I just found a perfect little corner of UA-cam. Your work is exactly what I feel the photo community online needs because there is so much work that is "detached" from any real story or meaning. Especially film photography, there's a lot of old cars and plain architecture shots because they are easy and pretty to look at. But the direction I want to move in is taking photos that actually mean something and tell a cohesive story. That is what photography is for and I think that is exactly what you are doing! Thank you for inspiring me through your videos to get out there and not be afraid to approach subjects to make important work.

What a great video! I bought a GSW190iii about 2 years ago and haven’t really shot that many rolls through it. You have inspired me to go out and shoot with this massive camera. I am one of those guys that has a collection of great cameras and just need to pick one and use it. Thanks

You are right about sticking with cameras which you feel good with. I have had a lot of impulse buys in the last two years but i keep coming back to my yashica tlr for 120 and the contax ii for 35mm. Thx

I'm a relative newcomer to your channel but have already binged many of your videos. Please keep making this kind of content. It's so grounding to see someone being honest and unpretentious while doing aesthetically and technically excellent work. Great pictures, great videos.

I appreciate you saying technically excellent. It feels like most of the time that I am doing everything wrong. Maybe I should stop comparing myself to Sternfeld, Epstein and artists like Justine Kurland and Alec Soth.

Very inspiring, I have the GWS 680 I bought quite a long time ago but not used much and I've recently moved away from lugging high end gear about, just using a phone , which is great for finding what images you actually like taking. You can then use that knowledge to move on to some serious image making. I've been looking at moving up to larger format (not sure what) but you've convinced me I have what I need.

Robbie I love my Fuji GW680 III, I have both a 65mm and 90mm versions. This is just me saying this - I prefer the 6x8 format to the 6x7 which I find a tad small, and I like the 6x8 over the 6x9 which is a bit long for me. Nice video, FYI a little side note - the designation of sweet pepper does not refer to the sugar content of the pepper, but it places it in the camp of not being a Hot pepper. Thus the two classifications of Hot and Sweet.

ahh that makes more sense.. btw I am thinking of picking up a GW690 and doing the same thing you are. Designating the GW for Portraits and the GSW for everything else

    Thanks for your video.
I use my Fuji GSW690iii primarily for landscapes, scenics, group portraits, and environmental portraits.
I use my Fuji GSW690iii when I need higher image quality than I can obtain from my 35mm small format camera with 28mm lens.
I use my Fuji GSW690iii when I need more mobility than I have my 4x5 inch large format view camera with 90mm lens.
When I also need to shoot general subjects, I pair my Fuji GSW690iii with a Fuji GW670iii with fixed 90mm normal lens or an Ansco 6x9cm folding camera with fixed 105mm normal lens.

I had the gsw690ii at a great price and loved it. Can’t explain why I sold it but missed it dearly. A few months ago I replaced it with the gsw690iii so im back in the game. But wait… a hassy swc crossed my path at a fantastic price so now I have both. It just arrived yesterday and stoked to get out and shoot. Love your videos. So well produced and impressive images. Keep it going 👍🏻

Great video as always! Deam, I struggle so much with finding 'my' camera.. I know for sure that medium format is the goal. I have Bronica GS-1 but it is so huge that I never use it.. I do enjoy my Fujica GS645pro(foldable one) but am missing something wider..
Than I think about Mamiya 645 etc... way too many cameras to choose from and to little around just to test:/

Very nice format of video and really agree about the GW's being well suited to documentary landscape photography. Doesn't have the movements of a LF camera, but has a big format. Very very important point on 13:35 that a lot of people nowadays just get stuck into the gear and miss the rest. Also, what I have observed being part of a photo club is that few people are putting these onto paper and sometimes there is the "oh it's shot on film so amazing" yet it's not good photography. For B&W I see darkroom printing as a whole circle that is not available for hybrid.
What I like of the GW as a camera, that it contains the smaller formats and X-pan within. I have the 90mm version and as much I would be better served by a Mamiya 7, it's a lot of other photo and non photo costs that can use the budget. Print large 😏 and the cost of film is not the highest.
And photography, of course, a lot go into philosophical discussions but I have gotten some of the best images with the sidekick... phone or digital P&S.

    • @RobbieMaynardCreates
      @RobbieMaynardCreates  Рік тому

Thanks for sharing! I agree with your sentiment that just because its shot on film, doesn't make it good, or better. I think its important to keep your vision true and use what you have. For me, Film helped me find what I was missing with digital

Cool video! I hear you on finding a certain camera for certain purposes. To me my documentary camera is my Mamiya 645 Pro TL. It fits my needs perfectly for my purposes. The rest is mostly 35mm.

Your video is well done thank you. It speaks to me. I'm also using the GW 690iii similarly. Shooting close focus portraits of the homeless in San Diego. It's controversial, polarizing and to me draws me in with shadenfreuda. My wife says I should help them. My photography b&w lab instructor says stop looking at them as if they are caged animals in a zoo. Ok ok I say. I'm also a respiratory Therapist in a downtown hospital. Intubating these folks. My take is different. Anyway I enjoy the GW690iii shooting portraits of the homeless. Blurry background is my goal and the Fuji satisfies. Close focus 500/sec f8. Perhaps a little fill flash and guaranteed a blurred background. F5.6 more so. I use Ilford HP5+400. Develop at home with HC110. Color at the moment is above my pay grade. Thx!

I love the closing statements about gear and photos. As corny as it sounds, im a firm believer in
Q-"whats the best camera?" A-"the one in your hand"
Q-"whats the best film stock?" A- "the film in your camera"
Sure, i have multiple cameras and there are certain compositions id have a prefered film stock for, BUT i'm going to take the photo eother way.
