Frozen hot composter bin - how I got it started again | Countryside living in Finland

- A functioning hot composter bin is essential in our homestead. We have a eco-friendly, waterless toilet that separates the liquid waste from the solids and we need to compost all of that in our garden. This winter all of our bins froze and now I need to get them started again!

I live with my family on a 1,5 ha (~4 acre) homestead in Southern Finland. Our home is a 217-year old heritage log house and we are learning the skills necessary to restore and maintain it. When we moved here from the city, I fell in love not only with the house but with the overgrown, wild remnants of a garden. We are building the garden up again and making it an edible, flowering garden with lots of space for wildlife.

Heh, yes! He is a very good cook, so I rather just try to grow ingredients for his cookings and be useful in other ways. 😅

Maybe put the containers below ground level in the deep of winter so they don't ever freeze?
They are actually these thermal composters and if taken care of in correct manner and not left unattended for as long as we did, they don't freeze. Now this winter all of them are working properly and we don't need to be digging in frozen poo any more 😂😅🤭

Perhaps if you wrap the bins with insulated tarps/blankets to retain the heat so they don't freeze?
They are actually insulated bins meant for winter use, but without proper care they still will freeze. This winter we are smarter and none of the bins are frozen! 😅

Thank you! I have a Lumix GH5 and my phone (OnePlus 10 Pro) and for sound recording I use Røde wireless microphones. Still a lot to learn in terms of video editing, but I learn as I make more videos. 😅
