    You can't hear Jimmy's name without immediately thinking of Working Class Man.

    Fun fact: they actually burnt the sugar cane behind Jimmy and while they're filming this video, all the snakes and lizards were running out and Jimmy and the crew were frantically trying to dodge the terrified snakes and toads lol. This song is played at every party, gig and pub and the entire place erupts into drunken, off-key singing at 1am. It's a song that grows on you, it's not an instant "hell yes" but cumulative.

    This was released in 1985. An earlier song 'Shipping Steel'' is also working class, released in 1979 - also worth a listen.

    This is probably Jimmy's signature song (at least as far as his solo career is concerned). It wasn't a #1 single- it peaked at about #5 on the charts, but the album it came off was a #1 album, and sold more than 500 000 copies, which here in in Oz is something like 7-times platinum. The majority of Chisel & Barnsey fans tend to be probably more album buyers over singles.

      Yeah, good call. I think I had Jimmy Barnes and Bruce Springsteen albums at same time in mid 80s. Both on cassette.. ha ha.
      Never had an Mellencamp album but did like his hits I heard on radio around this time. Other rock solo artists like Lou Gramm and Bryan Adams I would have had albums of theirs around the mid 80s too. I was always pining for Jimmy Barnes and Cold Chisel to get back together though because they had already broken up before I started listening to music. I think I seen a clip on youtube of someone took at some concert with Springsteen and Jimmy Barnes sang together in Australia. Think it might have been an AC/DC cover. But I do think Tina Turner and Jimmy Barnes are most alike with their energy and style. Jimmy did break into some concert hall when he was teenager with some gang to see her in the early 70s I believe and wanted to do what she did.

    Yes, It’s what I say all the time too- Cold Chisel and early Jimmy solo sang for the proletariat 😂 the songs covered everything from returning vets (Khe Sanh), ANZACS and early Australian life (The Last frontier), truck drivers (Driving wheels), factory workers (Bow River, Shutting down our town), Aussie snakes and cane fields (Taipan). I think this is why they hold such a special place in Aussie hearts- because their songs connected with people on so many levels. Thanks for the reaction Rory.

    The reason Jimmy shows the foundary is its what he was doing before singing and I think his dad used to as well
    He's from my home town of Adelaide
    They where a pub band in our state and he'd drink with the audience also get in punch ups as well
    Jimmy came back and sung at the closure of our biggest industry here a motor vechile company that made Holden vechiles for Australia's by Australians and it was the last one in the country to close
    Jimmy very much from working class and why he loves the people he sings for even today
    From memory bow River I think is Ian moss home town I could be wrong
    Cheers mate

    When I was a teen I used to confuse Bruce Springsteen and Jimmy Barnes/Cold Chisel a fair bit. I had to detangle which one sung what. Springsteen also sang about workers and hard lives.

    I googled when this song released. You were spot on.
    * For the Working Class Man is the second studio album by former Cold Chisel frontman Jimmy Barnes, released in December 1985.

      Yes this is what I call early Jimmy solo. Later Jimmy solo shifted to much more soul and blues. However Cold Chisel only broke up until 1997 then reformed then broke up again then reformed in 2003 and again in 2009. As a band, they still officially exist today.

    This song WAS HUGE. This is the 'official video' to promote the song. Live versions are always better.
    Even if you don't know Cold Chisel/Jimmy Barnes, EVERYONE knows this song, in Australia. Jimmy's first solo album, same name. The whole album was HUGE.
    And almost EVERYONE will do the head/body 'nod', while it's playing😂
    Cold Chisel went to America and were required to change too much to 'fit', so they told them to shove it and came back to Australia, then wrote 'You Got Nothin' I Want' 😂😂😂👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️🇭🇲🇭🇲🇭🇲

    Jimmy Barnes is an Aussie legend, another Aussie legend is John Farnham, you should check him out. Anything from his concert with the Melbourne symphony orchestra is amazing. Jimmy Barnes and John Farnham also did a song together called when there is something wrong with my baby. You have to check it out. 👍

    Another anthem from Barnsey, was huge in Australia...pretty much his signature song of his solo days..goes off live!
    Was used in the Michael Keaton movie - which was called Working Class Man in Australia.. can't remember what the us called the movie... always thought Working Class Man was the better title.

    Hey Rory, if you like Jimmy Barnes, check out the band he was in before he went solo: Cold Chisel. Far, far superior to his hot and cold solo career.

    • @robrichards585
      @robrichards585 Рік тому

      @ dave scurry😳😳😳, could you please explain more referring to Barnes’s ‘hot n cold career’?. His amount of no 1 solo albums speaks for itself!!!, you must have a different interpretation to the rest of Australia regarding the meaning of hot n cold🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

    • @davescurry69
      @davescurry69 Рік тому

      @Rob Richards So you don't agree that Cold Chisel's career is superior to Barnes' solo career? Fair enough. And I wasn't aware that my opinion had to fall into line with the rest of Australia's? Good to know that I'm not entitled to my own opinion according to you. Just to be clear, I do not automatically equate sales with quality. I think JB's solo output is exactly how I described it: hot and cold. Some of it is good, and some of it is not. If you don't like my opinion, don't read my post.

    • @robrichards585
      @robrichards585 Рік тому

      @dave scurry- just to clarify a few things firstly chisel have had a few songs that people clarify as ordinary same as jimmy has also- but lord and behold it is a fact of life that every band and solo artist has songs that are hot and cold on album releases so in my opinion it is out of line to allege that jimmy’s career is inferior to that of chisels considering barnes career has spanned consistently longer than the mighty chisels.

    • @davescurry69
      @davescurry69 Рік тому

      @Rob Richards The length of a career also does not equate to quality. By that reasoning The Wiggles output would be superior to Led Zeppelin or Elvis Presley. I much prefer Cold Chisel to Barnes' solo career. Mainly due to - in my opinion - superior song quality. Plus his voice was in far better shape back then. You think differently and that's fine.

    • @robrichards585
      @robrichards585 Рік тому +1

      @dave Scully- the length of a career does equate to the quality being released by artists- if the quality ain’t there people won’t buy the records or pay to see them live= jimmy is still selling out arenas
