  • If you've never fired a Heckler & Koch pistol with an LEM trigger, it's kinda hard to explain. A lot of people think it's just a light double action, but that doesn't really do it justice. Today, we're looking at what is really unique about the LEM trigger, as well as a brief review of the HK P30SK -- the subcompact variant of what some consider to be the best pistol HK has ever made.

On using the trigger finger on the mag release -- about half the comments have mentioned this so far, so I'm pinning this comment to hopefully address it. The preferred method of using the HK paddle mag release is to press it with the trigger finger. But this doesn't work for everyone, myself included. It's just too far back and I have to shift my grip to reach it with my finger tip. It's much easier for me to shift my grip the other direction and use my thumb on the left side of the paddle. My finger just don't work like that. YMMV.

If you haven't had the opportunity to try the P07, I highly recommend it. It is a bit tricky to find an affordable holster for it (currently wearing mine in an appendix holster from comp-tac, it's not terrible but not the best), but it's one of the more accurate handguns I've fired, at least for me. Any CZ is a thumbs-up from me.

For those wondering about the paddle mag release, if you have big hands it doesn’t require you to adjust your grip if you use your thumb, however, if you use your trigger finger to hit the paddle mag release on the other side, you will probably never have to adjust your grip regardless of hand size. It’s also more efficient than a button release IMHO.

This works for a lot of people, but it's not a universal thing. I have never been able to operate any paddle mag releases with my index finger on HK or Walther pistols. Using my thumb requires far less hand contortion than using the trigger finger

    • @echo_research_and_development

The reach was not a problem for me, but it still required me to adjust my grip because it needed quite a bit of force to push that lever down with such tiny bearing surface. However, P30 may be better in that regard, because my experience, if I recall correctly was mostly with USP series.

It's like the trigger travel distance of a double action, with the pull weight of a single action. The only problem I've had with them is how far back the trigger actually breaks. The travel is already pretty significant (which is a safety feature), so having it break a little further forward wouldn't be an issue imo. I think Grey Guns has mods that change the trigger in a few ways, like shorter reset. Not sure if it changes the break point though.

    • @LuckyGunner
      @LuckyGunner  2 роки тому +25

I have a P30SK-V3 (standard DA/SA w/de-cocker) with no manual safety. It's been my primary EDC for about 2 years now. I won't sugar coat it. The DA trigger pull takes some effort to master. IMHO, the excellent ergonomics of this pistol cannot be under-stated. This thing simply feels good in my hands. I can reach the paddle mag release with the trigger finger of my firing hand, without adjusting my grip. I also like having the de-cocker on the back of the slide, right next to the hammer. I can de-cock, then move my thumb slightly to the right to cover the hammer as I re-holster. For me, the size and weight strike the perfect balance between conceal-ability and shoot-ability. As a resident of the Commiewealth of Marxachusetts, I'm restricted to 10-round magazines. So, I see little reason to switch to one of the new generation double-stack compact at this time. I may reconsider in a few years when I retire and move to free state.

Great stuff Chris. I find your videos extremely well thought out and really informative. I'm a new shooter and am just getting used to my p365xl. I've been doing a lot of draw/dry fire drills with a great kydex holster. HOWEVER, after a lot of thought and before I get too comfortable with a striker fire pistol only, I am considering going to a DA/SA or DA/SA with this LEM variant as my EDC, precisely for the safety reasons you've brought up and b/c that fits my comfort level better. I don't have large hands and I handled a non LEM HK p30 yesterday and loved it. From the ease of racking the slide, to the grip, to the hammer.......all of it. So I'm considering the HK p30SK OR staying with a striker fire pistol but getting a hellcat with manual safety or Shield EZ 9mm with external safeties. I'm torn and these days it's not easy to find all of them and compare them. I don't want to go too small with a striker fire gun and then hate practicing with it b/c of recoil and poor accuracy (ie: shield, which I hear has more snap than a regular Sig p365). The added weight of a sub compact DA/SA seems to mitigate that. Any advice would be appreciated as I continue to seek out other guns to handle and hopefully shoot before I buy

I'm very happy to see this video. The LEM trigger is the main selling point of an HK pistol to me. The pitch is _most_ of the safety of a DA/SA with decocker, but a more consistent trigger pull that is light ever shot, just longer on the first. It's the only reason I've considered carrying an HK P30SK (or possibly an P2000SK). I do believe in it's concept that the length of the first shot trigger pull is more important than the weight in preventing an accidental or negligent discharge. Is it better than a DA/SA with decocker, normally my favorite type of pistol? Maybe. I just wish there were more, and more appealing, guns to shoot it with. If you're looking for a carry gun, these are on the large and thick side, and expensive and exotic. And despite the price lacking some more modern factory features like optics cuts. Still, I'd love to try one.
If Chris keeps shooting the P30SK LEM, I'd love to see a follow-up video after he gets used to it. It's one of the most appealing carry pistols for us DA/SA enthusiasts, and the unusual LEM trigger is worth experimenting with. It's high quality, almost subcompact polymer-framed pistol of a decent size and weight most consider acceptable. Yet it's got a hammer and has DA/SA and LEM options. There aren't many guns like it on the market. Thanks for the video.

Thank you for your very helpful videos, Chris. Your analysis, content, production value, and relatability are top notch. If I had to rely on just one gun tuber, you’d be right up there as my top EDC choice! If folks carry appendix as a defensive weapon and they train with it in order to run it properly…and they’re looking for the safest option available, the H&K P30SK LEM (V1 trigger variant) should be very high on the list. Chris’ review of the Beretta PX4 compact with mods (which he carried for awhile) greatly influenced my thinking in this regard. The HK P30SK has several things going for it that make it a unique contender for the above use case: 1) It’s flat shooting and super reliable, 2) very concealable with a 10 or 13 round mag, certainly no thicker than the PX4, because the LEM HK features that very rounded and concealable profile including it’s bobbed hammer. But there are 2 additional features that truly set it apart from the PX4: 3) It is hammer-fired (meaning it’s the safest appendix option for reholstering when using the thumb-on-hammer technique) without the downside of the typical DA/SA pull weight difference…just a longer 1st pull (which makes it more ideal for defensive purposes considering the caution needed with the initial shot yet with light/consistent follow up shots. Plus, 4) the grip is MUCH more ergonomic and customizable (and because of the ergonomics you can confidently use a “pinky underneath” two-finger grab if you are preferring to use the 10 round mag for concealability. 5) It’s also unique in that it’s fully ambidextrous out of the box with the slide-catch and mag release. And with those unique paddle mag releases the gun is easier to dump and reload mags than many other subcompact or micro-compact pistols….regardless of the size of your hands or length of your thumb. And finally, 6) you get all of these benefits without having to decock your hammer-fired gun in order to keep it as safe as possible in the holster. What other gun comes even close to matching that setup for the use case of defensive AIWB carry?
Yes, to Chris’s point, there are more modern micro compact pistols with higher capacity and the P30SK LEM has what Chris calls a “weird” trigger. It’s unique for sure. But for the defensive appendix carry consideration (for the occasional or well-trained CCW holder) the P30SK still stands out from the crowd (weirdly and beautifully). As such, it not only is a design that was ahead of it’s time, but is still very much a front runner. This is why I sold my Sig P320 Compact (along with subcompact frame that I originally bought for deep concealment). Chris’ thoughts on DA/SA are largely responsible for that decision. And now I have a Sig P229 (which shares the same grip angle as the HK’s) that I carry in the winter and have available at home for home defense, and I can utilize my HK P30SK (with 10 rounds + an extra mag ready) as my EDC at any time. Anybody who insists that a 10round mag isn’t enough for them and that they need two extra rounds to make their EDC perfect…those are the same people who can’t predict if two extra rounds will be completely sufficient…meaning that they probably need to carry a second mag anyway. Which I do, when possible.
Now, if every striker fired gun had a manual striker safety control device (like the aftermarket one sold for the Glocks)…that didn’t require you to take it off safe in a self-defense scenario (like 1911’s and other thumb safety guns), then this would be a very different discussion and I might be carrying a striker pistol AIWB. Like the VP9SK. BONUS: what other manufacturer gives you two virtually identical subcompact carry options while giving us our choice of hammer vs. striker?

I could never get the hang of a DA/SA trigger especially the weight of the first pull. LEM trigger is the only way to go, same trigger pull every time like a striker and extreme reliability and reholstering safety of a hammer fired gun.

The Walther P99 (and the Canik TP9DA that's based off it) has a similar system with the Anti-Stress mode where racking the slide will cock the striker (with a visible striker indicator on the back), but leave the trigger location still in the double action length. Then you have a light but still very long trigger pull that results in you first moving the trigger back to the single action position before going onward to shoot.
It does have a decocker on the slide that you can hit, allowing it to turn back into a true double action. And since the striker on the back is both visible and moves, you can "ride the striker" when reholstering as well. It's not quite as good as a true hammer in that it is less noticeable as a small striker rather than a hammer, and you can't prevent it from firing if you hold the back of it, but you can visibly and tactilely notice the striker moving if something's catching on the trigger.
I really wish the P99's trigger system caught on more, but unfortunately even Walther themselves moved away from it in favor of the standard, Glock style trigger which I loathe.

Because the decocker button is also a striker block safety, you can press and hold the button when holstering a P99 for added safety as you similarly could by thumbing the hammer on a traditional DA/SA pistol.

To me it's like a nice single action trigger with the a safety margin built in. The overall quality/reliability of an Hk pistol is second to none and better than most in my opinion and I've owned about every brand there is! . They are simply premium grade handguns that command a higher price! I like the idea of a hammer fired pistol personally. I really like the paddle style magazine release as well! I purchased one of these P30SK pistols since I'm a big revolver guy and not a fan of striker for carry, especially appendix carry. I rig it so my first shot is DAO and the trigger pull weight doesn't bother me in the least, since I shoot a revolver properly. I have a 15rd magazine with a 17rd spring/follower for the full size P30 but it only holds 16rd in the SK, but that should be enough. I carry it all day with no weight issues. I only discovered the trigger type a couple of years ago but I know in my heart that if I had discovered it earlier, I would not have purchased/sold/traded so many other pistols. I was never a fan of DA/SA because of the two different trigger pulls that were required because the first shot is heavy. Since the LEM reverses this, it's fantastic.

I wanted something a little smaller for daily carry and being a guy with XXL glove size, I don’t like micro pistols. So, for me, the P30SK with the 13 round magazine will work great. It’s smaller than my P30LS and being a V1 LEM, I shouldn’t have to spend another $270 to have the trigger worked on to be any good. Hopefully, my problem is solved and I’ll have a good carry gun for the warmer months throughout the year.

I’ve really been intrigued by HK lately, specifically their hammer fired handguns. Had my eye on a P2000 or P30, the P2000 I feel like is the ideal ccw size gun with a slightly shorter grip length, although I think both would carry just fine albeit with a longer grip on the P30. Just need to find one locally I can test out first some people seem to either move or hate the trigger. Just shot a stock CZ P07 and gotta say the omega trigger in there wasn’t too bad for me, even in DA. Then again I’m not really a trigger snob, I just really liked how fast I could get back on target. For a do-all completely reliable gun that will take you to hell and back HK is looking pretty good right now.

The time-tested USP-Compact 9mm is still in production too (I picked one up a few months ago). I wouldn't really consider it a CCW pistol, in a world where the Sig P365 exists, but if you're considering a P2000, it's basically the same size. And if you're only considering a hammer-fired semi-auto, you won't find many guns smaller than these, and none that I know of in the "pocket pistol" category of the P365 (striker-fired) range.

I understand about the problem with long travels; two of my carry guns are Kahrs, and that long travel - also considered a safety measure - is distracting to the point where you wonder if you're experiencing a failure. To be fair, the long travel is only an issue if I'm maximizing range points; if I'm practicing defensive fire from a draw I find that being in that adrenalinized zone makes the long trigger less of an issue. Still, a trigger kit is in the works for me.

Bullet weight doesn't matter as much as bullet design. That said, most of the decent 147-grain HP loads are less velocity-dependent than the lighter bullets, so they perform better out of shorter barrels. But with the best modern HPs, it really doesn't matter a ton. Shoot some Gold Dots, HSTs, and Hornady Critical Duty out of your small 9. Carry whatever is most reliable at hits to the point of aim of your gun's sights. Or whatever you can afford to stock up on.

TLG LEM is best LEM. Medium trigger return spring makes the initial take up a bit more tactile, and the reset bouncier and more forceful. Light FPBS takes a little of the stacking out of the wall, cleans it up, and lightens it a touch. Then throw a Grayguns short reset kit in it and you have a very pleasant and capable trigger system that is just as easy to run as a striker gun, with the ability to pin the hammer while holstering.

Great vid. I’m an hk guy. My impressions in no order. Yes, the p30sk is chunky. That improves shoot ability in my opinion. My complaint about it , if you can call it that, is that it’s not much smaller than the standard size p30. One or the other would be my recommendation. I have both.
As to the lem trigger, I have the 45 compact with lem. My complaint about it is the very short reset. Unless you practice a lot or are very experienced (like you) it is very easy to inadvertently fire the second round sort of unintentionally. I have to intentionally let up on the trigger after the first round. Maybe inexperience on my part, but, as you said, takes some getting used to. Sort of unnecessary for the average shooter.
Hk makes such a highly engineered product that they will never be worried about every new fad in guns. The vp9 was their step in that direction.
My favorite is their standard size 45. Great ergos and easy to shoot. Their reduced recoil system really shows on that pistol.

@@DIYDad1 I would not recommend the lem to anyone who has not tried it. I got it because curiosity finally got the best of me. The lem versions these days are also a premium price. I’ve never scene a p2000 so can’t really comment. The p30 is comparable in size to a Glock 19. The interchangeable back straps which only hk had at the time of my purchase made a big difference to me. I recently handled the p07 c in the gun store and liked it a lot. The new version with optics ready is an excellent gun and Cz quality is comparable to hk. I’ve owned the Cz 75 sp01 phantom for several years and like it a lot. They don’t make the phantom anymore. The trigger on the p 07 c that I tried was a lot better than the hk. Many people get their hk trigger modified to reduce travel and reset. All in all I would go with the p07 compact unless “you just gotta have an hk.” Can’t go wrong either way. Good luck.
