Stands with Casablance as a classic worth retelling over and over. Superbly cast, and directed with that unforgattable haunting theme music, just right for the overall effect.
I've always loved the story of how composer David Raksin came to write the hauntingly beautiful theme for "Laura". The director, Otto Preminger, originally intended to use Duke Ellington's lovely standard "Sophisticated Lady" as the film's theme. Raksin quickly saw what a gem the film was developing into, and felt that such a jewel deserved an original theme. "Fine", Preminger said. "It's Friday now. When we get back together on Monday morning, if you have something you like, I'll listen to it and consider it. If not, we stick with 'Sophisticated Lady' ". Raksin went home, and created this exquisite melody over the weekend, which, for those of us who have no skill at musical composition, qualifies as a minor miracle. (It took a few more years before Johnny Mercer wrote the lyrics, which told us that Laura's "is the face in the misty light.")
I saw the impressive film with its exciting mix of styles - black psychodrama, melodrama and crime thriller. The intense ensemble playing make this Oscar-winning film ...one of the best of its genre. Thank you very much for sharing. Have a pleasent week. Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ Ingrid
Roger Ebert is correct ( as usual) "Laura" is a film about folks having drinks in expensive NY apartments ( in a way) he is also on target when he says " Webb is the seam through the film like walking on eggs through every scene not wishing to break any. I think also its Preminger, who knew where to place a camera, how to tell a story he just knew...
Classic romantic film themes : " Laura " / " A Summer Place" / Summer of '42 / " Moon River" / " Wild Is The Wind" / Lara's Theme, Dr Zhivago / " The Way We Were" . ---------------all, beautiful, & immediately, recognizable. -----------------Wolfsky9, 72 y/o
Huge, huge fan of the musical score/songs of which I own several different versions. I never get tired of it. I very much like this one, especially the faster tempo towards the end. Many thanks to the person that can say who's playing here. That would be so greatly appreciated !
Rita Hayworth had the movie,"Gilda" to feature her beauty & Gene had,"Laura." Maureen O'Hara had the best cheekbones and I find it fascinating that she's still alive today on 6/13/12 and is 93 years old. I think that Maureen looked her best in the movie where she starred with John Wayne,"The Quiet Man."
You are correct 100% She still cares about Waldo ..after death "Sunset Boulevard " what a thrill the opening was with a dead Holden narrating the proceedings Good Example on "Laura" I saw "Laura" on stage some years ago in Worcester Mass When its discovered Diane is the one that is murdered and as you recall Waldo while recouping calls everyone to have a party for the now alive "Laura" Most of the audience laughed incessantly One gent said to me " How sophisticated can you be... immediately having a party what about the poor death of Diane? Indeed ??
Terrific cast. Gene Tierney divinely beautiful and wise, Dana Andrews showing the tip of his iceberg of a romantic nature, and Clifton Webb, comic, vicious, and tragic. It's touching that his cynical/romantic Waldo makes one of the most profound speeches on love in his last broadcast ever put on film.
This is true but consider Waldo is shot while he seems to be running at them with a shotgun..immediately after that "Laura seems to be rushing towards Waldo with some affection...marvelous film 88 minutes of amazing cinema
ReMusic: Found info from another video. Am posting in case others want to know. " It's the 101 Strings Orchestra, the song is off a CD called "Love At The Movies" "
Can I recommend a film you may like " Letter from and Unknown Woman" 1946 w Joan Fontaine and Louis Jordan a Max Ophuls Special The ending is really gothic
Funny. Everyone thinks of Gene Tierney as an Irish Roman Catholic.. but in truth she was only half Irish. Her mother was a generational American of English Protestant heritage.
Lauren Bacall in " To Have & Have Not", or Gene Tierney, in " Laura" ; one can go back & forth between them, but the truth is, both were jaw-dropping beauties in these 2 films. ---------" Laura " , with 2 Gay men, desperately trying to look & be, Hetero. --------------------------------------WolfSky9, 72 y/o
No relation. Gene had 2 daughters with Oleg Cassini - Daria and Christina. Daria was developmentally disabled and spent the bulk of her life in an institution. Christina married and had several children. Both Daria and Christina have passed away.
The whole movie is like a work of art, Gene Tierney included!
One of the most beautiful women to ever grace the screen!
Yesss!

Never heard a bad version of this one -- Tony B's is up there on top. Percy's is up there as an instrumental.

Does anyone know if Gene Tierney is related to Maura Tierney? Mother and daughter perhaps?
No.
No relation. Gene had 2 daughters with Oleg Cassini - Daria and Christina. Daria was developmentally disabled and spent the bulk of her life in an institution. Christina married and had several children. Both Daria and Christina have passed away.
But I am the police.
