast spindle. In this video, I show how I built a table that is flat with no twist in it to provide a good base. With these cheaper CNCs, having a flat surface is important, as the frame is not strong enough to stay flat on its own.

Great to see some more content on the Killerbee. Looking forward to seeing more!

I like that big red kill-switch on the wall in the background

Awesome! Looking at the Killerbee to and the tipps on the table are nice, thanks! Will think about that how i can get that to work in my basement

You can use an iPhone to check the level? Did you try that? Just out of interest? Launch the measure app and select the level. It shows two circles, which overlap and turn green if it is level... I like to know how accurate it is in honestly since I plan to use it and not go out and buy a special instrument,

A phone app is good enough to hang a picture, but what I'm doing here requires much more precision. The level I used is much more sensitive even than a regular level. If you don't have a machinist level, you can just use a straight edge, or try to just build it as well as possible and it should be good enough. I'm trying to get every last bit out of this machine, but it'll still work fine if the table is not perfectly flat. This video is also not a step by step guide, more just some ideas and inspiration.

Can't wait for mine to come! I ordered on July 14th so hoping it will ship soon as I know they're backordered. Really great to see someone else with this machine. Looking forward to more of your videos! How long did yours take to ship?

Guess it should ship out soon, mine took like 6 or 7 weeks.

Interesting timing, I'm right in the middle of building another CNC myself. I went the route of a full DIY build though. Currently using MDF for a mockup/test-run before I spend on the aluminium. Looks like we have a roughly similar scope, your motion components and spindle are a bit nicer but I think my structure will be more rigid. www.iforce2d.net/tmp/IMG_20210813_215452.jpg
Side note, I'm wondering why you wouldn't use that other room where your table saw is, for machines like routers that will get noisy and messy.

Looks like an awesome machine, definitely very beefy!
The other room is also used as a laundry room and for other things by my family, so I have to clean up everything each time and free up the table, not ideal with a big and heavy machine. With an enclosure it shouldn't be too messy though and using a spindle instead of a router should be a lot quieter.

You didn't detail what you did looking at the speeded up footage? You have a pile tiny slices? that you placed under individual feet? slices you glued? what size where said slices? Did you cut them? What where the sizes you use for the frame too?

Level is perhaps not the right word here, what we are trying to achieve is a flat surface that is parallel to and across the footprint of the CNC . It doesn't really matter if the table is 0.5 cm up on one side as long as the table top is flat across its dimensions. It does help of course if the floor is indeed true but that in most cases is not always possible which is why some clever person invented Shims......😄.
Alternatively make sure your legs have some form of adjustment and get yourself a damn good straight edge.

My goal is flat, but level is a lot easier to measure on a budget without a large straight edge. Definitely not as precise but much better than just hoping for the best. If you have a straightedge that can do the job that is even better.

An idea for leveling your table perfectly should be to poor resin on the top, or even to use floor leveling concreat

That could work, would be rather messy though and you need to make sure it doesn't shift once you add weight afterwards. One way to make it easier to adjust would also be to add adjustable feet, that's what most larger industrial equipment has to make sure it sits flat.
