    Clarence is by far my favorite weightlifter/youtuber of all time in the fitness space. Lifts huge, is honest about PED usage, and chooses to not compete for moral reasons.

    I've always theorized that activity in your youth forces your body to adapt and can, in a way, shape your athletic ability. The discussion about genetics always points to things being mostly innate, and we know that's true, but surely being extremely active in his developmental years contributed to his remarkable ability as an older teenager and into his adult life.

    • @dennisrobinson8008

      If you never discovered or pushed your limits in your youth, you can discover it later in life. You just have to have the drive, motivation and put in the work. I can testify myself. As a youth i played sports for fun, but never had the drive, passion or intensity i did in my early 30's. At that age i became to respect process more and got alot better with my confidence and mindset. Thusly i was able to push past all of what i thought were old "limits" by alot. The body reacts to stimulous and workload by adapting, as we get older muscles and nerves get "turned off", those can be reactivated by appropriate and consistent useage. But yes many kids had that drive as a kid and were able to achieve closer to their potential at younger ages.

    Not sure about Clarence’s weight class, or how much weight either of them cut to make their weight class, but they’re almost identical to Harrison Maurus’ numbers.

    Clarence has been rather open about using PEDs (over the years it's hard to say who hasn't in competitive weightlifting though, so it was sort of level playing field anyway), but watching this I just have to wonder if he started around 18 years old, because his lifts just explode around that time. Or if it's a result of starting even earlier and the results starting to show up around that time. That's a big decision to make as a teenager. I know he went to olympic competition so maybe it wasn't that much of a deep decision, but rather something that had to be done, but it still is a big thing that young. Especially knowing how careless some coaches or users are about it.
    And if he didn't start at that time, his performance was mind-boggling to me, he got so far. I know that the PEDs don't just make you super athlete if you're not genetically prone and haven't trained hard and well, but it still impresses me what his natural performance would be. Even if he was an athletic kid from the very beginning and started very early and there's evidence that the earlier you start, the higher your ceiling will likely end up at. Furthermore, he had amazing physique back then already. Now his physique is pretty much poster stuff.
    Nowadays he's doing 230x5x5 for daily casual training and says he doesn't care to increase his lifts at the moment because it would require so much dedication to force them to grow higher than PR. Today his snatch is just so fun to watch, how rigid his technique is and how unbelievably fast he is even with the really heavy weights. At least Mark Rippetoe can't blame him for not being strong enough to do weightlifting. I remember him saying though that he doesn't do that many great and difficult tricking things anymore because he's so heavy and not as quick, so he sticks to less flashy stuff and just sort of keeps it up every now and then.

      Many oly weightlifter don’t have a focus of bench press. Look up interviews from Chinese athletes talking about bench press. They don’t do it. To them it’s not necessary. But honestly you’re going to get a different opinion from everyone. I personally still do bench press because i’m not a competitor, have good mobility, and just do oly weightlifting for fun

      Ive seen weightlifters train for hypertrophy with dips push ups overhead presses push presses and maybe close grip bench but probably never just a regular str8 up powerlifting style bench, at least not the super high level ones

    • @MellonVegan
      @MellonVegan 2 роки тому

      Some weightlifters sometimes like to bench bc of the movement's overload potential to increase general upper body strength. I believe this would be most common in Russia. Or maybe I'm just thinking Klokov (he was certainly different when it comes to his training). The Chinese not only don't bench, they also very rarely overhead press. The only strength related pressing movement they'll regularly do is heavy weighted dips. The other countries should generally lie in between these extremes but I don't expect anyone to bench more than once per week. Like others said, benching can affect your mobility but you can also mitigate that or else there wouldn't be people who bench a lot with good mobility.

    • @vredneckv
      @vredneckv 2 роки тому

      It depends really. The Russians do some bench pressing during GPP phase to increase general upper body strength (I believe Okulov does bp even during comp phase or at least close to it because he likes the movement a lot), while the Chinese lifters don't do it at all. Heck, they don't even train OHP that much according to Lu!
      Anyway, while the bench press might negatively affect ones upper body mobility, I'd say for us amateurs it doesn't really make any difference. The pros don't do it (at least outside of the GPP phase) simply because there's little to no carryover to snatch and c&j.
