  • It's still winter in Finland - snow is knee deep and days are short, just 8 hours of daylight in Southern Finland in the beginning of February. That doesn't stop me from starting my gardening season by pruning apple trees in the middle of a snowstorm. What can you do - when the inspiration strikes, you must act.
    Have you already started your gardening season 2022?
    ▪️▪️▪️▪️
    I live with my family on a 1,5 ha (~4 acre) homestead in Southern Finland. Our home is a 217-year old heritage log house and we are learning the skills necessary to restore and maintain it. When we moved here from the city, I fell in love not only with the house but with the overgrown, wild remnants of a garden. We are building the garden up again and making it an edible, flowering garden with lots of space for wildlife.

    One of my great-grandfathers from Finland would plant a new variety of apple tree each time a new child was born. If you walk through the woods here in Upper Michigan, you often find groups of old, gnarled apple trees, so you know there was once a farm there. The trees have outlived the family. Also, pruning is nice in winter because if you fall off the ladder, you land in deep snow and don’t get hurt:) Your videos are getting popular - you deserve it!

      Awww, planting a tree for every new child is a charming habit! And yes, apple trees are real survivors, they can stand long after the people are gone, and can continue growing even after they've fallen down. I think apple tree is my spirit tree.💚

    I'm really enjoying your videos. I live in the US but my grandparents were from Finland. I visited there for the first time this past September and was able to explore and meet some distant family. Your videos help me feel still connected. What is the name/brand of your boots?

      Thank you! The boots are these thermo boots from Vaeltaja. Great for outdoor activities as feet will never ever feel cold anymore!

    Just found your channel and binged all you have to offer. I love the peace and tranquillity you convey. This video was a special bonus for me. What a treat to hear you in your native language. I'm a language geek so this was a wee cherry on the cake for me. Looking forward to living vicariously in your future videos. Kiitos Skotlannista. 🍰

      Greetings to Scotland! I will probably speak in both Finnish and my other mother tounge Swedish in the videos as I interact with family, friends and other locals. So bits and pieces of different languages will be here and there. 😁

    Be encouraged that you already have the skills to manage your orchard and garden. Observation and keeping records are very useful to help you succeed. Apples, and pears, fruit on wood that is 2-3 years old. So for good yields you need to prune accordingly so that not all of your best cropping trees have had a heavy prune in the same 2-3 year cycle. Note when each tree blossoms and which of the nearby trees, even on a neighbour's property, is flowering at the same time. Some apple trees are self fertile but others need a pollinator. If you have a tree that blossoms at a different time and produces poorly you may need to plant another tree that will also blossom at that time. Much of gardening is wondering
    "why did that crop fail?" or " what happened that I got this abundance?". Keeping gardening diaries can help solve the mystery of our wonderful natural world. I can't wait to see your Spring and Summer garden, when we will be heading into Winter.

      Indeed! Much is learned from sheer observation. And I tend to spend a lot of my free time in there, all year long, just examining the plants and the animal life. That is how you learn for sure.

    Thanks Nina! I just found your channel and like it very much. Go visit the commercial orchard and see hw they do things. You need to be using a larger and longer set of trimmers. Also ask if someone there can come to your property and identify your trees for you. Looking forward to the next video.

    • @ninasointu
      @ninasointu  Рік тому

      Yes, asking for help is the way to go! We have a big apple farm really close by and I got some good tips for pruning now! Will take next autumn the apples there to be identified.

    It’s possible not all the apples are named varieties. Apples need to be grafted to breed true. Planting seeds is a crapshoot and if you have several trees that don’t produce good eating apples they may have been planted from seed. Is there an apple cider tradition in your area? Sown apples may have been used for juicing and fermenting rather than eating.

    • @ninasointu
      @ninasointu  Рік тому

      We only have one apple tree that doesn't taste good and according to our local commercial apple farmer this could be an old cider apple tree. 🍎

    Muutin pari vuotta sitten maalle ja tontillani on seitsämän omenapuuta ja kolmssa eri paikassa luumupuita ja yksi kirsikkapuu. Kaikki eri makuisia. Ja en myöskään tiedä niiden lajikkeita. Keltaisia ja punaisia. Keltaiset omenat ovat erittäin makeita. Ovat niin kauniita kun kukkivat keväällä ja niiden alla on upeaa istua. 🍎🍏🍒

      @ninasointu  Рік тому +1

      Joo, mä oon koettanut tutkia noita lajikkeita mutta on kyllä mahdoton tehtävä kun eri lajikkeiden erot on niin häilyvän pienet että kirjoja lukemalla ei kyllä pysty päättelemään 😅

      No, the new videos will all be in English, no worries. 😍👍 My first three videos were a bit of testing grounds and I was undecided on wether do it in Finnish or English. I chose English.

      I don't care what language you speak Nina, your calm and lovely character shines through very clearly. I'm happy to follow the cadence of your voice while reading the subtitles because language fascinates me.
