    Thanks for the pros and cons on both composters. Of course, I think we would all want the professionally made $$$$
    But I think your version shows ingenuity and saves $$$
    Thanks Steve 💚👍💚

    I was looking forward to these composting updates. Have considered putting something to grow on top to benefit from the heat.

      @davros1283 Рік тому

      The idea of insulating the composting material is to retain the heat within.
      Some people use a conventional compost heap to do precisely what you said and it can slightly raise the temperature of the poly tunnel or greenhouse in the winter.
      This in my view would be a better use of the space, especially with the high cost of paraffin or electricity at the moment.

    I had a similar thought to the previous comment, it is to paint the outside with a black paint to help create heat and also to protect the polystyrene a bit, and possibly put some square guttering on the lip of your hot box in the greenhouse. It’s certainly given me ideas of doing something similar on a smaller scale.

    Well done Steve, you are giving ideas to your followers how to reduce their compost bills. I find it very interesting.

    I wonder if you were to use the black polythene farmers use for round bales to wrap the homemade bin as it tough when layered and the black generates heat.

  • @rubiccube8953
    @rubiccube8953 Рік тому

    I’ve been using the celotex insulating slabs covered with black polythene on the top and about 400mm down the sides. When I add new material I move the slabs up if needed. The heat from rotting compost underneath the rises and sets off the newly added material. I check the heap with a thermal camera . You can get a adapter to your iPhone which enables you have the equivalent of a £8000 thermal camera.

    My homemade one is properly glued together. The first one I made I used ready sized polystyrene boards (I think they’re 55cm wide). I don’t really have any problems with degradation on that one - the edges seem pretty resilient. My second one I cut out of one big 2.4m board like your poly tunnel one. I used marine grade silicone and spread it all over the cut edges to keep it from spitting beads everywhere. I used the same stuff along all the inside edges to fully seal it from the elements. Might be useful for whatever your end solution might be. May not be worth the cost / effort on the edge that’s already suffered.
    Looking forward to seeing the compost reveal!

    I did 1 similar last year, but lined a 1.4m grab bag Fantastic improvement in worm's, plus it broke down finer than my outside compost. The extra protection from direct weather I think helps. 🤔

    Thanks for the update Steve looks like it may take a bit longer to produce compost in the DIY one as against the purpose built one but I think you are on for a winner there
    Maybe you could ask Tony and JB to make you a frame with out any swearing
    I think that pallet collars may the answer to your frame by just using the 1.2m lengths coupled together but you would need a lot of collars
    I'm going to empty my potato towers this week sometime, and I will put the photo's on the Potty Mouth Garden Club

    @davros1283 Рік тому

    You pointed out the degraded polystyrene, so all those loose poly balls would drive me absolutely insane!
    If I tried it I'd probably use Celotex insulation, as it is stronger and covered in aluminium foil and like you said I'd also incorporate it within a well built frame.

    Ive used exspanded ploystyrene thats very dark grey, and a special glue for polystyrene from b&q steve mate, also shred my paper and card board which help it break down faster, i followed niall gardens way of making it, works a treat👍

    Thanks for the update. It's probably been mention before but cat faeces is pretty hazardous to our health and to my knowledge shouldn't be added to composting material due to possible inclusion of the toxoplasma parasite. This is also the reason you shouldn't flush cat poo, as the water treatment process can't clear the parasites.
    From the Catit website:
    IMPORTANT: If you want to use your composted cat litter as a fertiliser for edible crops, leave cat waste to compost for at least 18 months to eliminate the risk of E. coli, tapeworm and toxoplasmosis contaminating your crops.
    I used to compost ours for use in the flower beds only but it still meant handling it so we don't bother now.
    Looking forward to seeing the unveiling of your hotbins!

    I like your diy foam bin. I was thinking of doing a similar version. I was thinking of covering the foam board with a cloth soaked in cement slurry and dried. This would be to protect the foam from the Texas sun.

    You could use a waterproof black seal paint on there, Gorilla have a good one, not sure of it's effect on polystyrene though.
    Also I add straight "stuff from the garden" and nettle tea to mine, all the microbes within definitely get the heat up and compost it faster, I add about 5 litres for every 1 to 2 feet of composting material. Works great in even cheap compost bins.

    A random thought when you were talking about tweaking your homemade design. I think Tony O'Neil did something like that and have some sort of covers on his compost bay walls - wonder if you could be "inspired" by his design and see if it could help?

    great design just needs sandwiching with 9 mm shuttering ply and edged for strenght....insulation properties should remain....but no damage to polystyrene

    Hi did you check if the polystyrene would leach chemicals into your compost then into your veg ?? I still wonder about getting 2 of the 200 l hot bins rather than one 400l ones ? Thoughts please ??

    Hi steve just bought myself a compost bin, but only place I have to place it is on my patio. Can I place it straight on the concrete or should I put something underneath first. I did think of putting some tarpaulin first, would that be OK or what would you suggest please?
