OMfG, I grew up watching this, lived just outside of Philly (yep, ch 12, WHYY). Pulled some memories outta the closet. I used to LOVE this program. Most of it I don't remember, but the theme song is embedded ! ! ! Wish I could buy it on DVD.
That’s a friendly giant.....but that’s a fucking HHUUUUUGE GIRAFFE! lol, my dad grew up watching the friendly giant and me and my siblings watched it as children in the 80s! Absolutely amazing :)
Such an incredible show, and on right after Mr. Dressup, too! Until you realize that based on the proportions in this video, Rusty is at least five stories tall roaming around the countryside like a harbinger of death when he isn't in the bag. And Jerome? Jerome is a Lovecraftian horror of such size as to drive people mad just to see him move. Great kids show, though, as long as you don't think about it.
"Yes, Dressup, a weird WORLD OF OZ cartoon, adventures of Pinnochio, I think all from Canada, floating the waves over to WARREN MI." Don't forget Rocket Robin Hood! That's always brought up as the finest achievement in Canadian TV animation!
+Christopher Sobieniak I remember all those, too. I also lived in Warren, Michigan when I was 4 years old in 1966 and CKLW-TV (now CBET and owned and operated by CBC), Channel 9 in Windsor/Detroit would air those every weekday morning (from 10 to 11 A.M., if I remember correctly). I also remember when Channel 9 ran "Rocket Robin Hood" and "Fireball XL-5" later in the day. By the way - "Tales of the Wizard of Oz" and "The New Adventures of Pinocchio" are now being shown on RetroTV on Saturday mornings as short subjects in between shows. When I find out what times Retro is airing them, I'll be sure to post that info. Seeing both those short subject series again recently bought back many untapped and pleasant childhood memories!
I caught them all as an American kid floating the waves over to Buffalo, NY. Also have fond memories of Hilarious House of Frightenstein super early on Saturday mornings.
I loved the Hilarious House of Frightenstein. Used to watch it on CHCH TV channel 11 Hamilton during the early 70's. My favorite part of the show was the wolfman putting on a 45 record and dancing to it lol
Geez that's quite a creative, talented voice actor they had on there.. a regular man's voice for Jerome and a high pitched 'mickey mouse' voice for Rusty, how very original'.. we gotta give that man a pulitzer
Wow...they used to show this on Ch-12, WHYY, in the Philly area back in the sixties. You could get beat up for admitting that you watched it. Saw it again in the mid 90's on Starz. My kids loved it.
The scale of things always did strike me as a tad off. On the other hand (she wore a glove) it does fit a child's sense of perspective: the child visitors may have felt smaller than normal in respect to the Giant and his friends, but the emphasis was on letting them feel welcome.
I always loved it when Jerome played the harmonica. I didn't like it when he used to dance around outside. It was almost as if he was left out of the rest of the music. I especially loved it at the end of these harmonica episodes when Friendly says "goodbye" and Jerome says "Goodbye, Friendly" while he plays the harmonica.
@Jaime8585 I imagine that as each of these giant animals kept showing up the townspeople would just shrug their tiny shoulders and point them towards the castle
I always wondered why the Friendly Giant referred to his recorders as "pipes". A pipe is a type of instrument, I am sure, but those are recorders that he has hanging from his wall. I should know, I used to have to play one in school.
Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't there an episode of Mr. Dressup where Casey and Finnegan dreamed they were on Friendly Giant? It would have been a Mr. Dressup -- Friendly Giant crossover.
@@TheNicsmom I saw it once. They dreamed that they were on The Friendly Giant, in Jerome's window. Friendly told them a story, just like he did with Rusty and Jerome. Is that on UA-cam or some other video site?
Did anyone else used to cry at the end of every episode? That recorder STILL gives me goose bumps!
I didn't as a child. But I do now.
So glad to play the episodes here. I'm 64 years old now anf I enjoy watching them today..
One of my favorite shows growing up. Too bad kids tv is not like this anymore !!! "look up. Wayyyyy up "
I'm over 50 years old, and I still need that escape.
Omg the flute, the flute and harp, I'm 2 again!
Hearing the Friendly Giant play the flute intro... takes me right back to my childhood.
OH Canada! You had the best children's show ever.
i loved being able to catch this show at my grannies house in canada!
Wow what fond memories. Thank you for sharing.
awesome.....brings back sooooo many memories

"The Friendly Giant" was aired briefly in the United States on NET
(National Educational Television) during the late 1960s.

Look up...Look waaay up!....Miss you

When this show was being canceled and the protests that followed one guy had a sign that said Don't let Rusty get dusty. Too funny
I watched that before mr dressup and Sesame Street 1970s

+acejackson42 Not to mention Jerome is purple for some reason.
+TheCanadiangirl4 Why not? After all Paul Bunyan's Ox was Blue.
It was on before MR Dressup way back .
Jerome was always stoned.
That was the most fun ive had all day !!!!!!
Yes, Dressup, a weird WORLD OF OZ cartoon, adventures of Pinnochio, I think all from

I never realized Rusty was a lefty guitarist, like McCartney, Hendrix and Ollie Halsall .

Did you know that Mr. Rogers Neighborhood was actually filmed in Canada before Fred Rogers moved to America.

My town gets Retro anyway so I may catch those.

i can play popeye on my accordian this is an awesome show
Watched this in my few years before 'kindegarten'., in black and white.. 1959---61 or so.. The show 'chez helene' came on right after, i think..
I didnt realise it was around in the 80's.....my 2 girls loved cheyrl lois and bram, elephant show..
He musta scared the hell outta those people in that harbour town. It woulda been like a real life Japanese movie.

He keeps a chicken in a bag nailed to the wall?!?
+Dansky Kral It's bigger on the inside;)
GESSO217 Best answer ever!
That's some good chicken pickin'!
Even old Rusty was rockin' it
I bet Rusty didn't mind, gave him all the more time to practice.
The scale of things always did strike me as a tad off. On the other hand (she wore a glove) it does fit a child's sense of perspective: the child visitors may have felt smaller than normal in respect to the Giant and his friends, but the emphasis was on letting them feel welcome.
@Becky: I was watching this in the early 90s.
Sounds like a very nice guy that giant

Are There More Friendly Giant Shows Like In 1958 And Even 1960's Or 1970's Or 1980's And Just The Whole episodes ?
Whole

lol I always kinda felt sorry for Rusty, being stuck in that bag all the time!
Considering the size of the town and the chairs to Friendly and the castle... that's one big chicken.
Seems like a nice giant
I love his boots

May I use this clip for a video I am doing on Bob Homme?
"It's only a model."

Wait A Minute. Is This Episode For Real, Or Did Made That Up?
That is what I want to know. Was there ever such an episode?
Not As Much As A Crossover Of My New For Real Green Giant Sprout Commercial.
thank god!@imaginedreality
does anyone remember a friendly giant spoof where he cooked rusty and decapitated gerome? What show was that on?
+Rembrandt's People That was on Codco, it's uploaded on UA-cam last time I checked.
look up waay up
I sound like rusty…!
look up waaay up
I hated this it reminds me of bad times.
